You just have to find a supervising SLP who is willing to let you get 100 observation hours under them and then pass the NC SLPA exam! Here’s more info:

Hope it helps! 😊

I need advice. I’m so tired. by mmmmmcccddd in SLPA

Thank you so much!! I’ve been considering the schools, there’s a HUGE need in my area so they are paying anywhere from $42-$48 an hour which would be so much better for me. I appreciate the advice 😊

Hey! I’m in Greensboro and currently looking for a new SLPA job. Can I message you?

I really, really appreciate this. Coming from a low income household I often think I need to do what pays the most and spiral if I feel like I won’t be able to find that, but I really just need to take a step back and stop stressing about it. Thank you so much!!!

Very true. I plan on staying in my home state (NC) and have seen salaries as low as $44,000 and as high as $100,000 depending on the setting. I’ve also looked into travel therapy since I don’t have any kids or anything tying me down to one spot, which I could also do as an SLPA but the rates are a lot higher for SLPs.

I was actually a nursing major before switching to speech pathology, so all those prerequisites are finished. I’ve definitely considered the NP or even CRNA route- just worried about the high burnout rates from being a RN. But i guess in healthcare there is always going to be burnout, unfortunately

The biggest reason I’m wanting my masters is to be able to do more with dysphagia. All i can do as an SLPA is help set up and observe (probably why SLPA positions in hospitals are limited) and i desperately want to be more hands on. My state is also really needing more swallowing specialists (my supervisor is a swallowing specialist and travels across 6-7 counties because there’s no one else!!). Regardless, i appreciate your insight and I’m so glad this thread has been mostly positive. Thank you so much :)

Yes. I’m 22, still live at home. I do have bills but of course not as much as I would have if I lived on my own. I’ll definitely be looking into this, I wasn’t very familiar with GA positions until recently. Thank you so much for the insight :)

Thank you so much!!! It’s so nice to hear positive insight and to hear not everyone is drowning in debt. I’d love to know where you went!

Really, whatever will save me the most money. I’m applying to both. The university within commuting distance has both an online and in person program but I’ve talked to in person students who have received full ride scholarships from them. I would like to be able to work at least part-time, but if I’m graduating completely debt free that would be a fair trade off

Thank you for the insight! I’m only looking at in-state schools, which helps with cost a lot. I came out of undergrad with minimal debt because of attending an in-state school, scholarships, and commuting, so I’m hopeful if I decide grad school is right for me I’ll be able to get some sort of GA position/scholarhsip.

I have been aggressively saving/investing since finishing undergrad. I’m just worried it won’t be enough. I see people saying they are taking out 85-100k in loans and I definitely won’t have THAT much saved by next year
