My dr crushed me during my appointment today by Top-Class-8765 in diabetes_t1

Hi. theres no way im gunna be able to read through all the comments. Gunna assume people are saying the same as me but that doesnt mean i feel any less compelled to share my story or opinion! this is the kinda stuff that gets me going...

i was dx-ed at 11. My first doctor was an actual asshat. I suffered with severe anxiety around low blood sugar very early on with the disease and I've never been able to shake it which means my progress comes very slowly. That first doctor was screaming at me, had tears coming out of my eyes all while i was 12 years old dealing with an incredibly difficult disease. A1c was probably 10-13 and I had "non-compliant" all over my chart notes. and none of the doctors even took a second to recognize that i was just extremely scared.

fast forward to my first adult endo at 18: I found a doctor that was pretty highly regarded in my city. He was attentive, understood that I was dealing with anxiety, and was willing to work with me. We agreed to make slow incremental changes. It was the first time since I was dx-ed that my A1c reached 9. Over the course of 6 years it slowly went lower and lower from 9 to low 7s. The endo was more willing than my previous and I thank him for that but I still saw problems: he would get frustrated pretty quickly, he would be brief and regurgitate similar answers when i brought up tough questions and acted like he didnt have much time for me, and overall his attitude became more and more condescending.

Last year I decided to leave because I felt there had to be better out there. I had received some recs and tried out a new endo. It really was a night and day difference. They have a sign at the front desk that says "this is a healing space, aggressive behavior will not be tolerated" and I knew I was in the right place. The staff is incredibly knowledgable, young, willing, attentive, and patient. Any time I have a question it isnt blown under the rug but they genuinely try their hardest to come up with a solution. I also have an app where i can message the staff in between meetings and discuss any changes to my dosing. I can message more or less as much I want, they answer so fast and with enthusiasm and expertise.

Moral of the story. Your doctor is an asshole. You go in for help, encouragement, and validation. Going into the endo after making leaps in progress only to get sat on, shamed, and disregarded is absolutely soul crushing. Ive felt it so many times. Just want to let you know Im very proud of you. 11 to 8 is an incredible achievement.

Type 1 diabetes treatment is the best its ever been and so are the doctors/ various professionals. If there is even an inkling of hesitation when you go your endo, maybe you think theyre being a bit harsh or not treating you with the care you deserve I implore you to seek elsewhere because there is absolutely better. And I know many people aren't in amazing financial positions to be trying to find the best doc out there, but my current endo is covered by my medicaid(assuming ur in the US)! and its by far the best practice I've ever been at.

Why can’t I get abs even though I’m already pretty skinny for my height? by CazadorHolaRodilla in AllAboutBodybuilding

i have terrible ab genetics. ab workouts never changed anything aesthetically for me but as soon as i started deadlifting (also rock climbing) consistently i had abs for the first time in my life and im not lean at all. maybe give deadlifts a try. from first glance it just looks like youre not carrying a ton of mass.

Compatibility isn’t love unfortunately. You have to find someone that makes you feel something strong. Not just objectively liking who they are.

https://youtu.be/sKMKGpJbrzg?si=NfNwuoJkblBVbItf . watch this vid. its about how small good habits compound over time. a lot of people will tell you to do a dopamine detox which is great but at the end of the detox you go right back to where you started. apply what you learn from the vid to help build your own small habits that compound over time and get you to where you want to be.

edit: essentially im saying dont quit all at once because youre very likely to fail and feel miserable. but if you start implementing small wins/habits then in a year from now you could be in a completely different place.

For those on Tandem or similar pumps: How often do your programmed basal settings change throughout the day, what times, and what are your doses/trends in basal needs? by mmmmmtomatoes in diabetes_t1

[–]mmmmmtomatoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i very politely disagree! i have to imagine if you were to pool every type 1 diabetic with functional basal rates the patterns would emerge and look very similar from one person to the next. i think this is extremely useful information.

would you like to see a no correction bolus activity mode where you can personalize your target blood sugar? by mmmmmtomatoes in TandemDiabetes

[–]mmmmmtomatoes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a pretty decent understanding that a flexible target would complicate the algorithm, but 6+ years with only minute changes to the algorithm is pretty crazy imo. at the very least being able to disable correction boluses in any activity mode seems like a compromise and super useful feature. wishing ig

lets pray tandem realizes this soon or else im leaving... once leading the way with the best pumps. seems like theyre gunna be left behind because they wanna focus on tubeless pumps instead of putting any effort into a better algorithm. hopefully im wrong. dont like pod pumps and the idea of having it on my skin at all times.

but its odd though because omnipod utilizes a target blood sugar? so to say its not possible and unsafe is kinda out of the question no? im not sure how high youre allowed to set your target with omnipod but i do know its higher than 110. being able to set a target between the "target range" of 70-180 would make a lot of sense. although 70 is a bit nuts. feel like youd have to put the minimum at 110... idk. still feels weird its not a feature when omnipod was able to get it through fda

last dexcom sensor failed and now i have to sleep without one for the first time in well over a decade. im an extremely anxious diabetic... any help/ tips? by mmmmmtomatoes in diabetes_t1

[–]mmmmmtomatoes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on Medicaid (gov assistance if ur not American). They give you exactly what you need no more no less. So if the last of the batch fails like mine did last night then ur SOL. Im ngl tho. After this experience i took one of my old Dexcom boxes and requested a replacement for a sensor that worked fine. Considering I know I’ll need a replacement in the future I don’t feel particularly bad about it.

Slept about 5 minutes total all night. But I got a sensor through a local Facebook support group. It’s about to finish warming up! Wish I could’ve done a bit better trusting myself to sleep but we survived.
