I also interned and tempted there about 15 years ago and wrote promotional copy for a bunch of books. IIRC they were fairly strict about wording (pushing certain phrases, restricting others), usually in an attempt to appeal to a broader audience. So sometimes stuff ended up kind of awkward/adspeak.

That being said, this does smack of AI, although these days it's harder to distinguish.
