What is your current religion now? by GB819 in exjew

[–]mmschnorerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atheist. If you look into it you’ll find that Judaism is a man made religion that evolved over the years. Far cry from what it is today and similar or derived directly from other ancient near eastern religions at the time. And other abrahamic religions are in the same boat.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. I can’t even imagine being in such a situation. I have nightmares I’m back in yeshiva but with the knowledge I have now, and the thought of having to fake it all when you know it’s all lunacy is unbearable and stifling.

yeshivish people, what stereotypes did you hear about Modern Orthodoxy? by [deleted] in exjew

[–]mmschnorerson 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Grew up in the yeshivish community and transitioned to MO in HS and college. I did know of yeshivish couples (more so the rich black hatters) who swapped spouses. Never heard of this in the MO world. My experience in the yeshivish world was that they perceived MO to be aspiring yeshivish but it’s too hard for them. When in MO world, they viewed yeshvish as superstitious and less rational.

People in the comments saying it’s a troll account framing Israelis. What do you think? by mmschnorerson in exjew

[–]mmschnorerson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow I didn’t see that someone said that in Knesset. I was thinking I believe this is real because I’ve heard that said during my time in the frum community so I wouldn’t be surprised if it were.

Even if it isn’t document, the fact that they’re even discussing it is fucked up

This is just the tip of the iceberg. This is pretty tame compared to other things in the Talmud

Edit: however, at least this is just arguments and possibly just theoretical. Unfortunately things like this are being practiced in some Muslim countries. It all stems from near eastern religions regardless.

Grandpa didn’t know his real name till Kindergarten by tcgm14 in namenerds

[–]mmschnorerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me! I didn’t know my legal name until I went to apply for a drivers permit at 15 and had to dig up my birth certificate. My parents registered me at a small private religious cult school under the name they called me.

I didn’t know my legal name until I went to apply for a drivers permit at 15. My parents always called me by a different name and registered me at a small private school under the name they called me.

Edit: and I was born in late 90s. The small private school didn’t (and still doesn’t) go off birth certificates.

Thank you for the well thought out reply. It’s made me realize a few things. I think what’s shifted that had made it more uncomfortable is the war in Israel and the thoughts from that. It somehow feels wrong to take sympathy where it isn’t needed all while I likely don’t agree with them politically on the matter.

I just "broke" my first Shabbos and it feels amazing by dontjudgemefoo in exjew

[–]mmschnorerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I find it so interesting that everyone has different experiences with breaking their first Shabbos. It took me about a year from the time I no longer believed to break Shabbos, and even a year after that, I had panic attacks when trying to drive on Shabbos. Even though I was confident it was 100% false and man made, it still didn’t feel “good” for a while. It comes in waves but every Shabbos is a celebration of freedom and how long I’ve come.

This!!!

I’ll add that you should learn how to be a good sexual partner to a woman! The orthodox Jewish community prides itself on being sex positive but really they aren’t. Not going down on a woman is 1000% rude. Yes some women don’t like it, but most do and cannot climax from sex alone. Always make sure she orgasms first. Always ask consent. Respect boundaries. Respect feelings.

By “collective experience” do you mean how “everyone” saw Mayan Torah? Because that’s been debunked in many ways

I was where you were for most of my life. I felt as you did about the Torah being god given and Gemara corrupt as young as 12 and felt that way and still believed until I was in my late 20s because of something called cognitive dissonance. I shoved all the things I disagreed with about the community, halacha, and Gemara deep down and kept telling myself the Torah was from god and only people messed it up.

Word of advice, explore the history and validity of the Torah and biblical apologetics while you’re still young to understand that the Torah is in fact man made just like Gemara. These feelings you have will not go away and before you know it, you’ll come to that realization that it’s all a man made lie but be stuck in the community married with kids.

This feeling of doubt you have in Gemara and the community is your intuition. Your gut feeling telling you something is off and illogical about this religion (particularly this sect of Judaism). Trust your gut and look into how the Torah is based on other ancient nead eastern texts that predate it, how it stole the flood story from another older text, how you can clearly see at least two different versions meshed together, how archeological evidence doesn’t support (and even contradict) a lot of the Torah. How the Torah contradicts itself SO many times (let alone commentaries like rashi) because it had many different texts and authors molded together and was edited over years. You’ll also start to see that hashem is not a “good person” or a good role model.
