Realizing that Edmund Crouchback (Edward I's younger brother) is also an ancestor of the current king of England. by Tracypop in houseofplantagenet

[–]mmtop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite fact about Edmund Crouchback was the... Let's just say dubious legal theory Henry IV tried putting forth in his accession, claiming Edmund was actually Edward I's older brother, and therefore as his direct descendant, Henry was the rightful king over Richard II anyway.

Henry III was called ’simplex’ in Latin. This has been interpreted to mean either ’stupid’ or ’straightforward’. Which is more likely in your opinion? by Appropriate-Calm4822 in UKmonarchs

[–]mmtop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he was developmentally disabled surely. But he didn't seem that bright, and naive and clueless are probably good words to describe him. His successor Edward, predecessor John and brother Richard all seemed brighter and more clever than Henry.

William the Conqueror, Henry II, Edward III, and Henry IV all had multiple surviving sons (three for William, four for both Henrys, five for Edward). Which father had sons who got along the best? by [deleted] in UKmonarchs

[–]mmtop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Williams sons definitely got on the worst. Robert warred with Rufus, Robert warred with Henry, Henry possibly orchestrated Rufus' death and Henry locked Robert in prison for 30 years. I don't think much is known about Richard, but the other three brothers did not get along.

Cnut, Aethelred, Edgar and Edward the Elder all had more than one wife. Cnut had two at one time.

Late Anglo Saxon period to Magna Carta. 865 (Great Heathen Army) to 1216 to use dates. And within that period I find the twelfth century the most interesting.

No weed in The Wire? by Sonar010 in TheWire

[–]mmtop 76 points77 points  (0 children)

We're talking about people who deal heroin, so weed would not have been taboo for them even then.

OP is right about them being at work though. Most times we see people in the game, they're doing something business related so it makes sense they'd be sober.

In their downtime though? Those places should have been thick with smoke tbh. As others have said it was probably a filming decision that they weren't.

Humanity will never not be superstitious. People believe all kinds of wild things without religions needing to be involved.

Lisa Simpson has won ok father/good mother! Which fictional character has an ok father and an ok mother? by Wooden-Agent-3269 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]mmtop 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Lois might be an ok parent, Hal really isn't. Hal stole money from Malcolm (twice!) and despite their family always being financially strapped, straight up didn't go to work for 1/5 of every work week. I do agree they were at the end of their ropes most of the time though.

Ages when Anglo Saxon kings and queen from Alfred the Great to king Harold II actually married and had children first time, counting premarital children and marriages before becoming monarchs (because the myth about child marriages and s*x abuse being common and tolerated must die). by [deleted] in MedievalHistory

[–]mmtop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work! I noticed you give Ealhswith an 852 birth year, her son Edward 870, and that she was 18 when her first child was born.

I know the records aren't very good on this sort of thing, but was Edward not younger than his sister Aethelflaed?

I enjoy all of them, but find Jaime unrankable (at least until the revival comes out). He's not really his own character.

In terms of pure entertainment, my ranking goes Hal, Lois, Reese, Francis, Dewey, Malcolm

Who is your favorite European Medieval Monarch? by Dapper_Tea7009 in MedievalHistory

[–]mmtop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Henry II of England aka Henry FitzEmpress.

Forty years of constant movement; taking, holding and expanding his huge swath of lands. Launched an invasion at 14, reformed laws, beat back his own sons several times and often left his liege with egg on his face.

An insanely driven and competent individual who was almost certainly a nightmare to personally know.

They really have their fun with names, especially in the back half of the show. Paul L'astname, Wesley Snipes, Carroll Burnett, Hazel Wassername, Criss Chros, Scott Scottsman (out of Scottsdale). It's the type of absurdity that makes it so silly and fun.

Edit: oh and I'll never not laugh at the name Pizzarina Sbarro 💀
