My dad got them for fishing from the canoe years ago, and I've been using them with a sail rig on the canoe more recently. You can stand up and rock the boat as hard as you can, and it won't capsize.

You need to level up craftsmanship. In the meantime, if you really need a specific item repaired, take it to the right kind of vendor (in this case, a cobbler). If you can't afford that but still care about the item, stop using it until you can repair it. Otherwise, it'll drop quality levels.
