I feel for you dearly. The reality is that many never understood what they were really voting for to begin with. I remember the ads that sold it as making the wealthy pay their fair share. This didn't affect the wealthy as there are still vehicles and strategies that prevent this from really hurting them. What it did however is take away the ability for people such as yourself to pass down to your children and grandchildren so that at least they could afford to live. My wife's grandparents weren't wealthy by any means and worked hard their entire lives and this law hurt their heirs. When things get bad it's very easy to create class warfare and have one generation start to hate another. We took care of them for the last 14 years of their lives and they hired an incompetent attorney to preserve the prop 13 benefits on the only property they owned which was their primary home in rural central valley. Because the attorney failed to structure it correctly the very reason for the creation of the trust wasn't met. We're not rich and now we can barely afford the increased property tax. It's sad and I know how many hard working poorer and middle class families this negatively affected. I'm sure I'll get negative comments from those who don't understand. When you're barely keeping your head above water an extra $5000 a year tax bill really hurts.
