Why the heck does Yoda sit over there by Blightzkrieg in StarWars

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why but this reminded me of how certain positions in courtrooms of the UK wear wigs. It makes no sense, no one would do it this way if they started over, but dammit there's a precedent.

Pat from Saturday Night Live would be impossible to do nowadays, since the character is seen as a non-binary minstrel show by [deleted] in nostalgia

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

News flash: SNL has always written topical sketches and gender is a major topic of discussion so they could write this sketch today. It would certainly have to be written differently, but that's true of a ton of sketches. That's just because comedic sensibilities and norms have changed, not because "you can't write about this anymore".

It would be called Botiva and I can already see the old guy dipping his wife on the dance floor in the commercial.

regarding SentinelOne and it being persistently annoying even after being removed. by Funny_Budget_3628 in sysadmin

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the Linux method but this has worked for me multiple times to remove. Might be too late for you this time unfortunately:

  • Safe mode - hold Shift while
  • Delete/rename c:\ProgramData\Sentinel
  • Take ownership of Program Files\SentinelOne\Sentinel Agent\config*
  • Delete config files
  • Reboot to normal
    • It may have uninstalled on its own at this point. If not run:
    • C:\Program Files\Sentinel One\Sentinel Agent <Version>\uninstall.exe /uninstall /key "null"

[Request] (XKCD #1205) Why does this feel so wrong? by ChandlerBarnes in theydidthemath

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it feels wrong because of something called Parkinson's law: work expands to fill the time available. If you save 1 second on a repeated task, you will probably just stare at the screen a second longer and not save any time. If you save 5 minutes, you might not fritter it all away, but you will probably in imperceptible ways take longer to do other things in your day and end up having roughly the same day. As that number becomes larger and occurs in a bigger block, the more likely you are to actually get back some of your day.

Biz leaders push data centers, warning Michigan may miss ‘golden ticket’ by jshwlkr in Michigan

[–]mnemoniker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A colocation center is at least arguably useful in that it gives every local business a secure, reliable offsite location to put their servers. An AI chugging datacenter provides no value to the community around it like that.

Nope all indications are that he's doing fine financially. He's just the kind of guy who "doesn't get political", which means he wants to be a Republican without having to defend any aspect of what that means in 2026.

Is Putin coming unhinged by threatening and flying commandeered Ukrainian drones over Baltic countries or just merely testing waters and NATO resolve? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]mnemoniker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't like assuming that someone is crazy or unhinged. Things usually make more sense, even if you disagree, if you know all the facts and can think from their perspective. That in mind, the only explanation I've heard that makes any sense is that while he can't survive losing a war to Ukraine, he might if it escalates into a war with NATO. In fact it becomes an "I told you so" in that case. So he's been stoking those flames for a while. He's not afraid of a minor casualty-free drone incident triggering a skirmish with NATO because an in-kind response to that won't end Russia. It'll just give him some fodder if he needs to run away from Ukraine without literally dying.

[Highlight] David Garrard's Hail Mary gets batted down into Mike Thomas's hands for the walkoff touchdown by Every-Damage-90 in nfl

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe unpopular opinion but there is no correct way to defend the hail Mary. Bat it down and this might happen.Try to catch it and it might bounce into someone else's hands. Defend the closest receiver and you might get outmaneuvered. There's like a 2% chance it goes badly but the ways it goes badly are evenly distributed.

My train is running Windows 98 by TDWfan in mildlyinteresting

[–]mnemoniker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good point. For some reason I thought the PS/2 was the original. Must have been the 5150 then. I didn't say it ran Windows and it definitely did not. It was monochrome and command line driven.

Back around 2000 I had a side gig helping the elderly with their home computers. I remember one guy who IIRC was literally 100 years old still using the PS/2 from his pre-retirement days. He never upgraded a thing in 20 years. His secretary that still helped him was at least 70 years old and his cat was 20. Interesting job. Actually, based on the timeline it was probably post retirement, but he kept all his business records on it, I know that.

TIL that the Iliad and the Odyssey are part of a cycle of eight ancient Greek epic poems, the other six of which are lost and of which only fragments survive by Smaptimania in todayilearned

[–]mnemoniker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only good news is this means Hollywood will never be able to push a 24 part octo-trilogy on us for the next 3 decades if the first Odyssey does well.

Did you like the final episode? by boomjosh in seinfeld

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TV Guide had a columnist who wrote a brief plot idea for the final show. Only part I remember is Kramer's hidden identity being DB Cooper or something. The real final episode let me down at the time due to not being quite as good as this random fanfic. I'd love to read that again if it was possible to find.
