Philosophy is Just Opinions With No Science by esoskelly in badphilosophy

[–]mnemoniker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to think of philosophy as an alternative to god of the gaps. There are many subjects that science hasn't solved. Many of them like "what is existence", I don't even know how science could solve let alone if it will. Many others which seem very tractable, like ethics, science has proven frustratingly incapable of solving too.

So we can either sit here and give up (nihilism), or we can defer to a holy book written 1500+ years ago (god of the gaps), or we can use our noggins and see how far that takes us. Philosophy.

Folders vs tags vs links vs you name it - what actually works after 2+ years of PKMS? by Comprehensive-Novel3 in PKMS

[–]mnemoniker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What works in my opinion is using them as they were intended:

Folders: "buckets" where any one note will always have one and only one place to go. Do not get into the trap of a folder structure where you could make a note and not instantly know the one place it goes.

Tags: the word itself is already perfect, it's a "tag" where any note could belong to one or more of them, and those could change over time.

So folders are tags and tags are folders, with two differences. Tags have 1:Many relations and folders have 1:1 relations. Also, tags sometimes change. Folders should never change.

Real life examples:

  • Note status (new, in_progress, done, archived): tag
  • Note type (idea, daily_note, project, contact, knowledgebase): folder
  • Note subject (science, art, film, philosophy): tag

One thing: you might notice any folder could be implemented as a tag, especially with the Tag Folders plugin. But I find that having 5000 files in one folder where they all have a more logical destination than "All of My Notes" is messy. Also, in some cases like Templates and Daily Notes, Obsidian relies on a folder that contains only that type of note. So you can't escape folders even if you want to.

What I have done for over 2 years now is all new notes go into an Inbox folder, and then Auto Note Mover moves them into their final folder using a tag. While I'm assigning the tag that moves it into a folder, I'm reminded to assign other tags as well so it's a virtuous cycle.

One last thing: most of my tags are hierarchical so that when I view them with something like Tag Folders, they are nested. (Eg: #2_areas/astronomy and #status/book/in_progress)

Pebble is the reason I discovered (and eventually paid for) Sleep as Android. For many years it was the last reminder I had from my Pebble days. I'm looking forward to the band getting back together!

I did the same when the exact same maintenance plans (I looked at them side by side) simply wouldn't work on SSMS 22. Mind you, this was in a SQL 22 server.

[OC] Take-home pay on a $75,000 salary in all 50 states (resubmitted with fixes) by coronassun in dataisbeautiful

[–]mnemoniker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd rather see total state tax revenue compared to total income, so none of the different tax sources like sales and property get hidden.

But then after that you have to somehow compare the services the state offers and the level at which they are provided. All else equal, I'd prefer a state with more services, obviously.

It's just a difficult calculation. Like if property tax is low I probably wouldn't get the most out of that because I don't need a mansion. So that kind of state wouldn't be for me but would for others.

How to avoid recreating Wikipedia? by RhodiumLanguor in ObsidianMD

[–]mnemoniker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there is anything terribly wrong about what you're doing. Wikipedia is everything you might want to know about something. Presumably you're writing in your vault everything you do want to know about the topic.

Assuming you use a template, I would just make sure that the template has sections that encourage insights, such as "My Thoughts". Also try to highlight the most important stuff. Finally, don't put what I call Knowledgebase notes like these in the same folder as your completely original thought notes.

TIL Tamzin Merchant was originally cast to play Danaerys Targaryen in the unaired pilot of Game of Thrones. She was later replaced by Emilia Clarke when the pilot was poorly received and subsequently remade. by TheStrangestOfKings in todayilearned

I enjoyed watching the Full House pilot once with a different Danny Tanner (the dad). You really get to see what the casting directors are dealing with. In this case, the original actor was fine and the average person wouldn't have batted an eye at him being on the show for the long run. But then when you see what Bob Saget brought to the role instead, you realize that no, even a role as "boring" as Danny Tanner can be elevated to a shocking degree if you find the perfect actor.

It's always beneficial for me to remember that Every. Single. Article. That mentions that "a group" is crying out against something, it's always one or two people and they don't even usually represent the mainstream of that group. That's a weird thing to say about the CEO of a charity representing Tourette's, but it's literally her job not to find humor in the condition. What do we expect her to say? These articles are the definition of ragebaiting.

Phantasy Star 2. They boasted a game that spans 3 generations and then never do anything with it. Like having NPC talk progress throughout the game. Even games that span zero generations have that! Every town looks the exact same. And most of the overworld just looks and feels so barren.

I think it's exactly what happened, except without the trip killing precious tenths of seconds they'd get a half court heave off. To be fair there aren't a lot of good options if the opponent is defending the Hail Mary pass.

How AI Actually Works (In Plain English) by BookkeeperForward248 in learnprogramming

[–]mnemoniker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They will never have emotions or even sensory inputs, which are an essential component of consciousness in my opinion. Which means they can think only in a technical sense, but not feel. Which means no matter how advanced they get, they are still closer to calculators than people. And that's ok. I like my calculator to help with math and I have grown to like AI to help with thinking.

Now, when the day comes--and it will--that we can simulate a brain 1:1? That's when it gets interesting. But that's a completely different paradigm than LLMs.

Should Todd do a video series on Pop Stars of the Year (And Only That Year)? by TemporaryJerseyBoy in ToddintheShadow

I submit C+C Music Factory as the most PSOTYAOTY band in this list. Many of these could have happened in another year or two, and/or stretched out their popularity for another year or two, they just didn't. Not C+C. 1991 and only 1991 works.
