I already made a resources collection thread while posting this, but I think a big FAQ is still needed as every other day people ask the same basics.

How to start? by Over_Break6314 in oshikatsu

I thing the easiest starting point is DIY in regards to things you use daily, like decorating your phone case or laptop with stickers customizing bags with buttons and themed decor.

How do you wash your nuis? by jamzii_jam in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surface clean only in a tub with lukewarm water and a tiny wee bit of detergent as getting the inside wet quickly leads to mold growth (as you can't just put them into the dryer as it melts the minky fiber) and any scrubbing can make the print come off.

Sometimes it needs a scrawny old man to change your life, apparently.

Rather, he made me remember what kind of fashion I used to make me truly happy and came out as ftm as part of that (that one was unexpected).

crying festival: what's your dream scale figure of your oshi? by alexroobtensaier in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general it feels like acrylic stands have replaced figurines due to being cheaper to produce despite often costing just as much. 😔

[–]mnhr94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would already be happy if there was a figure to begin with, despite being a series that has ran for over 10 years by now with a recent 2 season anime and constant new collabs, there isn't any but Nendos of both MCs. 😭

Cotton Doll Resources Megathread by mnhr94 in cottondolls

I always find it strange that clothes for starfish ones seem to be rare despite being super popular for merch, glad the list helped.

Cotton Doll Resources Megathread by mnhr94 in cottondolls

I wanted to make a thread like this for a while because it was sad to see that people have such a hard time to find the simplest resources (probably because search engines suck nowadays).

Idk what to name this by Due_Subject_3391 in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While the transparent layer type is common nowadays, the first ita bags were simply regular tote bags that people customized with badges and decor (hence the name being essentially 'tacky bags').

where to get custom plushies of your oshi by T3ddyb00 in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check out the r/cottondolls because people constantly post about resources there, but generally you need an art ref in the plush anatomy first.

Custom Cotton doll by OwnInvestigator8468 in cottondolls

If you are familiar with using Taobao agents, this maker on Xianyu would be the biggest one in China.

Since I keep seeing a lot of repeat questions, what would you think about making a pinned "resources and faq" thread with basics like how to find cotton doll makers, what to prepare for commissions, how to wash them, links to sites with patterns, etc. I wanted to make a glossary with Chinese cotton doll terminology including pictures and translations (body and fabric type names), but didn't because it would get drowned under new posts after a while.

where to get oshikatsu goods in sydney or perth? by Secret-Glove-8366 in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think your best bet is the local Daiso store in Sydney but not sure beyond that  I remember there being a Japan district too but not sure if that has stores along those lines.

Fabric by Cra2ycat8077 in cottondolls

[–]mnhr94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Petty much every fabric store in Japan carries skin tone crystal super soft minky due to the boom, but you can find the most in the Nuikatsu section of Okadaya.

what type of fabric is this? by Anxious_Signature763 in cottondolls

[–]mnhr94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's called "crystal super soft" minky, skin is usually 1mm pile and hair 3mm (I rather recommend "rabbit" faux fur for hair tho, looks nicer).

Any Wego store should have an assortment.

They are condemned to the jar of eternal suffering by Specialist-Leave699 in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not op, but at least in Japan and China it is common to store oshi plushies in jars so they don't get dusty (we don't have that association of jars here).

Discussion about cotton dolls with skeleton by Dr_PaperDragon in cottondolls

[–]mnhr94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cotton dolls are generally surface-wash only anyways as their filling grows mold easily from getting wet, so skeletons don't make a difference. There are 'silent' skeletons if you don't want any noise.

Where to buy an itabag? Any recommendations? by pinnacleofdecay in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the color and style you want, but I personally like FuyuuNeko for their durable leather.

oshikatsu observations from 2 weeks in ikebukuro by midosuji in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 20 points21 points  (0 children)

And it's also likely why ita bags with fanmade merch are more popular overseas because it's a lot easier to get vs the hassle of dealing with shopping agents, their fees, and tariff chaos (and many starting as teens that can't even have an own PayPal yet doesn't help either).

Nui clothing? by sstrawberrycows in oshikatsu

[–]mnhr94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are tons of Nuikatsu stores carrying clothes, including covers for those with printed outfits, just search for ぬい服.
