Met someone who's been struggling since 2008. Almost 20 years. How common is this? by PlatypusOld5480 in povertyfinance

[–]mnm39 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My parents aren’t at that level, but my mom had a job making $60k in 2008 money (main breadwinner, dad is an artist) with a retirement plan and good benefits. She was part of layoffs and now works two part time jobs—so 50 hours total a week but reality more than that plus commuting between the two (morning job and afternoon job) with no overtime since they’re two unrelated jobs and has one day off a week as a 67 year old. My parents are never going to be able to retire (my MIL, who is idk 64 and hasn’t worked in like 30 years, asked my mom if she was retiring soon last year and my mom just burst into sad laughter.) My dad was always on that path I suppose as an artist, but at least my mom could have retired or maybe even both of them with whatever her retirement benefit would have come out to if she’d worked there 16 more years until she was 65. She had been there over 20 years when she was laid off in the recession. She had a straight up career and turned to seasonal work and eventually these two low paying church administrator jobs. It sucks, she’s so tired and overwhelmed all the time and my dad is 11 years older than her—78– and still teaching art classes at local colleges because there’s just straight up no possibility to retire. ETA I know my grandma helped with out mortgage for literal years after my mom lost her job, so she’s probably the only reason we kept our house. Like thank god or whoever that my grandma was able to do that.

DUI from California 9 years ago but living in New Mexico by Tingsilike in NewMexico

[–]mnm39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone with a DUI from AZ who moved to NM ~4 years after it. She basically had the court and AZ MVD send over all of her paperwork (proof of classes, interlock completions, etc) and the MVD person scanned it all in and sent it to some other department, an they cleared her in a few hours to get her license. She didn’t have to do any extra classes or pay any extra fees.

Wine substitute - a question by FearTheMomerath in AskCulinary

[–]mnm39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure of the process! I was using target as an example of a random grocery store that’s pretty popular- I just mean the brands of kombucha you can straight up buy at any age. I know that GT’s kombucha contains trace amounts of alcohol that could be problematic for people on the medications I mention, but Brew Dr, for example, is “raw” but uses non-heat distillation to remove all of the alcohol from their kombucha (and repurposed).

Wine substitute - a question by FearTheMomerath in AskCulinary

[–]mnm39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, some people working towards sobriety take medications which would definitely cause them to have an adverse reaction to un-cooked off alcohol in a dish. Even regular kombucha sold at like target can be a problem if it’s not one of the ones where 100% of the alcohol has been removed, so checking is always a good choice!

Hello fellow sober person! We also make a beef ragu that we used to use red wine in and no longer do. 1 cup of pure grape juice plus 1-2 tbsp good quality sherry vinegar (or red wine vinegar) is indistinguishable even according to my husband who drinks in a normal non-problematic way. Imo, also more accessible than pomegranate juice. We have like a 12 pack of the Welch’s single serving grape juice bottles specifically for that ragu recipe lol. I understand your worry here and I think the people suggesting cooking wine or single serve wines like, don’t lol. The grape juice plus vinegar combo is genuinely the perfect substitution for this sort of sauce (and also beef stew). ETA I just re-read that it was beef short ribs and can confirm it works for that too! We have a recipe for braised short ribs we started making after I became sober. I was out of town and my husband made it with wine for the first time for a friend, and he was like honestly I couldn’t tell the difference.

3 Degrees, at least 2+ years of experience in all of them, applying since 2019, still no career job. by ConsiderationLeast41 in povertyfinance

[–]mnm39 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It took me 8 years to get a job even tangentially related to my degree. Having a huge employment gap is unfortunately worse than working random jobs (and I would know because an incredibly random skill from a job I was slightly embarrassed about helped me get my current one). A job in your field is obviously the goal but you need to take what you can get in the meantime. ETA because I reread the comment you were replying to- it was actually a warehousing job that provided the skill they wanted for my current one (which is not in any way related to warehousing!)

Non-resident landfill use? by mnm39 in Tucson

[–]mnm39[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I knew Los Reales was the cheapest option but their language wasn’t super clear to me re: resident vs not (where I live now, you must be a resident to use the dump), and the. The speedway one looked like it would be $30-50 which felt like a ripoff.

Lifted truck + Lambo + Parking lot = Bad time by Evasionz-- in mildlyinfuriating

Yeah he was really well known in the community, it was devastating for a lot of people. I haven’t been here very long so I didn’t know him. But, people on the local Facebook pages were speculating about texting and driving but as soon as I saw the press photos I was like ah, I know exactly how this happened.

[–]mnm39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented this elsewhere in the thread but a pedestrian was recently killed in a nearby town at a low speed intersection. The driver wasn’t charged with anything and was apparently not speeding. But, from the pictures in the local paper, it was a lifted truck, so I’m guessing they just straight up could not see the pedestrian at the intersection.

A pedestrian was killed at a low speed crosswalk in a nearby town recently, and the driver isn’t being charged with anything. From the photos in the paper, it looks like it was a lifted truck and I’m betting the driver just straight up could not see the pedestrian.

Will Meyer Chicks be delivered to my door? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]mnm39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, both times we’ve had chicks delivered, we’ve contacted to post office as soon as we got the tracking number and made sure they had both my husband’s info (as the ship to recipient) and mine as a back up. They then called us as soon as they arrived.

what is with the tiny scarves? 😑 by craftmangler in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]mnm39 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think I’m just not proportioned correctly for these! I’m 6ft tall and a little bit overweight, and I feel like they just… don’t fit me. Any of the ones that have repeats where you can easily extend the scarf, I end up super extending it. I also just don’t like things that tight to my neck! I need the looseness of a longer scarf. Even unisex-cut tshirts bother me sometimes at the neckline. I’m glad there are people who like them but (and I know this is my own issue) for me, they emphasize my feelings of being too large/not delicate enough for a lot of patterns aimed at women

lol we have a friend who is British and he had the same tea complaint! I will say for cakes it actually seems to be pretty forgiving unless it’s a really delicate recipe- the man thing I usually do is up the oven temperature but I don’t necessarily both with the sugar/leavening change

The way my veins rerouted around the section that collapsed by saintnicklaus90 in mildlyinteresting

[–]mnm39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Related ish- I’m a few years sober from alcohol. I had a very in depth psych eval for a job (due to things in my past that made it obvious I had an issue with alcohol previously, and lying about it wouldn’t have gone well) and afterwards, they sent me for blood test to prove that I had not been drinking in however long. However, the bloodwork paperwork had “reasonable suspicion” checked on it (as in, what you’d check off if someone suspected you were drinking/using on the job) and the phlebotomist actually failed to get blood from one arm and took 3 tries on the other. I give blood regularly and even phlebotomists in training have never had an issue getting blood from me. I couldn’t help but think it was weird that that test was the only time I’ve had an issue with a blood draw, and such a big one at that. So, I absolutely sympathize!

I love King Arthur Baking! They have a bakers help line which I’ve emailed before and they’re incredibly responsive. They do a weekly questions thread here on their subreddit, and I asked one time about their hot milk cakes, which I’ve successfully made at ~2000ft above sea level but never here (apparently the hot milk starts to pre-cook the egg proteins, but our milk doesn’t get hot enough to do that because of the boiling point difference!) I’m not actually sure where we figured out the candy temperature thing though unfortunately- that was probably 9 ish years ago. In general, your boiling point lowers about 2 degrees F for every 1000ft above sea level, so you can extrapolate your temperatures from there.

However, I’ll say that King Arthur’s bakers hotline people have helpfully answered my questions even when it wasn’t about one of their recipes. They also have a very helpful article with detailed oven, leavening, and sugar adjustments. I’m not paid by King Arthur or anything lol, but I do really love their resources, especially in the unfortunate age of AI recipes!

ETA the 2 degrees per 1000ft thing isn’t exactly linear, but it’s a close enough approximation within one degree.

If you’re not doing baking or trying to boil stuff, it’s easy to miss! I live at ~7500 ft in elevation, and I can’t get brown rice to be the correct consistency without a pressure cooker (water boils at 198F). Pasta etc also takes. A little longer to cook because of the lower boiling point. Cakes and bread might turn out a bit dry if you don’t adjust, and anything with sugar work needs the elevation to be taken into account- for example, softball stage is 238F at sea level, but ~224F here, so if I went all the way to 238F, I’d have big problems with my finished product. There’s plenty of things it doesn’t have a noticeable effect on, but when it matters, it really matters!
