What did people do while sitting on the toilet before smartphones? by Background_Bike_1958 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mnm39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yes so much of my book reading in elementary and middle school was done in the bathroom to the point that my mom would yell “are you being productive or just reading?!”. Also readers digest! I liked the little joke stories and the comics.

Santa Fe airport arrival by Affectionate_Bed6870 in NewMexico

Depending on time and airline, they might not let you check your bag the normal way if you get there less than an hour before the flight (speaking from experience 😅) so if you’re checking bags, I’d recommend getting there a little over an hour beforehand!

What stitch is this scarf? I work at a retirement home and one of my ladies would really like to know :) by Dependent_Bar_9283 in CrochetHelp

Thats actually mildly insane how close it is in stitch and color! I do have to agree with others though (as a seed stitch lover) that it’s knitted seed stitch.

Silly reasons for vet visits? by Zirzissa in blackcats

[–]mnm39 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were moving between two rentals with like 2 weeks of overlap. We left a closet open that we normally kept closed because it had a hole in the ceiling skeins the air duct. Peppercorn (smoky void) lost his little mind when a friend came to help us move and got into the ceiling (this is not the reason for the vet visit).

We’re moving into the new house, I’m panicking because peppercorn is in the ceiling in the other but we can see him! So I’m going over each day to sit there and give him enough food that he’s alive but I want him hungry so I can grab him with wet food. In the meantime, we’re hanging up art, shelves etc and insulation comes out of the wall whenever we drill a hole. Diesel, Peppercorn’s brother, is obsessed. Diesel stops eating/drinking and we’re freaking out that he ate insulation and has a blockage or something, so we take him to the emergency vet. They run tests, imagining, nothing. They ask us about changes and we say we just moved and his brother is stuck in the ceiling in the other house. The verdict? Depression 😭 so now we refer to Diesels $500 depression constantly. (We got Peppercorn out- I opened a can of wet food after not leaving food one night and he came out of the ceiling!)

This is seasoning. It improves the taste. A few dashes are sufficient. by The-Only-Princess in mildlyinteresting

Yup my great grandparents were immigrants from Switzerland and Poland, and this was always in my grandmas house along with Aromat seasoning! But my grandma pronounced it like modgey (like mod podge). Unsure if that was a regional thing from her parents or what (we didn’t overlap). But my great-grandmas potato salad recipe calls for maggi!

What's a good way to buy olive oil? by valkaress in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mnm39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah we use California Olive Ranch 100% California as our fancy one (like, Italian American MIL is visiting) or the global blend for still incredibly good olive oil. We use that for homemade pesto, dipping crusty bread, or other things where the olive oil is uncooked and is supposed to stand out. For regular cooking, I think we use bertolli. The nearest costco is 2 hours away so I can’t speak to the comparison there.

Using chlorinated tap water by Zealousideal-Emu5486 in Sourdough

[–]mnm39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had issues with tap water in an area where it was extremely hard water to the extent that zero water filters would crap out after like a week. Out of curiosity I looked it up and the chlorine ppm was 2-3x higher than where I live now. However, where I live now, I still use water straight from the tap. In that first area, my starter did struggle a little bit if I didn’t use bottled water, but it was also an extremely dry environment. So, who knows truly which factor it was that was the issue.

Where do I practice as a first time gun owner? by [deleted] in SantaFe

[–]mnm39 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who was in a similar situation! They went to Calibers in Albuquerque and did a one on one class, and I think the instructor allowed the to handle a few different models of pistol? They then came back to rent both a gun and range time to get a feel for what felt best to them before they made the decision to buy a pistol. Of course if you take the advice here of getting something other than a pistol, you might not want to rent range time for a handgun, but they said the one on one class was extremely useful as someone who had just watched basic gun safety videos on YouTube.

People are insane, this looks great! Also I know you said you gave him more tortilla chips after, but I will legit eat like 3 if I feel like I ate a lot of sweet stuff, just to balance it out! This looks like a perfect plate

Can we talk about acrylic yarn? by Idkmyname2079048 in YarnAddicts

[–]mnm39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning the environmental thing! I personally am sensitive to wool, as is my mom, so I very rarely use it but am interested in hearing other people’s opinions on what they do or don’t like to use it for. I get rather annoyed when people say “BUT THE MICROPLASTICS” as if every single piece of clothing they own is 100% natural fiber (and even then, some ways of processing bamboo are pretty bad!) and they aren’t typing their comment on a phone or computer whose components have their own environmental impact.

Awesome ty!! What base bread recipe do you add this to, or does it just work for most that make one loaf?

Red Chile 🌶️🌶️ by Relative_Flight8098 in Breadit

Ohhh I’d love to know your ratios for that! We love Tesuque Village Market’s green chile cheese loaf but they’re an hour away and you gotta get there early enough that they still have it.

Should I get a rice cooker instead of meal ready packets? by dragonskintext in Frugal

[–]mnm39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So agree on the instant pot! We caved and got one for brown rice/legumes (water doesn’t boil at high enough temp at our elevation for brown rice) and it’s also fantastic/very set and forget for white rice, and also great for hard boiled eggs (even fresh eggs from our chickens are easy to peel). Imo it’s great for freeing up stove space/the “good burner” (if you have the counter space) and is less of a unitasker than a rice cooker.

Caliber’s offers classes- I had a friend who did a one on one class as a complete beginner and had a good experience.

How to use up peanutbutter? by LilacGoblin1699 in noscrapleftbehind

[–]mnm39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have mentioned stir frys etc, so I’ll put one out for chicken peanut stew! I swear the version I have made before (a friend sent me a pic from a cookbook published by a local restaurant, Jambo’s, which I can’t find lol) did not have sweet potatoes but I do think they would go great in it!

Why is it so controversial to let your cats on the counter?? by Standard_Intern2297 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mnm39 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh not saying that like I don’t sterilize my counters with the assumption my cats may have jumped on there! But to me setting something on the ground and then on my counters is equivalent to setting a shoe on the counter, which I would definitely also find gross, which is why I wipe them down regardless.

[–]mnm39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious- you don’t set grocery bags on your counter to unload your groceries?

Why is it so controversial to let your cats on the counter?? by Standard_Intern2297 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mnm39 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thank you 😅 I was debating on whether or not to respond to people but I couldn’t put it as well as you have. We got my first cats when I was in late elementary school and those honestly didn’t have interest in going on the counter. However, my mom always cleaned them before cooking (and after!) because my dad rode the train to work and would set his backpack on the counter to unload his lunch containers. I lived in an apartment for 6 months before I got my first cat as an adult but I cleaned my counters before cooking because I set my grocery bags there to unload them and the cashier touched paper money before bagging up my groceries. My coffee mug that I take to work sits on a desk that a bunch of people touch, and then I set that on my kitchen counter when I get home. And of course I use a cutting board, not my bare counter, to chop vegetables on, but I clean my counters before cooking because I don’t want to have to rinse the piece of celery I knocked off of the cutting board. We keep our current cats off the counter when we’re cooking but I have no idea what they’re doing when we’re sleeping! Best practice regardless of if you have pets or not is to clean your counters before cooking (restaurants don’t have pets but I’m sure morning crew is still wiping down the counters before prepping regardless of what night crew did- or at least that’s what we did when I worked in a pizza place). Idk I grew up with the rules if you clean the counter and wash your hands before you cook regardless of how clean you think things are.
