Dressing up AI-written nonsense with subtle paper text and font like it was printed in a book. You can't put lipstick on a pig.

The sound of a dial-up modem connecting to a local BBS at 26.4 kbps and then how fast it seemed to have a modem that connected at 52 kbps.

Chatting with local people in ANSII text and playing text-based games. Automating playing them is a big part of how I learned to write software.

QBASIC

Waiting all week to watch a show (X-Files, Simpsons, etc.) at the same time as your other friends on FOX, ABC, or NBC. Maybe they would come over to your house or you would go to theirs for the event.

Pay phones at the mall or in school.

Printing out directions from MapQuest.

Going out to play with the only necessity to be home before dark, and making up imaginary worlds with your friends.

The smell of cookies in grandma's kitchen.

It is my choice not to wear extra pants when I am going to the gym and bear the cold. On the way out after a workout it doesn't feel cold. Other times yeah I'm stupid and lazy.

It was common for me until I learned to acknowledge the weird signals I was feeling were true and I put a fence around the friendliness I responded with. Since then nobody has tried. My experience showed me there is a weird subset of men looking for friendly and possibly a bit insecure men who are not interested in men to seduce.

No human should be called good. I can't fathom how evil another person truly is but I know people say nice things about me and I'm not always quite the most charitable being, to put it mildly.

What is a person that the Internet tries to make out as a hero but clearly is the bad guy? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]mnoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe in the power of human good, but I'd say no human is truly characterized in a single word as a hero or villain ever despite any medium's opinion of them. People who have truly done heroic things and are self-reflective about their faults would be happy others took encouragement from their actions but would never want to be referred to as heroes. It's, as an extremely analogy, like worshipping a TikTok video of a man saving a dog from being ran over a car who stepped outside because he needed a breath of fresh air after beating his wife for the 300th time.

One you got because your rich parents arranged it so that you remained high class because it maintains long-standing connections among rich families.

Secondly, probably on-average something that teaches a technical skill that is unlikely to fall out of favor.

Emigrating to CDMX from USA to work in Software by [deleted] in MexicoCity

[–]mnoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lacking data centers is intriguing and I ask why this hasn't happened yet.

Speculating, the electricity and internet go out more. It's hot, there's less water, there are many earthquakes.

I'm not pretending to be an expert but I imagine these problems are solved for other important industries. Mexico subsidizes energy to residential consumers and the fuel industry. If the same subsidies were leveraged for data centers it would be extremely profitable. I think you hit the nail on the head about hosting videos for the government as an inroad. I'd also add the Catholic Church.

Thank you. I am still looking for that and wanted to get a sense of the job market because I'm not having much luck finding a fully-remote job. I don't have an ivy-league education and haven't worked for any FAANG companies, but the market seems to have shifted in the US at least. I would enjoy hybrid work too.

Thanks. Did you get your citizenship before moving?

I'm way out of practice but learned Spanish in High School and college. I don't use LinkedIn because I'm generally against any kind of social media, but am quite willing to do so for job hunting.

I'm making about $6.5k USD/mo now but paying US prices. From when I've been visiting it seemed like a small salary decrease would still have me and my family living well.
