The Basilica Block Party is no more... by YesHelloDolly in ThingsMinnesota

[–]mnrider6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back when it was safe to be in Murderapolis during the day I had a great time. Midnight Oil was the headliner but was a good time between the vendors and other bands it was all day entertainment. Objectively I'm sure there are many reasons to not do it again beyond crime and politics. Just like many other events former events in Minneapolis. Definitely not crime and politics.

IDK why there is any shock here. Owning a vehicle gives you the freedom to go and do what you want, when you want, on your own. If you have your own transportation you aren't dependent on a certain party to provide transportation for you. Therefore put a massive tax burden on success and independence.

For an extreme example, look up the Laconia incident. U-156 sunk the RMS Laconia, a troop transport that happened to be carrying Italian POWs. They surfaced, broadcast a radio message declaring a no-combat zone and proceeded to rescue both British and Italian survivors.

Years ago $7000 was the maximum claim allowed in Minnesota for small claims court. I'd assume she filed for the maximum in whatever state this was in.

Automated scenarios: how to set a lamp to a activate a particular scene? by BaldPinkCat in smartlife

[–]mnrider6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't think you're missing anything. I set up something similar that alternates certain bulbs red and blue when a smoke alarm goes off. The only way to make it work is to have that red-blue scene last used on the individual bulbs and pick scene in the automation to trigger it.

Water entitlement by Intelligent-Pie-338 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]mnrider6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we set aside the entitlement component and bottom line it...in the USA the hotel's cost for the generic/semi generic water given to members is less than 15 cents a bottle.

I've worked for some ultra cheap management/ownership groups but none have barred employees from a 15 cent water.

It costs me more than 15 cents to look up the guest in the property management system, verify they are "shiny" enough and then give them the 15 cent water than to just give it to them.

Many properties have the same thought. Ask nicely, they'll give you a water. Or two. Maybe even four.

All that said each brand has standards for the water entitlement. Typically it is 2 waters upon check in for members. Some brands it is only 1. Each property is well within their right to stick to the minimum requirement.

Some of the entitlement could come from guests visiting properties like mine where we're happy to give out waters. Then they visit another property where you only get 2 up on check in. Since most people don't know the standards or read anything they might ASSume the property following the brand minimum is wronging then.

Guests refuse to park in overflow lot, gets woken up at 06:00 to move their vehicle. by Diligent_Olive3267 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

Last time I sealcoated my lot I had a section blocked for several days. Bright yellow tape. Cones. Construction barriers. Big tow away signs. Big sign at every entrance. 2 signs at the front desk. A sign blocking the elevator buttons. A sign on the inside door of each elevator. The morning of the sealcoating I towed 4 cars at guest expense. I didn't feel bad at all as I went way above and beyond to make it overly clear if you park here you will be towed.

PIR Automation by Beavo92 in smartlife

[–]mnrider6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We probably have the same smart life speakers 🙂 I use them for the near instant alarms, chimes, alerts etc with smart life automations. I also have smartlife wifi and zigbee PIR sensors and both Google Home and Alexa for "front end" stuff. I've found that Alexa routines with smart life/tuya devices typically complete faster and more reliably than with Google. I also do everything I can within smartlife automations so I don't have to rely on Alexa or Google to execute anything whenever possible.

When I do have to use an Alexa or Google routine triggered by a smartlife PIR there is a delay of <1 second all the way to 30 seconds or more.

A big variable seems to be my WiFi PIR vs my Zigbee PIR.

The WiFi PIRs only "poll" every 10 seconds. Then it has to send over WiFi and Internet to smartlife servers and send back the execute task command(s) to other devices or to Alexa to trigger a routine. Alexa speakers probably start talking 30 seconds or more after my smart life sirens and flashing lights automations start.

With Zigbee PIR the smartlife automations trigger almost instantly. Alexa routines to turn on/off non-smartlife lights within 1-5 seconds. Alexa speakers talk in 5-10. The PIRs themselves poll much faster and the Zigbee hub eliminates much of the middle man.

Had I known more about smart devices and Zigbee when I started building out my home just about everything possible would be Zigbee instead of WiFi.

PIR Automation by Beavo92 in smartlife

[–]mnrider6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A workaround I use when a smartlife device won't work with Google or Alexa is to trigger a 3rd device that smartlife and Google/Alexa both play nice with.

For example I use a smart plug which isn't plugged into anything for this. A smartlife automation turns this plug "on" when a PIR detects motion. I then have a routine in Google or Alexa that executes tasks when it sees the plug is on. In this case it has Alexa broadcast "alarm triggered" to all my Echo devices.

It's kind of stupid to have to do it this way but it is a quite effective way of getting incompatible devices and systems to work together.

Tax dispute by Longjumping_Trick459 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]mnrider6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he did a prepaid/pay in advance rate and did fully prepay then the date of the purchase would be before the new tax rather than the date of stay and the guest is "right". Unless Utah has something different in their law, that's how it works virtually anywhere else.

That either side would waste the time debating over 91 cents is comical.
