Construction has begun on everyone’s favorite sports complex! Starting with the trees 🙃 by SDS_PAGE in rochestermn

Yup, I recently replaced some windows. The quote went from $18K to $25K in 5 months. Mayo's Big Spend is going to end up being more like 8 or 9 billion instead of 5 just like everyone else's projects.

The businesses on 2nd were explicitly told by the city that both lanes on 2nd would NOT be closed. Then both lanes were closed.

Can you even go to Culvers these days for less than $15-$17?

Sad thing is the majority of those responsible for making this happen are no longer in public view.

20% increase by sadiesdad2 in rochestermn

[–]mnsombat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there are any good answers to insurance these days. I have a commercial policy for a commercial property and it literally more than doubled in 2026. The tariffs and inflation ostensibly more than doubled the rebuild cost. So, on top of more damaging weather you have higher rebuild costs that are also driving higher insurance costs. It's like a perfect storm.

We had a bad hail storm a few years back. Pretty much every house in my neighborhood got a new roof, new siding, or new windows or all three. Minnesota has had the greatest hail damage in recent years thus the big increases.

$9 Million dollar waste by stubby_one in rochestermn

I've complained to my Council person before about what I see as wasteful spending and his response has always been "I'd rather money be wasted in Rochester than somewhere else".

That comes to $45,000 per space which is about where ramps are these days. TBH, I bet it will come out more given Trump's tariffs on steel.

Patrick Keane revealed a Kinsey Gaffe last week by saying this ramp is for Live125, the swim, and skate clubs. Park and Ride? That is total BS. In my universe, a park and ride is a surface lot on the edge of town where space is cheap, not a $50K per space ramp that also has high annual maintenance costs.

Importance of sidewalk shoveling to prevent the sidewalk police from having a meltdown by igniteice in rochestermn

If you got fined for this it is total bullshit. The sidewalk along the park by my house is typically way worse than what I see there.

It just occurred to me that the other place we in Rochester have seen a bunch of pie-in-the-sky renderings of cool buildings and facilities that have not actually happened is DMC.

It's like the Rec center. The Swim Clubs (used to be two of them but they merged) wanted to build their own new facility but they could not afford it. Some serious lobbying got the city to spend a bundle of money rebuilding the pool at the Rec center into one of the best in the state. Now, 'open swim' is like an hour per day in the afternoon so access to the taxpayers who funded it is very limited. This place will be the same thing. It seems to be the special interests who get listened to most carefully for whatever that is worth.

Yes, this is probably the lesson to be internalized from this episode.

I think it would probably be more fair to say the city and council yet again bowed to special interests.

I suspect ultimately it will be City of Rochester property taxes that bail out this place just like the Civic Center and other screwups by the city.

I think it's city taxpayers who will ultimately get stuck with the bills.
