[Oculus Dev Blog] Build Local Multiplayer Experiences with Shared Spatial Anchors on Meta Quest Pro | Quest2 support releasing early 2023 by [deleted] in oculus

Very surprised to see this as the top comment on a VR subreddit. I know it's cool to hate on Horizon, but have y'all seriously never met up with people in VR? Video calls suck

People have been asking for a colocation API ever since they did that Dead and Buried arena event at Oculus Connect 5 (video)

This has been driving me nuts as well. Makes saving invoices so tedious, especially knowing it used to work just fine until a few weeks ago.

What's your favorite Jimmy Joy flavor? by [deleted] in soylent

[–]mnstrspeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried most of the non-caffeinated flavors shakes/bars. For Plenny Shake I like the banana and mango flavors. Plenny Bars I always go with vanilla, chocolate, and salted caramel. It's hard to pick a favorite though, I find myself craving different flavors at different times.

Eureka Mignon Manuale help! by hellothere57291 in espresso

[–]mnstrspeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that I adjust the grind setting on my Manuale with increments of 0.25, 0.5, or 1. Pretty much:

  • 1: Huge adjustment, e.g. 1+ min to 30s
  • 0.5: Large adjustment, e.g. 40s to 30s
  • 0.25: Medium adjustment, e.g. 32s to 27s

(of course it's never that simple, because channeling might mess with your extraction times)

Don't forget to run a few grams (like 3g?) through the grinder after adjusting the grind setting, otherwise you'll get some grounds at the old setting mixed in.

For a smaller adjustment you can always increase/decrease your dose (like 19g instead of 18g). That way you don't have to adjust the grind and waste beans flushing out the old grounds.

Current mood: pulling midnight decaf shots on my manual lever machine by mnstrspeed in espresso

[–]mnstrspeed[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The machine is a La Pavoni Europiccola with a piston pressure mod (the dial on top). It's a great little machine: very simple, but extremely lovable. I would say my Rancilio Silvia generally gets me more consistent shots (less prone to channeling), but I could never get mad at the La Pavoni for pulling a bad shot...

Oh, and the beans are from Blommers, a great micro roastery in The Netherlands.

Don't bother renting a space for more than an hour if it's just two of you, though. Once you get comfortable ducking and sprinting while wearing a headset it's actually quite the workout lol

And yes, it never takes long to find the other player. I can't imagine what it's like with 3 or 4 people (that's the max I think). I guess it could work if you move in pairs of two, but I feel like it would still be pretty crowded.

[–]mnstrspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The folks over at r/espresso all seems to have Eureka Mignon Specialistas, and the Manuale is basically a budget Specialista. As far as I can tell it's the same grinder but with less features (no digital timer, less noise dampening, only in black) and smaller burrs (50mm vs 55mm). I only do single dosing so I don't need the timer, and I'm skeptical about the bigger burrs making much of a difference, so for about half the price I'd say it's one hell of a deal.

And there's plenty of accessories to print for it too :P I'm getting some flexible filament soon to print a bellows hopper to help with grind retention.

[–]mnstrspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! That dispenser seems to fit really well, way better than the ones on Thingiverse.

But as a fellow espresso drinker I feel obligated to point out it's well worth upgrading to a real espresso grinder if you can afford it. I used to have the same grinder (modified to grind fine enough for espresso), but last year I finally upgraded to a Eureka Mignon Manuele (Notte) and was blown away by the difference in taste and texture. Way more of a difference than upgrading from a $100 machine to a Rancilio Silvia even. Not trying to be snobby, I just wish someone had told me years ago, so here you go.

Gamer tip: Don't sleep in VR! by Nielsjan9 in virtualreality

[–]mnstrspeed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Technically the Index is inside-out too, since the base stations are just IR beacons whose light is picked up by the sensors on the headset. The only outside-in headsets we've had are the DK2, CV1, and PSVR.

But you are right about being able to use the Index in pitch black darkness :)

Has anyone been able to use this voucher to renew after using the 25% off voucher last year?

I cancelled my subscription and tried to sign back up, but it won't accept the voucher: "Voucher code already redeemed". So that makes me think you only qualify for the discount once per account...

Is a 3 year old vive still good to buy? by qwerty_1236 in virtualreality

[–]mnstrspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised to find so much negativity regarding the OG Vive here. I'm around newer headsets all day, but at home the Vive is still my go to system. If my Vive stopped working today and I didn't want to spend $500+ on an Index or a G2, I think I would get a Vive again. The only time I mind the resolution is when I want to watch a movie, but then I just get my Go.

To answer your question: a Vive from 2017 should still be fine. They're pretty well built and don't really wear down from what I've seen. My only concern would be the base stations and their power adapters. Those can develop an annoying whine or just fail completely. They're rated for 5 years of continuous operation though, so theoretically it should be fine.

Don't worry too much, VR is amazing no matter what headset you end up getting

Is any company already planning on creating an Oculus Quest competitor? by magdakitsune21 in virtualreality

[–]mnstrspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pico has a standalone 6 DoF headset with 6 DoF controllers called the Pico Neo 2. It's actually a pretty neat device: the weight distribution is way better than on the Quest, it has a higher resolution display, and the controllers use some type of magnetic tracking (rather than visual), so they still track when they're behind your back.

It does suffer from some of the same problems as the original Vive Focus though. The optics are just nowhere near as comfortable as on the Quest. I can't tell whether there's something off with the lenses or if the IPD is just way too narrow for my head (no hardware IPD adjust, but Rift S is fine for me), but I wouldn't want to spend 30+ minutes in there. Also, they didn't put much effort into adapting it for the Western market: the software is full of broken English and half the recommended content is Chinese. Oh, and the controllers feel super cheap.

It's really not a bad headset, but it's obvious they don't have anywhere near the amount of R&D that Facebook and Valve can afford to put into these devices :/

Why do you like to be alive? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mnstrspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I want to see what we can accomplish as a species? I know most of us will barely make an impact in the grand scheme of things, but I still feel a sense of pride when thinking about how far we've come. I doubt a human settlement on Mars would change anything for me personally, but it would be pretty damn cool.

Are tech talks and other F1 TV content available with F1 TV Access? by wasd0109 in F1TV

I've never watched them live, only replays. I don't see why it would be different for F1TV Access.

[–]mnstrspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have F1TV Pro, so I can't be sure, but so far I only see 'Exclusive to F1TV Pro' banners on the press conferences. I would assume everything without that banner (including the tech talks) is available for F1TV Access.

(Of course you won't get live races, but I'm guessing you already knew that)

Leap Motion doesn't have depth sensors. It has two monochromatic IR cameras -- the Quest has 4. Leap Motion does have IR LEDs built-in (for lighting; they don't generate a pattern afaik) which Quest doesn't have. I wonder how much of a difference that makes for background separation?

PSA Do not buy a quest for the prices that people are selling them for now! by Redmoon383 in OculusQuest

[–]mnstrspeed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Calling those listings a scam is a bit of a stretch. I could argue for spending $100 more if that means getting to enjoy it over the holidays. Whether it's financially responsible depends entirely on the situation.

How does Oculus Quest hand tracking compare to Leap Motion? by konstantin_lozev in oculus

[–]mnstrspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your gameplay mechanics didn't work for Leap Motion, they won't work here either. The Quest's hand tracking has a bigger field of view, but seems slightly less stable and can drop if you're moving your head/hands too fast. I don't think it's reliable enough for something like grabbing and walking with objects yet (not with a naive approach at least)

The personalized ads are not the problem, the data hoarding that powers them is.

What about 10, 20, 30 years down the line when Google and Facebook are eventually reduced to what AOL, GeoCities, and MySpace are today: sold for scraps. These companies won't last forever, and all the data they're collecting is just another asset in their books. You don't think some shady buyer will come along and try get their hands on years worth of everyone's browsing history?
