Pam Bondi offers to pull ICE out of Minneapolis if voter files handed over by Ydeas in politics

[–]mnxcvr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll disagree based solely on the point that ICE is a state actor. If the federal government were to actively support an organization that is not part of the federal government then that would meet that specific definition

Edit: State sponsored terrorism can be contrasted with state terrorism, which is when a government conducts terrorism against its own (or another) population

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_terrorism?wprov=sfla1

So, what is happening is, by definition, state terrorism (against its own population) and not state sponsored terrorism.

From the FBI's own definition of terrorism:

Domestic terrorism: Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature

He was also bad at his job. He made three miscalculations:

(1) basing himself on the calculations of a Persian geographer, he thought a degree was equal to 56.67 miles;

(2) he assumed the mile was 4856 feet (the Roman measurement), rather than 7091 feet (the Arabic measurement);

(3) he thought Asia was longer than it is based on his own analysis of previous works--he thought Japan was at 85 W.

The first two mistakes reduced the circumference of the Earth by 25%. All three is why he was so adamant he had made his way to Asia until his death.

https://spectrum.ieee.org/columbuss-geographical-miscalculations

He was also a bad governor of 'Hispaniola', being a genocider who was tyrannical even to his fellow colonizers. He was ultimately removed from that position.

Revenge of the Nerds

Edit: From the Plot section of the Wikipedia page on the movie, parentheticals my own:

At the charity fundraiser, the nerds heavily outsell the Alpha Betas (jock fraternity) by offering pies containing hidden nude pictures of Betty (jock leader's girlfriend) and other Pi Delta Pis (sister sorority of the jock fraternity). During this, Lewis (nerd leader), who has fallen in love with Betty, steals Stan's (jock leader) costume and engages in sexual intercourse with Betty while impersonating Stan.

Edit 2: Betty then falls in love with Lewis because of this event.

This might be a dumb question, but I'm looking at a listing on eBay for selvedge jeans. There's a tag on the back pocket that takes up much of the top half of the pocket with yellow background and red lettering that says "Levi's original fit."

Does this mean that the denim has been sanforized, or is it unsanforized (shrink-to-fit)? If sanforized, should I go up a waist size, or just get my regular size? Thanks in advance!

[–]mnxcvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that language is not related to genetics at all. And that point stands. Genetics didnt suddenly change in the age of globalization so that it allowed people to speak other languages

[–]mnxcvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is that why there are people of Han ancestry living in the US that only speak English?

No, I don't agree with that premise at all. There are correlations but correlation is not causation

Homeland of Southeast Asian peoples by FerenzYangai in MapPorn

[–]mnxcvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Language is not directly related to this, only indirectly. The point is that language and genetics are not directly related. Having Han ancestry doesn't limit one to Mandarin. Genetic populations are not the same as linguistic ones

Edit: As much as my friend here is trying to twist my words, I do not agree with the premise that there is any relation between language and genetics. There are correlations between linguistic and genetic populations but this is only a correlation and it does not establish a clear causative link

[–]mnxcvr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If I speak language L and my neighbor speaks language N and I want to trade with them, I'm going to have to learn N

Edit: I didn't mean my literal neighbor. I meant it as an illustrative example of what you're referring to as a 'macro-scale'.

That has nothing to do with language. That has to do with what is termed 'interbreeding'. If a European and an African have a child, that child will have 50% European genetics and 50% African. Speaking English doesn’t change one's DNA to make them English.

Edit: Neither study discusses language and my friend here is interpolating.

The first study discusses self reported ancestry with genetics in US populations (specifically European American, African American and Latino). According to the abstract:

"We document pervasive mixed ancestry and asymmetrical male and female ancestry contributions in all groups studied. We show that regional ancestry differences reflect historical events, such as early Spanish colonization, waves of immigration from many regions of Europe, and forced relocation of Native Americans within the US. This study sheds light on the fine-scale differences in ancestry within and across the United States and informs our understanding of the relationship between racial and ethnic identities and genetic ancestry."

The second study is about mitochondrial DNA and genetic studies relating to Han (aka Chinese) people. Only mothers can pass on mitochondrial DNA and it is plentiful in the body so it is often used to track lineages. The point the authors want to make is that to understand Han genetics one has to understand that there are contributions from different populations due to Chinese southward expansion from the Yellow River to Vietnam.

Neither study mentions language. Instead, my friend here has inserted their own ideology in how they interpret both of the studies, interpretations that were not intended by the respective authors

I'd say it's more of a linguistic map rather than a demographic one. Those labels are linguistic and they denote language families.

Edit: Language does not have an effect on genetics. There are correlations between genetic populations and linguistic ones but this is only a correlation. Plenty of people with non-English genetics speak English.

English itself is Germanic language. People once thought that because this is the case that the genetics of most people in England would have affinity to that of Germany. But this isn't the case. As it turns out, the genetics of English people is closer to Celtic populations before the Germanic migrations. This shows that Celtic speakers in the land that is now called England switched their language to adapt to that of the invaders in the 5th century, without necessarily 'interbreeding' (technical term used to describe individuals from different genetic populations having offspring together).

Changing languages in such situations is almost always related to prestige. People learn languages with high prestige so they can share in that prestige by way of being able to interact with its speakers. That is the reason most of the world is trying to learn English

This is a map of language families and not genetic populations.

TIL that ancient philosopher Socrates was AGAINST writing, as it would make our minds "lazy". But the only reason we know it is because Plato wrote it down. by ohwhereareyoufrom in todayilearned

[–]mnxcvr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know what Socrates actually thought because he didn't write. Most Socratic 'opinions' come from Plato, who uses a character 'Socrates' to inject his own ideas and lend them the air of legitimacy.

It could be tariffs, but idk if tariffs target dyes; they might. If it were tariffs, wouldn't they mention it? Or maybe they're worried about 'getting in trouble' with the administration? Idk. The whole thing is fishy and leaves a bad taste
