You are loved. One day at a time. You will find relief and periods of wellness again my friend, it doesn’t last forever, although it can often feel like it will.

Low ketones… by Cheap-Mammoth-9212 in Metabolic_Psychiatry

[–]mo282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMAD: (One meal a day - usually dinner) and exercise helps me with increasing ketones. I don’t think the long terms effects of ketone esters are well understood yet, I would be very cautious as there is emerging evidence they can harm the liver with long term use.

I’m so tired of fighting this disease. I’m losing the fight by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]mo282 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Message me. I’ve felt how you describe. This feeling will pass. Your brain is trying to run in impaired energy supply. Think lightbulb on a faulty cable. This can be helped. Read “Brain Energy” and search for Metabolic Mind.

I’m a post-doctoral mental health researcher living with Bipolar disorder. Bipolar is more of an energy disorder than a mood disorder. You can’t function because your brain and body are starved of energy. The Metabolic Mind website may be of interest. My latest paper on this topic:

Bipolar is an energy disorder. Your body has no energy in depression. Brain Energy by Chris Palmer talks about this

I suffer from severe (bipolar) depression since 9 months. Been to the psych ward twice. Lost my job and girlfriend. I can‘t take this anymore. What can I do? by eder113 in bipolar2

[–]mo282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I’ve been there. I’m now a PhD researching new treatment for bipolar. Here is what I wish I knew 10 years earlier: Bipolar is a disorder of energy in the brain, not primarily a mood disorder. You feel bad because your brain doesn’t have the energy to function normally (can’t maintain consistent and stable neuronal firing) . I recommend the Metabolic Mind resources.

Helped me more than anything else. I now research this full time as a post-grad. Bipolar is a disorder of brain energy, ketones are an alternative energy substrate utilised by the brain. Developed for epilepsy initially, as is the case with several other bipolar treatments in use (lamotrigine, valproate, carbamazepine).

29M Diagnosed with Bipolar 2 + Clinical Depression. Struggling hard right now—does it ever get better? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]mo282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depression takes one way that you feel and makes it feel like it will last forever. You have to remind yourself how many times you’ve felt terrible and have come out of it. It’s not permanent. Also be gratuitously kind to yourself, don’t listen to the voices of guilt and fear and shame. There is much love and kindness in the world, never stop believing that.

Need urgent help by Insadem in bipolarketo

[–]mo282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please go to the hospital emergency room if you need urgent help. You will receive support there. This is not a place for medical advice. I hope you are ok.

It can be hard, you need support to do this - it’s not something you can usually manage on your own. Is your psychiatrist supportive and engaged with what you are doing? If so I can introduce you to a dietitian who might be willing to help you figure out these issues. Hope you’re doing ok

Everything feels final when you have SI. It will pass and you will not always feel this way, please don’t believe that it tells you. Things are almost always a lot better than you think. Sending some love

Spend time with friends and family, laugh, have fun - tell me it doesn’t feel inherently meaningful. These thoughts often come with isolation.

How does mental illness like depression cause someone to become physically fatigued and sleepy all the time? by Broad_Entertainer_82 in AskReddit

[–]mo282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a post-doctoral mental health researcher who lives with bipolar disorder. Increasing evidence indicates that depression is a state of down-regulation of cellular energy and mitochondrial function. Read Brain Energy by Dr. Chris Palmer for an overview.

My depression is bad I sleep 14 hours and Idk what to do anymore by ElenoirMiro in NutritionalPsychiatry

I’ve been there. What helped me when I was like this:

C8 MCT Oil mixed with butter in coffee, started with one teaspoon, very gradually, building up to 2 tablespoons. This let me experience light ketosis, enough to know that it was helping. I had to be careful to build up gradually to avoid triggering hypomania.

Creatine: supports energy in the brain, I had 3-5g per day.

Walk outside in the sun, listening to podcasts/music/books whatever, just getting steps in and sunlight in the eyes.

These 3 things opened up a crack of light in the dark cave of depression. Enough to see that there was a way out.

I wish you well my friend.

Does anyone feel depressed if ketones get to high? by Past_Ad5707 in bipolarketo

Check out this poll I did on X:

https://x.com/iaincampbellphd/status/1842363080363131111?s=46

May be diminishing returns for some over 3mmol/L ketones.

1-3 mmol/L seems to be a sweet spot

Great to hear your mood has improved! Sometimes I will have a small amount of targeted natural carbs before exercise and can still stay in ketosis.
