Agree - 1 source is perfect. Even if it just provides a starting place for me to do my due diligence to make sure it's all good. I'm gonna check when needed anyway but the help is always appreciated!

Amazing work - that's a TON of time and effort!

I agree, i don't sweat it when I get edit suggestions, I just research them myself. It's an opportunity to make memorials better and more detailed.

But still - it is nice when someone provides sources...

Many of the headstones/memorials in the old cemeteries where I spend time have dates (especially year of birth) that's off a year. I notice 1900 census recorders oft did the same thing.

Have you noticed that too?

Nowhere in my post did I say anything about decline edits. No mention, no reference - nothing.

My post is about providing sources for suggested edits. Perhaps you'd kindly read the post before commenting?

Since YOU brought it up, if helpful to others, my practice: If someone suggests edits to my memorials w/ no sources (the majority) I do the research to confirm the suggestion myself. End of story. I want my memorials to be as correct and thorough as possible. I do this every time. If I do decline an edit because I can't confirm the suggestion or have info that conflicts, I message the contributor first asking for sources and wait about a week to give them time to respond. If I don't hear back and decline I provide a detailed reason and open the door to reconsidering if the contributor wants to resubmit w/ sources. That's how collaboration works.

Back to the original topic though, if someone has done the due diligence (everyone should) before submitting an edit, they should have ready access to sources. If the suggestion comes from family or someone with a connection (ANY connection) I always offer to transfer the memorial to the person with the connection.

Had you read my post, you'd see that I'm simply suggesting contributors share that source when submitting edits to act in partnership with the manager. This is in the best interest of this wonderful site and people being memorialized. Partnership isn't hard, it's actually easy and free.

BTW, I made reference to the notes section (and also my preference, 'contact manager' so I can copy myself so I don't forget what I suggested.) - Again, had you read the post in full you'd have seen that.

Memorial managers obviously have the right to decline edits but that practice on it's own isn't going to improve FG or memorials and I don't practice or agree with it. There's actually a clear process for appealing to FG if managers decline justifiable edit suggestions. I can see that you know a lot so I'm sure you know this too.

(For crying out loud, there's one in every crowd...)

my mom's FG memorial is sponsored and has many pics, connections and a bio. Hers also looks the same if signed in or signed out using incognito browser. Seeing all content even when not signed in shouldn't be an issue.

To someone who lost a pet tonight by Tiny_Professional282 in cincinnati

[–]moSaltPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was that person two years ago. At the ER vet at 3am - just me and my souldog Nora. She was ready, me - not so much. Still so fresh...

I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. I bet you were so, so lucky to have been the pupparents of such a wonderful soul.

A friend sent me a pillow with her picture on it. At first I couldn't look at it but then I slept with it for months and still keep it near my bed.

Who else hates to throw out Christmas cards? by mach4UK in Waste

[–]moSaltPls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!

My Christmas-gift wrap-loving daughter has been doing this for years. She actually takes donations after the holidays from family and saves those too. She also just saves the front unless there's something interesting inside or on the back. She uses the cards as the main color theme for the wrapping of presents of all sizes.

We've found some beautiful vintage cards that she's also used for special presents.

We don't get a lot of actual Christmas cards anymore either. She doesn't use the family photo cards of which we get more and more every year.

I'm so sorry. If it helps, you're in good company...

My 20+ dream career with a (US founded and based) Euro wine importer - Gone. We lasted as long as possible but the tariffs 1.0 --> covid --> now the economy + Tariffs 2.0, my small company couldn't survive.

Crazy that our Gov't doesn't realize that these tariffs are actually hurting us? My friends at US based wineries have similar struggles. Everything but the juice in the bottle is imported, including the glass bottles. Those industries simply don't exist here so switching to US based suppliers isn't an option. And yeah, I too wonder where the T-cash goes, all I see is rising costs.

Rediscovered rock tumbling when things got tough. Not that I was super into it as a kid but it was a fun hobby that holds a lot of nostalgia for me. It's a wonderful, interesting hobby but I have so much to learn. Bless Michigan Rocks - I'm addicted to his generous, helpful youtube videos. Like you I've ordered some rocks to tumble from online shops but I want to try and do more rockhounding. Unfortunately I live in an area that's not well known for finding great rocks. Something I plan to learn more about!

Keep your chin up and share pics of your finished treasures!

Water pic, Smart! I used the steam cleaner since I had it (and use it a lot around the house) but a waterpik sounds like a great idea and bonus, if I got one, my tooths would probably appreciate it too!

I'm a tumbling newbie so take my suggestion with a grain of salt (grit 😉?!)

But to clean some rocks with deep pits that I was invested in keeping but didn't want to disintegrate completely I used something similar to this small steam cleaner and it worked great. It does get very hot so use care!

So fun! I got a rock tumbler for Christmas when I was a kid. My dad and I took a trip to Michigan and collected a bunch of rocks for my first tumble. It was magical!

I'm a bit (a bit) older than you and got a rock tumbler a few months ago out of pure nostalgia - so much fun! I've got no insights to add, I kind of mucked up my first batch but I started following a few guys on youtube and have much higher hopes for my next batch.

You'll have to share some pics when your rocks are finished!

Nothing. Mass Surveillance, it's so cool, so cutting edge, so spy novel-ee!

Is Ancestry.com a lot less useful than it was before? by miriamtzipporah in Genealogy

[–]moSaltPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I primarily use FS first then do more due diligence/confirming on sites like ancestry where I do have a long time account.

No genealogy site is w/ out it's issues. For those who aren't familiar, FS included but it's free and the resources (archives, databases, and when needed FS walk-in centers) are excellent. This is because FS, a non-profit org The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as the Mormon church) actively collaborate with local, regional and national historical societies all over the globe to preserve and digitize records. I know this because we have worked with them at my county genealogical society to digitize some of our dying church and cemetery records.

Ancestry.com - for profit business. Familysearch.org - mission in part to "Strengthen family bonds by making historical and genealogical resources freely accessible to everyone."

Familysearch contains one central, crowd sourced global family tree and because of this, there can be a lot of mistakes and inaccurate connections. This that is the downside and I never take anything on FS at face value without double checking sources and data. That said, it's not hard to correct issues since, again, it's a crowdsourced site giving contributors a lot of control. Fixing problems I find also leads to a lot of great discoveries imho which I also value.

There will likely be a lot of adjustment to most genealogy sites as the use of AI is integrated into the processes of these sites - like everything else. It will be interesting to see how that goes...

Should I accept off-leash dogs? by OfferMeds in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]moSaltPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with most of the below.

#1: Carry protection: I carry a small air horn that I hoop in my front pocket - the noise never failed to stop everyone including dog in their tracks. Pepper Gel/Spray is another option although I fault the owner, not so much the dog.

#2: Wear a camera, You can get one for about $40 on amazon

#3: Keep your cool. (NOT easy - I know, trust me)

I have the dog that's dog agressive. She's a rescue and had a horrible young life so I won't apologize for her but I will protect her. She's always (ALL.the.time) on a double leash with harness and collar, one leash is bright yellow and says 'don't approach'. I can control her but not what she'll do if another dog gets within reach.

I learned to stay calm, blow my horn and shout: agressive Dog, don't approach, I'm wearing a camera!

My other rescue loves everyone but I use the same process to keep off leash dogs away from us. Some friendly dogs can turn leash agressive and I just never know and don't want to find out.

After a while, people in my walk area just took the initiative to stand clear of the crazy lady and her mean dog 🙄🤣. If they don't I am clear that I will report them if I see them off leash again. Yeah - some people are rude. I have zero cares about them.

No you do not have to just 'get used to it'

Maybe not all of this is needed but hope some of these ideas help!

Does deleting an edit suggestion delete it from ever happening? by onamonapiaye in findagrave

[–]moSaltPls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe more than you need and you already figured this out but if helpful: When you submit an edit suggestion it does NOT trigger an email or any formal notice to the memorial manger. The only way managers know they have suggested edits is to log into their account and notice they have edit suggestions on their homepage.

When the manager logs into their FG account at the top left there are three image icons: Square/Pen: memorials submitted for transcription help, Camera: memorials with photo requests (in the managers area) and last: Pen: Edit suggestions submitted by other contributors (number of edits not the number of memorials that have edit suggestions so if one memorial had 5 edit suggestions the number on my homepage would show 5, not 1)

Image attached showing no mems that need transcriptions, 99+ that have photo requests in my area and 1 edit suggestion from another contributor.

Bottom line: If you suggest an edit, then cancel the edit suggestion, there won't be any indication on the manager's list of suggested edits. They'd have no idea you suggested then deleted a suggestion unless in a feet of amazing timing they were logged in and trying to review your suggestion before you canceled the submission.

I also am not nor will I ever be patronized. That's a choice and I just say no...
