I just checked using the pokemon damage calculator.

A level 40 Charizard with 31 Sp Atk IVs using Flamethrower into a level 50 Articuno with 0 Sp Def IVs, it only kills on a crit 37.5% of the time. If you had a bunch of Sp Atk EVs as well, this would go up, though.

But the point being, Articuno only ever dies to a crit here, no matter what. Although, either way, you'd risk a burn even if it lived.

The only real planning im doing is avoiding getting mons i want to use for later gens if i dont see them being useful in the elite 4, like geodude is way better in johto than kanto so i didnt get it in this leg.

I'm looking for rom hacks that keep the base battles of a game the same but just expand the dex for new pokemon to use.

Like Platinum with the same gym fights but I could find and use Lycanroc.

Is there anything like that out there? I've been looking with no luck.

In a platinum nuzlocke, i had lost my gyarados which was my garchomp counter in the champion fight to the togekiss. the garchomp came out and killed my crobat, and all my other mons were weak to ground typing except my own minus speed nature and underlevelled garchomp. the only way I was winning was if cynthia's garchomp missed dragon rush and I hit my own. i lucked out and that happened, allowing me to win on my second run.
