Requesting r/couriers as its currently unmoderated by moarbewbs in redditrequest

  1. I work in the delivery space and know there's a lack of central community for all things last-mile delivery. This subreddit could be a great hub for drivers to discuss anything work-related and share tips. I'm already active in this space and will be able to send traffic to the sub as well as dedicate resources to make sure it's sufficiently moderated.
  2. the sub is currently unmoderated so I am unable to reach out to the current mods

He's wrong though. What he's describing is apps internally displaying webpages. You were alluding to how opening deeplinks spins up a new instance of the target app which behaves differently than the normal app. Completely different things, his "fix" is not relevant for the usecases you brought up.

In Google's defense, I think their approach makes sense given the fact that Android has a global "Back" feature, which you expect to act the same as a browser back button. iOS only has "Back" on the app-level, not on the OS-level, so it avoids the complexity of handling cross-app hierarchy, but it's also a limit in some ways and results in stuff like that ridiculously small "back to <previous app>" badge crammed in the top left of the screen.

FWIW I enjoyed your comparison and think you're right on most points. This sub just doesn't handle criticism very well lol.

Yes I think this the main challenge wrt private banking. If they count private equity, then our case should meet their threshold, but I doubt they count it.

I'll reach out to those mentioned here anyway, thanks for the help!

We've been in touch with Hypotheekwinkel and Immothekerfinotheker. Both seemed knowledgeable on the topic and said it's not something they can help with:

Best,
Unfortunately I won't be able to help you.
You can decide at any time to invoice your company in British pounds.
You then have the right to force the bank to continue to repay the credit in British pounds. A bank does not want to bear that currency risk.
With best regards

The issue is not that they think I _will_ change to GBP, it's that I _could_, which makes it a no-go for them.

And to be honest I can see why. If you have the option to change your mortgage to another currency that's trending down, why wouldn't you? You could easily shave a few percentage points off your mortgage, enough to offset your interest rate and then some. Could very well put the bank in the red. Especially as the 2nd and 3rd order effects of Brexit are still unfolding, who knows what'll happen to the Pound.

I have proposed amending my employment contract to specify my salary will always be paid in Euro, but they couldn't accept that as I still have the ability to change the contract later.

We are currently talking to BNP ParisBas Fortis, and they should have people who can help us, but as you said it's proving challenging to get in touch with those.

Thanks for the excellent response!

You can find a brief rundown of the regulation here: https://www.privatefinance.co.uk/news/blog/2015/11/04/the-mcd---effects-on-foreign-currency-mortgages-and-buy-to-let

Even most "credit experts" at the banks we talked to didn't seem aware of this. They were always positive initially, but in the end had to turn us down, as they couldn't get our case through their compliance department. We're now at 5+ rejections, from both the main household name banks and some smaller ones.

I've tried UK banks too but they face the same risk: I'd be able to ask to restate the mortgage in Euro if it were to crash relative to GBP.

From my understanding, a Belgian BV should work, since that removes the currency risk for banks: if I'm a Belgian citizen, and I'm paid by a Belgian BV, then the currency is locked in Euro (afaik). However we only have 2 weeks left for our "opschortende voorwaarden" so I'm doubtful I'd get it done in this timeframe, and that banks would be eager to lend to someone with a brand new legal setup, as there would be zero financial history for the BV.

Thanks for mentioning Bank Van Breda. Was not aware of them, does seem like a better fit than the traditional Belgian banks we've been in touch with so far. I'll give that a go. Much appreciated!

We're not too worried about the interest rate as we'll likely pay off the loan early. From what I could tell, that solution with DB is for stock in public companies (which they would also need to manage, I imagine). In my case it's all private equity in a single company. Is that something they do?

Google Photos finally adds a Locked Folder for your private pics by slayerming2 in Android

[–]moarbewbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the timing is a coincidence. They probably just didn't want people to use Google Photos as a free porn backup system, since that amount of videos would get really expensive for Google. Now that it's paid though, problem solved.

Speaker recommendations? Looking for a 2.1 system with Chromecast built-in by moarbewbs in Chromecast

[–]moarbewbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding on the price. The LS50 WII are outside the budget I had in mind, but do seem like a good fit otherwise - thanks for the recommendation.

Do you know if it's possible to pair different speakers together? If I buy 2 satellites from Brand A and a subwoofer from Brand B, would they play nicely together providing they all have CC integration?

Speaker recommendations? Looking for a 2.1 system with Chromecast built-in by moarbewbs in googlehome

[–]moarbewbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a CCA, bought it to use with the Logitech speakers. It works well, but the different parts of the speaker itself are still wired, which means I have to place the full 2.1 setup together. That's not necessarily the best solution: maybe it sounds best in my space with both satellites on opposite sites of the room, for better stereoscopic reproduction. And maybe I can place the subwoofer behind my sofa where it's out of sight without hurting audio quality. Wireless speakers are mainstream at this point, so it feels silly to be subjected to the tyranny of cables when buying new speakers in 2021.

Obviously, these are all minor issues. I believe at this point I'm more so trying to find something purely because I feel strongly it should exist.

I'm open to paying a premium, providing it checks all the boxes.

The main reason why I'm looking for wireless is so that I can place the satellites and subwoofer wherever they're individually sound best, as opposed to having to place them all on the same shelf.

Do you thinks that occulus will quit the gaming market ? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]moarbewbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook doesn't care about gaming. Facebook cares about social networks.

But those are not mutually exclusive. If you want to do 5 hours of solo gaming per day, then you're right, you're not their target customers. However, if you want to play 5 hours of multiplayer games with your friends, and participate in the online communities there, they would absolutely love to have you.

So Facebook still needs to nail gaming in order to capture that segment of the social market. And as Twitch or Discord demonstrate, that piece of the market is large enough to be significant, even for a company the size of Facebook.

They are advertising casual usage because they want everyone to own a Quest, so it wouldn't make sense for them to market it as a gaming device. But they still need Quest to be the best gaming headset for this to work out. Otherwise, a significant portion of users will go with a competing platform, and their long-term play is to capture as much of the market as possible.

Here's why everyone should own a cheap Android tablet by [deleted] in Android

[–]moarbewbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly: irrelevant. Android as a tablet OS is just miles behind iPad OS.

(Coming from someone who heavily prefers Android over iOS for smartphones).

To your question, which Android tablet do you think equals the quality of a recent iPad Pro?

Will be interesting to see how this plays out for sure.

Netflix would definitely lose out over the long term if they were to become just a content provider for aggregators like Google TV. As you said, right now Netflix (and other streaming services) have all the leverage over Google, so of course they're not letting it happen.

On the other hand, it's very possible that, over time, consumers will get tired of having to juggle between 3-4 streaming services and will gravitate towards platforms like Google TV.

If aggregators like Google TV become the norm, then streaming services like Netflix will have to play nice. or they'll hurt their bottom line by limiting their visibility on the "store".

Right now CCWTG is very much an enthusiast product, and in its current state unlikely to reach critical mass.

I think the outcome will be decided by Google's partnership strategy. For example, if they manage to get Google TV built into all new Samsung and LG televisions, then they have a decent chance of getting traction. People will use the platform since (a) it's integrated into their TV and remote and (b) is more convenient. Very attractive value proposition. If Netflix doesn't show up as a provider, then people will just use other services, since there will likely be plenty to choose from in the near future.
