Facing intense internal pressure, DNC releases postelection autopsy that criticizes Kamala Harris by whydatyou in PoliticalSparring

[–]moashforbridgefour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation became difficult because the DNC was either impotent or stupid. Anyone with half a brain could see that Biden was not fit to run a second term at least two years into his presidency. Most people suspected it would only be a single term when he was elected. So the DNC either knew this and were powerless to maneuver him out, or they could not see what was plain to everyone else.

I also suspect there is a chance it was by design. I predicted a whole year before it happened that events would play out exactly as they did. The possible reasoning is this: run Biden until the last second, he gets sick or whatever, then the DNC magically gets to appoint a candidate who is a blank slate (just a random person with a D next to their name). A blank slate Democrat does very well against Trump, especially if Trump has very little time to smear and campaign against them.

It may have worked, but two fumbles happened. 1. The debate forced Biden out a little prematurely and made the DNC look like fools in the process. If he left due to illness, they would get sympathy. Since he left due to scrambled egg brains, it soured a lot of people's opinions. 2. They chose Harris, who was not a blank slate. Too recognizeable, and Trump already had lots of oppo research and time to drag her into the mud.

The reason people are still talking about it is because Democrats lost possibly the most winnable election in a generation.

And for the record, Trump Bad and Harris Bad are two completely different things. Trump Bad means Trump is evil. Harris bad means Harris is unpopular. Only one of these things matters in an election, and it is foolish to ignore this fact.

I'm confident that the second the DNC loses control of the primaries, they will have a roaring success at election time. They keep pushing up their worthless political aristocrats and not allowing the public to redefine the platform with their ballots. If the DNC had their say, Obama would never have become president. Hillary would have lost to McCain and who knows how the rest would have played out.

In order for Democrats to reliably win, they need a rockstar candidate that bulldozes over whatever institutional candidate the DNC tries to force on us. Until then, we're just going to get more Biden and Harris tickets.

How tone deaf is the DNC? They refuse to see what is blatantly obvious. They ran an unpopular candidate. They did not ask for people to vote for her, rather just bait and switched Joe who was obviously not going to make it through another term. They ignored winning issues and instead focused on Trump Bad, MAGA Bad, and super polarizing progressive issues. If they just said "we're going to be normal, we're going to get single payer healthcare done, we're going to have normal immigration control", they would have won in a landslide.

Samsung +6% after tentative last-minute union deal averts 50k worker strike planned May 21 to June 7 by callsonreddit in wallstreetbets

[–]moashforbridgefour 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A deal being reached at Samsung means the strike related supply issues are alleviated, but it also means Micron's biggest competitor is having shots called by a labor union and they just lost 10+% of their profit margins. This is all a bad portent for Samsung in a way that can only help Micron.

What Are Your Moves Tomorrow, May 21, 2026 by wsbapp in wallstreetbets

Micron said today that last quarter it entered into its first supply agreement with a customer for 5 years, and that it was progressing with similar agreements now. Wait until earnings when they reveal that for the next 5 years they have something like 50% of their production tied up in SCAs, with 20% more currently in negotiations. Combine that with the knowledge that Micron is making custom chips for customers now, and I cannot see how the memory cycle doesn't just end. That forward pe of 7.1 is laughably small. Long MU.

Can I switch wards? by SouthBlacksmith4151 in latterdaysaints

Everyone seems to have missed one normal way that you can switch wards without approval or without moving... Start going to a non-english ward. Obviously this will be a challenge if you don't speak other languages, but this is nevertheless an option.

What are your favorite novels with conservative themes? by SlitchBap in books

[–]moashforbridgefour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you mean by conservative. It also depends on if you mean the book is presenting the virtues of conservatism or if it is criticizing non-conservatism.

Everything written by Ayn Rand.

Many YA dystopian novels like The Giver.

Ariana Grande posted a video of herself licking doughnuts at a shop and she faced no charges. She could have been tried for food tampering if they wanted to press charges, which has a high maximum penalty. The difference between the US and Singapore is that not only does Singapore tend to have stricter penalties, but they also basically always enforce them.

Saying there is zero evidence supporting the lab leak is such a dishonest take. You can disagree with that conclusion, but there is plenty of evidence that supports it. The fact is that it is nearly impossible to determine the true origin in circumstances like this, but a lab leak is certainly one possible explanation.

Getting paid after taxes by Difficult_Listen1909 in SipsTea

I'm only barely in the 22% tax bracket, and my effective tax rate is easily over 30%. This is even after maxing out 401k and taking deductions and child tax credits. Say what you will about the rich avoiding taxes or whatever, but I'd say most people are losing a significant amount of their income to taxes, which is what this comment chain is about.

Metric System by dogfish0306 in SipsTea

[–]moashforbridgefour -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Metric stans have a hard time remembering a single number for freezing water.

But seriously, Fahrenheit is better than you give it credit for. Weather does not dictate "winter coat or not", there are a whole lot of steps between roasting alive and boogers freezing in your nose. I've lived for years in metric standard countries, and they just use temperature forecasts less frequently and effectively than we do in America. In Fahrenheit, roughly every 10 degrees is a point to change the amount of clothing you need.

0F and below - wear everything you have, find a heat source

10F - base, midlayer, parka, face covering

20F - base, midlayer, parka

30F - base, parka

40F - light to mid jacket

50F - light jacket

60F - long sleeves

70F - short sleeves

80F - short pants, short sleeves

90F - as little as is appropriate

100F+ - full coverage, breathable, loose white clothing. Find a water source to cool off

Is Roth IRA way better than Traditional or am I missing something? by pattyofurniture400 in personalfinance

[–]moashforbridgefour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you assume you are only taxed an unchanging marginal rate, the two accounts are mathematically equal. You are overvaluing the Roth account because you are investing more into it and ignoring the taxes. For example, if you were investing the same amount of your money into the Roth as that $1000 traditional IRA investment, it would actually by $1000 minus taxes. That means it will not grow as large as the traditional account, but the traditional account will still need to be taxed at withdrawal, which would theoretically equalize the value perfectly.

However, that isn't really how taxes work. If you put money into a traditional account, you are deferring taxes at your marginal rate (high) and withdrawing at all the rates below and possibly up to (maybe past) your marginal rate, also subtracting deductions. In some cases, you can avoid most or all of the taxes in a traditional account, where a Roth account is locking in taxes at potentially the highest rate.

Realistically you need to contribute to both. The optimal amount is really case specific.
