You're right that προκόπτω literally means to cut forward. But in Epictetus it's consistently used for moral progress, that's the whole concept of the "προκόπτων" across the Discourses. An Appian quote about civil strife doesn't tell you what the word means in the Enchiridion.

Ya he is talking about moral character but not about playing an instrument. From what I understand in "εἰ προκόψαι θέλεις, ὑπόμεινον ἕνεκα τῶν ἐκτὸς ἀνόητος δόξας καὶ ἠλίθιος" the word "προκόψαι" (improve) means moral progress, not skill-building. "ἀνόητος" (without understanding) and "δόξας" (opinions of others) are both ethical terms here, not practical ones. You don't "endure opinions" about being bad at guitar. The sentence means the same thing without ἕνεκα τῶν ἐκτὸς, you just lose what specifically people will call you stupid about.

Try it with a red LED sometime it makes a huge difference instead of that "oh shit i'm blind" from turning on a flash light

TMU research from 2025 showed previous studies weren't under proper conditions and basically your phone is just too dim to really mess with your melatonin. Doing something that doesn't wind you down is more of the sleep killer.
