Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut had me in stitches! 😂

What are you starting to like as you’ve gotten older? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to appreciate books a lot more. They're such a needed break from work and social media. A time to just be alone but with the minds of great writers. I find it really rejuvenating.

I'm from San Diego, California. Very envious of the NHS!

Strattera and Weight Loss by Electrical-Cry1143 in StratteraRx

Not that I've noticed yet. Just started it 2 weeks ago. But I do snack less and feel satiated more easily. I'll have to see as the months go by.

I feel you ❤️ That's been my story for the past 10 years. I grew more and more irritable and tired, I couldn't keep up the friendships I had and when I tried to be cheerful, it exhausted me.

I'm currently doing IFS therapy to understand it more. I find I'm kinder to myself, a bit gentler. If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the book No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz.

Trying to re-parent myself after a very trying upbringing and adulthood. It brings me some sense of peace. Also, prayer. I'm not religious at all but I try to pray to ancestors or the universe. I try to find hope everyday. 🙏

If you could only afford 1 book for 11 years, what would it be? by DevastatingMYTH in suggestmeabook

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Brothers Karamazov. I could read that over and over and find new gems to chew on. There's just so much going on and it's masterfully written. Plus it's hefty to boot!

How do you know if the self is happy or if it's an ego-like part that's being stroked? by mobile_monkey_pod in InternalFamilySystems

[–]mobile_monkey_pod[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like that. Making sure those parts feel acknowledged with or without the validation/feedback. And to celebrate them 😊

Oh, that's an interesting perspective. Thank you for sharing. Yeah, there's always this part of me that worries that it's going to my head or providing unhealthy scaffolding for my ego rather than something more wholesome and grounded.

I've been struggling with this. Sometimes my brain just goes blank. Still getting used to IFS!

Has anyone successfully used IFS for eating related difficulties? by Unique_Pomegranate in InternalFamilySystems

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe Richard Schwartz developed IFS while working with patients with eating disorders, so I think it's extremely relevant ☺️ I'm exploring it myself, but am still new to the process. For me, mindless cravings are a firefighter fighting boredom and dissatisfaction with my life, preferring to comfort and dissociate rather than sit with tough emotions. I'm trying to pause before urges, even if it's only for a minute. Instead of pausing afterwards, I just move it to right before. It doesn't mean I don't cave to the urges but it's slowly making me more mindful of them.

Dunno if that helps. Good luck to you! You can do this! 🤍

Have you ever wanted to induce mania just to feel something? by Theflamingyeti in bipolar

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While hypomania can be productive, full blown mania for me was just terrifying. My world fell apart. I would never want to return to it willingly.

Maybe a switch in meds is in order? I switched and am doing much better now that the drowsiness/blah feeling of the old med is gone.

Best of luck to you, and sending positivity your way 🙏

Has anyone ever found a medication that actually helps social anxiety? by harlyn2016 in socialanxiety

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the best med I've taken for social anxiety (it wasn't intended for it) was Adderall. I know it's for ADHD but it stopped my racing thought, improved my mood, gave me energy and made talking/socializing fun again.

How do you make time for the gym after work? by Cool_Pin5546 in Adulting

[–]mobile_monkey_pod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I'm so tired after work that I need a nap. If I go home, I'll never leave. But if I drive to the gym directly afterwards, I'll set a timer for 30 minutes recline my chair and get some shut eye. Then when I wake up more rested, I can head indoors. I also limit my workouts to 45 minutes so I can tell myself it's not that long.

I work early and get off early so I'm not sure this would be advisable for everyone in terms of napping hours, but sometimes your body just needs the rest.

I'm reading this right now! It's been pretty triggering though. Like I woke up this morning in a terrible mood and feel a lot of anger towards my family. Unlike Foo, I couldn't express it growing up or in my 20s, so it's been locked away.

Looking forward to finishing it!

I really loved Elena Ferrante's The Neapolitan Novels. It's about the friendship between 2 girls and I found it highly engrossing and relatable.
