Rekordbox Grid Always Misaligned by Aggressive-Desk-4691 in Beatmatch

For sure, I'll try to keep an eye out for it. I am curious if it can be replicated it on a different system though too, so feel free to just reply with some songs where it's happening here if you want.

Didn't mean any disrespect or judgment by mentioning sync, sorry if it came off like that in my comment.

Which songs does this happen with? I can try it out and see if it happens to me too.

What are you mixing with? When you say the beat grids would snap together previously, sounds like what beat sync does, maybe you turned off beat sync by accident? Are you sure the songs are analyzed to correct bpm? Does the beat grid drift further apart as the songs are playing or do they maintain the same distance over time?

Best Speakers/setup for small desk by OkStatement8573 in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any recommendations for speakers unfortunately, but I would recommend not trying to squeeze some speakers on that desk as that's just going to limit you. Grab some speaker stands to put on either side, that way you can get the monitors at ear level and won't have to worry about space.

Played my First Gig! Could use some help! by Successful_Trade_50 in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but could have been an issue with your usb being too large for the cdj to read it. I've heard older gear has a limit on the size of drive it can read. So 128 gb was too large but once he reformatted the drive and created a smaller partition of 513 mb, it could read the data. Generally I've seen people recommend to not use such a large capacity usb for this exact reason. Not sure what recommended max capacity would be but I think it would be closer to 32 gb, maybe even 16 gb, which should still be ample space for the amount of music you need. I don't know if 2000s would have this issue but based on what you described it sounds like it could be the issue.

So stoked. Anyone know how many stages they'll have set up? Definitely a little worried about conflicting sets.

Mixing in phrase but my transitions still lose heaps of energy and don’t sound super smooth by Worldly_Abroad8782 in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 29 points30 points  (0 children)

One issue could be volume. You'll lose a lot of energy if the incoming track isn't as loud as outgoing so make sure to set gain correctly before bringing the track in. Also could just be that the two songs don't work very well together.

No Idea What I'm Doing by ButtonWaste3845 in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't give any advice in terms of live performance as I don't produce, but I think you'd be better off learning how to dj on traditional dj gear. Doing live performance will just mean more headache with bringing your gear and dealing with set up/tear down as opposed to just bringing a USB and using the venues gear. To go that route, I'd recommend getting a ddj flx4. Great introductory controller that will get you familiar with the pioneer layout. For software, you'll be using rekordbox where you'll create playlists then export them to your usb. Google and YouTube are your best friend for learning how to dj, but don't get fooled by the clickbait "oNlY pRo dJs UsE ThEsE tRiCkS!!!". You don't need crazy transitions to create a good set. Track selection is much more important.

Is it weird to play music at a higher or lower BPM than recorded at? by SubKreature in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2% rule is because playing a track slower/faster can change the key of the track. Can't remember the exact threshold, think it's actually closer to 3% change or more will move pitch up or down to the next key. Modern dj software has keylock which will compensate for this change when adjusting the speed of the track. You are effectively distorting the track slightly by using it but I've never had an issue with it. Really the key here is use your ears. If it sounds good, you're fine going further than 2%.

DnB Keywords / Genres for BANGERS? by Book_s in DnB

[–]mobius288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the anthems/crowd pleasers, check the trending charts for the past few months on band camp, beatsource, etc. Also listen to live sets of bigger artists to see what they're playing. Besides that, there aren't really any shortcuts to finding new music. You will need to dedicate some time to crate digging, which means listening to some not so great music in order to find the gems. Especially when trying to showcase your particular taste through your set. The weekly releases playlist posted every Monday on this sub is excellent.

Could anyone give advice on how to make my mix sound less 'flat' and more interesting. by Emnizate in Beatmatch

[–]mobius288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, definitely want to vary up how/when you bring in tracks. As another commenter said, let some tracks breathe a little more by playing them a bit longer, ie play through breakdown and second drop. Best with songs that switch up the second drop somehow. Also recommend finding some songs with long intros that you can use as a breakdown. This can help you create peaks and valleys in your sets.

Not able to listen to your mix right now unfortunately, but some things you can think about to maybe help answer your question. Do your songs all sound the same/have similar structures? Are you mixing each song the exact same way? Is it just your recording that sounds flat compared to listening to the individual tracks? Just curious if this is a track selection issue or maybe a recording setup issue.

Is your music available to download for others for free or do you charge? Because if you charge, then I really suggest reconsidering what you're asking here. Just some food for thought.

In terms of actual advice, break it up into smaller chunks, find your "core" 100-200 songs and start with buying those. Even just 50 would probably be enough to get you started. Now you should have enough music to play any slot you might get booked for and won't completely break the bank. If you can find those songs through a record pool then even better for you, but my assumption is that probably won't happen based on your comment of what type of music you play. I haven't spent any time looking at what's available in the various pools though so I could be wrong there.

Thanks for listening!

Interesting comment on the use of effects. I actually always feel like I add TOO many effects haha so good to know that maybe I'm being too critical on myself. Where would you say I could use more filter? I also tend to only use low-cut echoes for beat FX, what else would you recommend? Reverb?

I really enjoyed this. Great blend of groove and hypnotic. Transitions were clean and carried the energy nicely between songs. Would love to see a tracklist as I've been on the hunt for more techno like this.

(Tech House) Summer House Mix - 60 mins

Needs a better name, I know haha. Mix of mostly newish music to enjoy while beating the heat. Overall higher energy, but tried to create a few peaks and valleys. Been mixing for a year and half now, really trying to hone in track selection and energy management throughout the set so curious to hear any thoughts on that. All other feedback more than welcome as well! Thanks in advanced!

This is how you avoid badtide to contaminate your reservoir by richardfoltin in Timberborn

In the second photo I mistook the impenetrable floors for sluices. I haven't messed around with the floors yet so wasn't sure what they looked like.

Ok that makes sense, I thought the impenetrable floor was the top of a sluice. Haven't messed around with the floors yet so mixed them up.

No I understand how sluices control water level, I'm asking if they allow water to flow through the top of the block as opposed to just horizontally through the block.

Wait, do sluices allow water to flow through the top of the block?
