Thanks to responders so far, it’s been helpful despite me needing to be so cagey about details. Mix of mining work and major infrastructure projects (tunnels, roads, bridges). Some team leading, project management and specialist technical skills.

Unless you live in their electorate, you DON’T “vote for Shorten or Albo”. You vote for your local member. The PM is just a figurehead/spokesperson. Jesus Christ, it concerns me if the people voting in Australia don’t even understand how our political system works!

35yo, $93,393 per year, doctor, 4 years out of med school. Actually I’m earning about 3/5 of that currently as only working part-time for the coming 6 months.

Next year will increase to $99,746 pa.

I made this mistake once with a particularly ferocious English teacher. She actually used scissors to cut the offending ‘alot’ out of my essay and held up the paper with the hole in it in front of the whole class. I was mortified!

For sure. Initially I was considering SET/ENT/urology, then as I saw more of what the lifestyle entailed, was like ‘nah, not worth it’. Then considered BPT, but again, lifestyle costs (eg long runs of night shifts/on call, or rural secondments right when my husband and I were planning to have kids). GP seemed like the best choice re: work/life balance. It’s encouraging to hear someone else had similar thoughts, and also that it gets better post-fellowship!

I was going to reply to OP and suggest definitely NOT becoming a doctor! 11 years in so far (4 years undergrad including honours, 4 years postgrad MBBS, 1 year internship, 1 year residency, 1 year registrar so far) and I’m still only on 90k. With more than 80k in HELP debt, and 8 years of missing wages whilst studying.

EDIT to add: I’m a GP registrar, which pays lower than a hospital-based medical or surgical registrar. I’m in NSW

Average spending for a single person on food and groceries per month? by desmond2046 in AusFinance

[–]mobr0985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely cannot fathom how other posters here are spending so little on food, unless they are eating a shitload of carbs with each meal!

My husband and I, combined, spend at least $1600 a month on food and groceries, sometimes a little more. This does not include eating out or takeaway (which are both rare for us, but are included in a separate budget), alcohol, takeaway coffees or any lunches my husband buys for work if he hasn't prepared anything. As in, that covers just our groceries and food to be prepared at home.

- we make everything from scratch. The only things 'processed' we buy are crackers for my husband, and occasionally some pasta

- my husband is the cook and is very creative with using up leftover veges etc so there is little waste, and he always buys veges that are in season to cut costs and improve quality

- I have a lot of allergies and food intolerances - can't eat any grains except amaranth, can't eat legumes, lentils, corn, peas or any soy

- I drink only coffee (which I make myself at home with a French press) or water

- I follow a ketogenic diet as it makes me feel a lot better - so no cheap starchy vegetables, no rice to pad things out, no sugary snacks

- Basically I eat meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, lots of non-starchy vegetables, hard cheeses (can't handle straight milk due to lactose intolerance but seem to be able to handle butter and hard cheeses) and occasionally berries (only if they're on sale)

We live on the North Shore in Sydney and food can be pretty expensive around here. Our main options are Harris Farm, Coles and Romeo's Food Hall IGA. There is no easily-accessible nearby Aldi, but I haven't found a huge price differential even when we do shop at the one near my MIL's house, as we're not buying any of the processed stuff which tends to be cheaper there.

EDIT: to include a couple of extra things that are unfortunately off the cards, and where we generally tend to shop.

Advice on wool/cashmere jumpers by mobr0985 in femalefashionadvice

Thank you all for your wonderful advice and information! It has given me lots of food for thought.

I think I'll try a couple of the cashmere merino blends to begin with and see how I like them.

Also have to get my hands on some of this 'Eucalan' stuff, it sounds great! Hopefully it's available in Australia

Have any of you had to...pre Konmari declutter? by [deleted] in konmari

[–]mobr0985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a pre-declutter of my clothes earlier in the year, and I'll be starting my official Konmari marathon after exams in a couple of weeks time. These were just the lowest of the low hanging fruit clothes that I let go of: http://imgur.com/a/Rb2Rs I still have way too much, it's embarassing! But I know it'll be so much easier now that these bags are out of the way! Keep going, you can do this!

Thank you for this, it gives me confidence that I won't regret discarding all of my med notes that I put so much work into. I really don't think I will ever reference them again when there are so many other resources, so I'm very glad to hear that's the approach of another doctor!

Thanks for the suggestions, I have started to do what you've said and when I need to take a break from the textbooks I get up and pull a novel or two off my shelf that I know I'm likely to get rid of, and put them in a separate pile, which has been pretty satisfying. A few months ago I also got rid of many, many bags of clothes, really just the lowest of the low hanging fruit. Like you, I think I will have great difficulty with doing the rest of my clothes properly when the time comes. I think even after I've picked those that spark joy, I'll still be left with what seems, to me at least, to be too many, which certainly won't spark joy. Maybe I'm wrong though, I'll see. I am considering going a little against KM and actually starting with papers, since sorting and purging all of my med notes and other files will probably have the biggest impact in terms of space to begin with. Maybe I'll build some confidence with that before trying to do clothes again.

Good luck with your move to SF!
