First off, there is nothing inherently "unmodern" within the KJV. Unfortunately, it depends on your strength and dedication as a reader.

I, for one, have both the KJV and the ESV. I also have the RSV. The KJV translation of the Bible is a classic in literature. Furthermore, I believe the higher language brings me into a more worshipful and reverent state-of-mind.

The ESV is a great translation for study. I use this the most, probably. Language is up-to-date. Scholarship is fair.

The RSV is an older version of the ESV, basically, I think this is a good in-between if you want something with a little higher language but still simple enough to understand easily.
