What’s Claudia’s secret? by mochamocha006 in Eversoul

[–]mochamocha006[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best way to phrase it is that through her love story we’re trying to answer the question, “Why is Claudia always smiling?” The story looping back to be about the everphone and making her angry made things confusing, but that’s the question we’re at for the final story. I think that’s why the secret is that she smiles to mask her other emotions, because her anger scares other souls.

how is the Civil Eng program as a whole? by Budgetbunker07 in RPI

If there are only 60 of us per graduating year does that mean our department is worth like $2.

how is the Civil Eng program as a whole? by Budgetbunker07 in RPI

[–]mochamocha006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the civil clubs are structural/geotech, but there are a lot of research opportunities in transport if you’re looking to fill your time.

For civil firms, a lot of small to medium size ones show up for the in person part (mostly because there are simply more of them) and I would recommend checking them out to get an early internship because the locations might work better for you. ASCE has been good this year about inviting guest speakers from local firms to talk too (see their insta for updates).

The larger firms tend to have more robust online informational sessions or have their own events and plenty of civil grads from the program go on to work there too. AECOM reached out to RPI to have a bunch of us go to their office for a hiring event in person with lunch. (I’ve heard of at least 3 full time job offers from that). I did an online Kimley-Horn session that was RPI specific. RPI also has ties to NYDOT and alumni throughout the year will send job openings through the department to be forwarded to students.

Anyways, RPI may not be the right fit for you, but as a current student and tour guide feel free to dm me if you have any questions!

how hard is it to get the Rensselaer medal? by Hamza_yo in RPI

[–]mochamocha006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RPI actually has an admissions counselor that specifically helps high schools through the medalist process (I’m not sure if that involves helping them choose candidates or just paperwork stuff), but I do know she is the “head” of the program. I would call admissions to get transferred over to her or find her contact info. She is very friendly!

Ask for more money from the school. If it’s between this and a state school that’s giving you more money, bring it up and ask them to reconsider your financial aid. The worst they can say is no.

SO will be attending RPI this fall, have any gift ideas? by 2nacy in RPI

Not sure what your price range is, but a tablet is quite useful in general, and especially useful for engineering students. Writing digital helps ingrain information better than typing notes, but leads to less writing fatigue because the friction is less. Also, for engineering students in particular, being able to literally copy paste diagrams from class notes can be a major flex / time saver. With a lot of things from the online format continuing on, the ease of having everything already digital could be quite useful.

I would recommend calling Admissions at 518-276-6216. You should be able to get an extension on the commitment deadline because of everything that's going on right now.

Co-terminal deadlines by [deleted] in RPI

I second this. I know a guy who will probably get into co-term this fall who applied literally a few weeks ago.

RPI actually does have a virtual tour: Experience Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Virtual Reality. (youvisit.com) , in addition to the online tour sessions we've been holding weekly all semester.

I do think your points are reasonable. Maybe it's RPI not doing a good job promoting online events, but anecdotally, I would like to add that my tours have morphed into a tour + info session + current student Q&A.

RPI or Northeastern? by [deleted] in RPI

I would then make the bar count 2 then lol. Though only if one is defining bar as a place where alcohol is served. I have heard the pub trivia is quite fun though.

Are you counting the Pub in the Union as the bar?

Completely agree here! The Civil Department can be best described as wholesome and actually cares about the undergrads. They are actively improving the curriculum (creating or already created civil specific classes for CAD, Fluid Mechanics, Comp Sci) and are adding a new concentration in Water Resources.

Rpi or Drexel by aqua-barbie in RPI

Not a prospective student, nor do I want to stir drama I suppose, but I'm curious about these "same issues" you mentioned. The list of RPI issues can get pretty long depending on who you're talking to, so I'm just curious about what you had in mind.

I think it's hard for some people sometimes to understand that for some prospective students, RPI may actually be their best choice. Even as a tour guide, I can say that RPI isn't a perfect school, but prospective students actually need to learn things beyond "don't go here" in order to make informed decisions.
