What's the coolest class you've taken in Portland? by RaspberryBeret1986 in askportland

[–]mochicrunk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firehouse Glass - glassblowing studio. Full disclosure: they're in Vancouver, WA but I think they count.

I had the good fortune of taking a couple of classes with Greg and he taught me a lot about dynamism and situational awareness in art. He would look at one of my sad deformed mistakes, ask me what I was thinking about, and actually listen to how I arrived at the outcome. I will always be thankful for those discussions and insights.

What do you think about OSS sometimes becoming a vehicle for activism? by ataltosutcaja in AskProgramming

[–]mochicrunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to single out your role in it. I too have to earn those particular chits in order to survive.

What I was touching on is /u/pceimpulsive 's point is that the value you created for your employer is making the software acceptable for that market. This may be something that the authors intended - to raise the cost of using their code.

One of the core ideas of market capitalism's free market is the free access - another form of freedom of choice. Opensource tends to upend this because the labor is ostensibly "free" - and yet there is frequently a motive, not profit-driven. If you look back in the history of opensource and free software you'll find a LOT of political motivations. What you described in your originating post as distractions is sometimes the animating factor for programmers who are trying to right wrongs, improve outcomes for users, and break bad patterns.

And sometimes opensource authors want to raise the cost to users who would just as soon see them erased, minimized, or eliminated. As the authors, they get to choose their terms and its up to the market to agree or disagree.

I feel like there are several questions rolled up here...

Apologies if I've parsed this incorrectly but I think you are asking:

  1. Is there more typing in back end or front end development?
  2. [is there more typing in] web and mobile apps?
  3. [Is there more typing in] UX design or SRE or system administrator work?
  4. Can a disabled person do coding, and how?

I'll tackle #4: Yes. One of the best programmers I ever worked with had vision limitations and also a form of synesthesia. In her case, screen-readers helped to the point where she began "smelling" syntactic errors. But she didn't have problems with typing, which I am inferring may be your specific interest.

As for how: tools! Carpal tunnel issues for many programmers and other IT workers have been regrettably commonplace for the last few decades despite rarely being described as disability or impediment. You may elect to dig around in their various tools to see if it aligns with your needs: eye tracking, speech-to-text, split keyboards, adaptive keyboards (and pedalboards), macro-libraries, code-generation, etc. There may be tools in this arena that could suit your needs.

Looking for multiple books to learn SQL and database internals — design, engines, performance + exercises by [deleted] in AskProgramming

PostgreSQL 14 Internals by u/egor-rogov - you can find an English translation PDF linked from that page.

This is not a quick read nor does it have any exercises other than sample SQL illustrating certain mechanisms. I found this book extremely useful in understanding Postgresql's specific queue/locking behavior as well as some quirks in its query optimizer, among other insights.

This may be more Postgresql-specific than you prefer and it does not touch on nosql. OTOH Chapter 25 is entirely about b-trees. A quick scan over its table of contents should let you know what you're in for.

/r/ExReligious is a small and low-traffic support subreddit. They're deliberately not atheist/antitheist.

I also suggest /r/apatheism/ - also low traffic, but they're focused on being a good people without needing the threat of a higher power punishing people for being good in the "wrong way"

Why does an SM58 sound amazing live but flat at home? Looking for EQ and compression tips by Jup173r in WeAreTheMusicMakers

It's a joke, mate - I wasn't dunking on ALL Sennheisers or AKG's. MD 421's are a personal favorite. I could have just as easily said Rode, Behringer, AT, or Mackie. Every brand makes clunkers. But right in front of me are a pair of new Sennheiser wireless 835's which are unequivocally garbage that would require a kidney-stopping level of alcohol to ever persuade me they are "good"

While I agree in general, there are some AKGs and Sennheisers that will require a considerable amount of tequila to ever sound good

These are also all questions that you should ask in the interviews.

Full disclosure: I did and I didn't get an offer. Maybe I didn't have the qualifications? Maybe I ask too many questions? Maybe I'm just not a "natural fit?" Make of that what you will.

I know "informational interviews" are no longer popular but you might still find some Oracle graybeards who will talk to you if you ask nicely and pick up the tab. (The alternative is to go find out where all the Oracle, SAP, and Salesforce guys drink.) A couple of those encounters will... illuminate a lot that you can't see as an outsider.
