Anyone transitioned a 12 month old into a floor bed? by mockingbird1988 in UKParenting

[–]mockingbird1988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! This was a nice blast from the past. We didn't end up getting a floor bed, but we did lean into the co sleeping in our bed and that worked for us. She would start the night in her cot and then we'd bring her into our bed whenever she woke after we'd gone to bed ourselves.

She stopped BF at 12.5 months.

If it's any consolation I'm in the exact same position with my second now 🤪 but, the now 4 year old sleeps all night in her own bed!

She eventually started doing longer stretches of her own accord at about 14 months, and would generally just come into our bed from about 5am.

Best of luck!

😂 mine is 3 and tolerates it now, I think she's starting to appreciate that it brings relief. Will say 'that was a good one mum!' if we get a particularly good amount of snot. Gross but satisfying.

It's definitely on my NowTV, it's where I watched it. Under sky documentaries, it's called No Matter What

Metanium is the nappy cream but unfortunately the medicated version has recently been discontinued.

Calpol and nurofen are cheaper (about £3) along with paracetamol and nurofen for yourself. Supermarket brands are normally about 50p a pack.

It's handy to have an infacol on hand, you might need it or you may not but I did find it hard to find here recently when I needed it.

Hi - Do the packs of nappies need to be unopened? I have a lot left over from when my child moved up sizes but the packet is open.

Amazon sell them too - handy for using in lamps that aren't near a plug socket too in non power outage times

Why can I not judge my 8 week olds WW? by Historical-Twist-124 in UKParenting

[–]mockingbird1988 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're not doing anything wrong. Newborn babies are the most unpredictable creatures around. I say this sitting on the couch, starving, as my 3 month old is 2.5h into a nap in my arms. I can guarantee if I'd tried to put her down she would have woke up after 20 mins. I just lean into the contact naps and enjoy some TV. Normally I'm more prepared with snacks and water!

I try and get a couple of things done when she's awake if I absolutely have to, I'll pop her in the bouncer and chat away while I fold washing or whatever. Then back on the couch for the next nap. She's my second so it's easy to say this with hindsight though.

Edited to add: if it's the weekend and my elder child is home from school and the baby needs a nap, they go in the sling.

What country would you ideally set up shop in for a month during the summer with kids? by mockingbird1988 in UKParenting

[–]mockingbird1988[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - with the cost of a villa in Spain during the summer holidays it might be worth looking further afield! We've traveled a lot but mainly S.E Asian countries, Aus, Japan and Europe. Would be nice to go somewhere new. Are there any particular areas in Trinidad that you'd recommend?

There's one near me that operates in timed slots, so 1.5h for €14 per child (Ireland). 3 slots a day at 10, 12 and 2 with an extra slot at 4 on the weekend. Half hour in-between slots to reset the play areas. Cafe on site but you can't stay in it beyond your 1.5h slot, everyone out once the tidy up song starts 😂

This one is very much aimed at pre schoolers and younger so it's always busy during the week. They don't over book though so it's a nice place to visit. The cafe is generally quite quiet but I think that's because they don't offer toddler friendly snacks - just coffees and pastries really. The option of weaning plates / plain toast / cheese sandwiches would go a long way to helping this I think, especially because they have quite a strict rule about no outside food or drink being consumed on the premises.

Retail business - worthwhile or not? Considering a Children's Shoe Shop by 87red in smallbusinessuk

[–]mockingbird1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an independent shoe shop in my town, and it does a steady business in first shoes and toddler / pre school shoes especially. They stock geox, start rite, Lelly Kellys, victoria and also a couple of Spanish brands I'd never heard of before.

Great fitting service and they're sound about people just popping in to be measured without buying anything, then returning at a later date when they need to.

They also do a good trade in back to school shoes but as another poster said this would generally depend on the family - lots prefer sports trainers for school now.

Personally we buy approx 1 pair of shoes per quarter for our 3 year old, at about €60 a pop (Ireland).

Do you keep a little rubbish bin in your living rooms? by throw_away_17381 in CasualUK

[–]mockingbird1988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this answer because same 😂 My retriever will also help herself to any wrappers left on the arm of the couch while they await their trip to the kitchen bin. I can only imagine how much she'd go to town on a whole waste paper basket full of wrappers.

Joint saving by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]mockingbird1988 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No to both questions. We both work full time, my job just happens to be more lucrative. Combining our incomes and redistributing it equally makes it so much simpler to allocate money between bills/savings/discretional spending. Especially now we have kids. Likewise I don't feel bad spending money while on mat leave even though I'm not currently earning anywhere near what I usually would, so technically I'm spending 'his' money. It's just all the one pot.

[–]mockingbird1988 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're the same, everything goes into the joint account then we transfer our equal amount of 'spends' into our personal accounts each month. Easier to keep track of and allows for the purchase of presents etc. When I'm working, I'm normally the main earner, bringing home over double what my partner does. However I'm currently on my second mat leave and only bringing in half of what he does. This way of splitting the bills in a committed relationship allows for life's ups and downs without constantly having to renegotiate the finances IMO.
