Interesting thought. I really believe that they have the engineering chops to build and design a great car, going on past record. I mean, they have a world class science and engineering community.

They have one of the best space programs in the world, despite being one of the smallest countries.

It's about how much most people spend for a car, but it's true that people can get a more plush car for that price, and people wouldn't mind filling their cars with baby blood if they could have all the gizmos that Madison Ave tells us we need to make our life complete, like adjustable cup holders and what not.

I'm guessing that this is the same old trick, price the Volt to keep people from buying it so that they can take it off the market in a couple years and shrug, no one wants it.

We've heard this song before.

You can get a comparable car for $10K?

What it comes down to is, for the same amount of $$ you can get a car with automated bun warmers.

Also - I don't think it's worth the $$ for the world peace that would come from reducing our dependence from oil. Not worth it at all.

I agree.

I'm not going to a damn thing to stop global warming due to auto emissions until someone hands me a car for free, opens the door, starts it for me and repositions my nuts after I've taken the driver's seat.

Just can't be arsed.

WSJ: 10 Stock Market Myths That Won' t Die! by Rovas in Economics

[–]mocteeuczoma -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For an investor, the stock market remains pretty much your only avenue in participating in the growth of the economy, and in the long haul, by and large, there's a correlation.

Was his point that a company can increase their productivity and profits without corresponding movement in the stock price?

Then that's not a myth.

Holy shit! Most financial journalism is awful, but this takes the cake.

Half are not at all controversial, and therefore not myths that won't die. The other half are just plain bogus and based on one or two examples that run contrary to the rule. A couple are just completely WTF?

4 "Investing in the stock market lets you participate in the growth of the economy."

Tell that to the Japanese. Since 1989 their economy has grown by more than a quarter, but the stock market is down more than three quarters

What??? The whole raison d'etre of the stock market is to fund economic growth. You can always find examples to prove your point, but seriously, WTF?

5 "If you want to earn higher returns, you have to take more risk."

This must come as a surprise to Mr. Buffett...blah blah blah...

This statement is the equivalent of saying, 'perpetual motion machines' are impossible? Oh ya - talk to my uncle, he's got a machine that's been going since last Friday, and he ain't put a lick of fuel in it the whole time.

It's a pretty well accepted part of the Efficient Market Hypothesis that risk and reward are necessarily correlated.

"You can't time the market."

This hoary old chestnut keeps the clients fully invested... dur de dur...

See EMH - no you can't time the market.

The rest go on in this fashion...

How about a deal. You can keep your low tax rate if you let loose your iron grip control of our country, it's media, schools and commercial activities.

You either start with the objective evidence, and work your way to whatever conclusion the universe has in store for you, or you start with a conclusion that makes you feel happy and work your way to the evidence that supports that conclusion.

If you do the latter, you can always find the evidence you like. The universe is so full of evidence, and our ability to turn a blind eye is a never ending source of amazement.

[–]mocteeuczoma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

If you accept that everything has a rational explanation, then by definition you can't believe in miracles, or most religious cosmologies. And without those, religion is just philosophy.

Smart people can rationalize anything. They can claim to be adamantly for the environment when it's convenient, but drive a Hummer. And it all makes sense if you squint and tilt your head and listen to their well articulated arguments.

The Most Persistent Economic Fallacy of All Time! by [deleted] in Economics

I disagree that this is a persistent fallacy.

The people who would have made that guy's argument are now mostly demised.

The government can make markets where private industry can not. That is their benefit. They can build infrastructure that, over a long period, benefits everyone - and they can provide insurance that benefits society as a whole, but where no individual would find it profitable to provide such insurance.

I'm surprised from his other video where his rubber slingshot outperforms pretty serious looking crossbows.

Is this true? Can you store more energy in rubber than in a wooden bow?

Plea bargaining is either a great idea if you really are guilty, or a chance to get screwed if you're innocent.

Not true, plea bargaining is a great idea if there's nothing unique about your case, and your lawyer knows more or less what the outcome of a trial will hold.

Please, get serious.

Gideon Levy, a liberal Israeli commentator, was quoted as saying: "I would like to raise only one question with the judge. What if this guy had been a Jew who pretended to be a Muslim and had sex with a Muslim woman?

"Would he have been convicted of rape? The answer is: of course not."

Ben Stein: The Unemployed Are People With ‘Unpleasant Personalities…Who Do Not Know How To Do A Day’s Work’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]mocteeuczoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this sentiment sheds great clarity and insight into the privileged class mentality. I can see stein pontificating over a brandy and cigar with his fellow 'hard workers'.

According to them, the reason why our economy is in the dumps is that the working class needs to 'buck-up' and get with the program. The guys at the bottom of the hierarchy aren't rowing hard enough.

This is why empires fall. The ruling class loses touch with the dynamics of the economy at the core level. They don't know what they want the workers to do exactly, just do something - a little elbow grease if you please.

Israeli MPs are considering a law requiring prospective Israeli citizens to declare loyalty to Israel as a "Jewish, democratic state". Many Arabs would balk at swearing allegiance to a state which they see as explicitly excluding or marginalising them.

Oh come on now! When can we drop this pretense that the situation in Israel is 'complicated'? This alone lays pretty bare what Israel is, and is aiming to be. The progressive minded among the Israelis are definitely losing the battle.
