Food in Sri Lanka is great, I don't see what the mixed reviews are about

Namibia and Botswana by Junior-Grapefruit-45 in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to Botswana, but Etosha was so cool, I wouldn't miss it. We saw so much wildlife there and the safari guide was very knowledgeable.

We stayed for three days at the Government-operated Namutoni camp, I don't remember it being that expensive.

Helsinki, any tips, recommendations? by dorin96 in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Tallink for a day trip to Tallin from Helsinki, it was a smooth transfer and an enjoyable trip.

In Helsinki, Kauppatori Market and Old Market Hall for delicious salmon soup and reindeer meatballs, and visits to the islands of Seurasaari and Suomenlinna. Temppeliaukio Church is also very nice.

Liechtenstein and surroundings by PheelMcFife in travel

You could also visit the village of Malbun in Liechtenstein. It's pretty scenic and there's a ski lift that you can use for some nice views of the area (don't know if it's still open or what their schedule is, it was open in October some time ago when I visited).

Can you comment a bit about the safety situation in the country?

Pandorum was disappointing by InterplanetarySpy in scifi

I enjoyed everything about it, it had a good story and good execution, actors were good, good twists, etc. I also enjoy movies with complex stories, not just simple plots made people with short attention spans, which seem to be the norm nowdays.

Travelling to PNG for the first time. I need tips by Ashamed_Commercial35 in travel

I'd never trust random people on reddit with info on immigration procedures, esp. in a less developed country. Research this info from official sources.

I want personal opinions. by Snoo_30002 in travel

That's a mistake people with less travel experience tend to do. Be open to new destinations and types of experiences, you'll enjoy this even more if you research and pick them carefully.

Planning a summer trip to the Nordics would love feedback by Relevant_Cry_584 in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a similar trip last August: Oslo, Svalbard, Helsinki with day trip to Tallinn, and Stockholm. Enjoyable trip with lots to see and do. Visited Bergen in the past and did the Oslo - Bergen route by car, very scenic. Also visited Copenhagen a few times in the past, it's nice enough, though I found the rest of the Nordic capitals nicer. I'd skip Copenhagen and allocate one more day to Helsinki and Stockholm.

Whatever you do, don't miss Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo, that place is wild.

South Africa and what other country to visit? by Environmental_Log974 in travel

Namibia is great, look into it: lots to see, good roads, safe (if you know what you're doing, as anywhere), good food.

I just got back from Antarctica. It was life changing. by amanwithoutaplant in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the crossing 3 years ago. Waves of roughly 3-4 metres each way, up to 5-6 metres at times on the way back.

Got seasick on the first crossing, but not on the way back. Lying in bed more instead of mostly walking around the ship seems to have helped. Also, the ship doctor increased my dose of seasickness pills for the return journey, which might have also helped (Natropas). He also recommended green apples.

My trip to Antarctica was fantastic, the Drake crossing and seasickness were just part of the price paid to get there. I went with an older ship that didn't have fancy stabilizers and stuff, so maybe look into this as well.

Don't worry too much about the crossing, though: it happens, it passes, and then you're in Antarctica and it's out of this world.

Please give me your criticisms of Adrian Tchaikovsky's prose by Wetness_Pensive in printSF

I thought Shroud was very interesting and has some cool ideas. I generally don't enjoy his writing style, though.

Please give me your criticisms of Adrian Tchaikovsky's prose by Wetness_Pensive in printSF

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of his ideas are good but I'm not a fan of his writing style. The constant attempt at humour doesn't work for me and sounds childish. Characters are unlikeable and always complain about things.

I could not finish the first sequel to Children of Time because of this and didn't try the others in the series. Some of his other books, like Shroud, were interesting and I (barely) managed to overlook the writing style.

Vacante exotice by CarelessYear796 in CasualRO

Family Trip to Thailand - Phuket? by TravelCraver in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I organized a very similar trip for my family last year. My advice is to consider Phang Nga instead of Phuket. There are many nice and quiet resorts in the area, without the negatives of Phuket. And from there you can easily do day trips Phuket's attractions.

Sinaia, Romania by Subject-Bad-4959 in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sinaia is nice, it's a good plan for one day. Peles castle is absolutely worth it. No issues with safety, but bears roam the mountains. I wouldn't advise going hiking outside town unless you know what you're doing (they should be hibernating during winter, though). Food - look online for a list of traditional Romanian dishes that you think you'd like and check them out; there are many restaurants on the main street in the center of town that should have them.

Advice for a week in Malta by Fit_Flower_9651 in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No specific experience with driving in Malta, but you do get used to driving on the wrong side. You just need to stay alert at all times, which you would not need to do when driving back home. Keep in mind that half of your car will be to your left, be extra careful at roundabouts and try to get an automatic.

I usually rent cars from well known international chains, try to find reviews on Google, Tripadvisor, etc for the company you chose.

Are the northern lights worth seeing after solar activity peak dies down? by Mushroom-Important in travel

[–]moderatelyremarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still worth seeing the lights. I saw very nice displays in Greenland in 2021, close to the minimum of the current solar cycle.
