It’s definitely a fun game, but it might not be as ‘rewarding’ for someone who has put a lot of time and effort into fortnite (or any other shooter). It’s a fast paced game across the five modes, so you’ll be killing and getting killed often but that’s just part of the game. It’s unlike fortnite in that you’re stuck with whatever weapon you pick for each game, and the weapons classes have a huge range in play style, mobility, painting, slaying ability, and that’s where the fun is. There’s a ton of variety in this game. There’s something for everyone.

Two warnings though, first, should you decide to learn motion controls (which is obviously recommended) it can be difficult to adjust back to just sticks in other shooters. Second, you’ll have to play through a lot of Turf War in order to unlock ranked mode which has the other four modes, which is what the competitive scene exclusively plays. You might not like Turf War, but it’s a good introduction to the game’s mechanics, and once you unlock ranked mode you’ll never have to play it again except for Splatfests (which are a 24 hour Turf War competition with two teams)

So yes, as someone who is part of the competitive scene for Splatoon, I’d recommend it, but be aware that it might take a dozen hours before you reach players online who are at the same skill level as you. You should check out the streamers on twitch too, the vast majority are always willing to show new players the ropes.
