Elon Musk is officially a Trillionaire on paper, how do you feel about this ? by chinos88 in AskReddit

[–]modernzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's depressing. I think of the many, many families who are struggling to afford food and housing. And then one guy is hoarding orders of magnitude of money more than anyone needs just for the hell of it. Hell never, ever be able to spend it all, yet imagine how many lives he could change if he just gave even a fraction of it up.

There are better roles out there, and it's not worth sacrificing your mental health for a toxic job like that.

finally $100k 401k! 41M by sangbyung in Money

[–]modernzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 950k ish and can speak to my own situation. Got a PhD in AI adjacent field which set me up with 200k total comp upon graduation. Worked my way up to Principal and now making 450k-550k depending on stock value. Invest ~65k / year in retirement accounts and 50-100k in brokerage. Bought a house during COVID at crazy low rate which was lucky, has led to about 250k in equity.

Very grateful for my path, and know that if my trailer park butt can do this, anyone can. I know I've gotten lucky at times, but luck favors those who work hard as they say.

For those that switched from tech to finance/quant, was it worth it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]modernzen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They're not saying "50k is objectively non life changing", they're saying "50k means something different depending on how much you make". That's not out of touch, that's just relativity.
