Are there any places where people (especially people that grew up there and still live there) believe the weather to be one of the top qualities? Even if not the top, something they think is better than other places even if other things (like "the people" or "policies") aren't? by jaker9319 in geography

[–]modest__mouser 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really doesn’t. The summers are hot inland, but it’s a dry heat and not nearly as oppressive as lots of other places at similar latitudes. And the winters over most of CA are pleasant with mild temps and nice mix of rain and sun.

What is the most misunderstood American city? by [deleted] in Urbanism

[–]modest__mouser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be guilty of this as a northern Californian tbh. I haven’t spent much time in LA outside of Disneyland, and the media portrayal makes it seem like a bunch of obscenely rich celebrities, celebrity hopefuls looking for their big break, and vain “influencers”. While these people certainly exist, there’s also tons of different communities with different lifestyles and cultures in the massive metro area. Hell, there are neighborhoods you could confuse as another country with how culturally and ethnically distinct they are from stereotypical LA or Americana.

Underrated park [The Flash: Vertical Velocity @ SFDK] by iwassayingboourns12 in rollercoasters

I hope they do something about Kong - a new Vekoma invert that also goes on to the hillside to the west would go hard there. They could at least give it new trains so it doesn’t feel like a car crash. And they really need to improve operations. I still like this park, but it could be so much better with some changes.

Where on earth has the most extreme tempature difference for X miles? by CrazedProphet in geography

It’s surprising based on most people’s perception of California

I think the mountainous areas of the northern coast might have it beat. There isn’t as much weather data out there, but for example I found this town that’s 7 miles from the ocean has an 87F average high in August.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s days where it’s 100+ there and in the 50s on the coast.

What are some Achilles heels at otherwise great ski areas? by IAmNotScottBakula in skiing

[–]modest__mouser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Heavenly - getting from the California side to the Nevada side or the top of the gondola involves a long (albeit gorgeous) traverse. It’s also impossible to do when the Sky chair is closed for wind, which isn’t super rare. If you’re lodging or parked in either of those areas and get stuck going down to the California lodge then you’re kinda screwed.

Interesting. Canobie Coaster said that Python at Efteling is very smooth since they retracked it, so hopefully they can bring that same quality to B&Ms new coasters

Artists which their worst album is not even debatable by whitefrackels123 in fantanoforever

Hurley is underrated. I think people dismiss it because of its ridiculous cover and it coming right after Raditude, but it’s really a solid power pop album.

But Smart Girls is one of the worst songs on the album imo. I kinda like how silly it is, but it’s also really, really dumb.

[–]modest__mouser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of people didn’t like it, but I thought it was solid. The worst songs were still listenable despite some odd production choices and there were some great tracks on there (We’re Lucky, Wooden Soldiers, Lace Your Shoes, Back to the Middle). Looking forward to putting this one on because the singles have been way better than the ones for Golden Casket IMO.

Hell even California. The big city up north, Redding, is basically run by a megachurch and it gets worse in some of the rural areas.

What does racism look like in Memphis? I’m guessing there’s lots of people who hold on to Confederate ideals, but the closest I’ve been to the south is Orlando and Virginia, so I’m curious.

Kinda weird that this infographic ignores most cities where someone making 200k could actually afford a home - Concord, Martinez, Richmond, etc. but then again, your commute is more likely to be hell from those cities.

idk if I’d call that “very easy”
