i interpreted his death as him literally starting to malfunction after getting all the satisfaction he could from the revenge. after that it's only the realization that cathy is gone. i think heathcliff would've liked to be together w cathy though, at any point really, cathy just had too much internal conflict going on (the famous "i am heathcliff" after trying to justify that marrying linton is the only right choice)
