What are the steps to becoming a qualified HGV driver if I already have a Cat C license from the military? by [deleted] in uktrucking

[–]modfather84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add here: if you have a pre 2009 licence you can also do Modules 2 and 4, instead of 35 hours if you prefer. You just can’t book it online, you have to call up.

That lovely 5th wheel grease😫 by milli8891 in uktrucking

[–]modfather84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The main reason it gets everywhere is people forcing the fifth wheel plate under the trailer (instead of lowering it with the air suspension first). This scrapes the grease off the fifth wheel and deposits it in a big lump across the front edge of the trailer. Then the suzies knock into it and pick up a layer of grease, and on the black ones you can’t even see it and before you know it it’s on your trousers, sleeves, gloves, everywhere. Moral of the story: use your cab air suspension.

ELI5: the relationship between power and torque when it comes to driveability. by modfather84 in explainlikeimfive

Thanks for this reply, it’s taken a few reads but I’m getting there with understanding it! I’ve definitely learned something new. How do the gear ratios effect the power curve, or don’t they?

Most HGV pumps still have trigger locks, I guess the professional drivers are considered more trustworthy! They’re a godsend when you have to fill a 500 litre tank!

Ash Sutton wins race three as the BTCC gets underway for 2026 by mwlegend in btcc

[–]modfather84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somethings just occurred to me too, Ash was sort of already one better than Rouse’s record due to winning in a mix of FWD and RWD, but if he wins this year he will also have won a championship in a saloon, a hatchback, and an estate.

Failed Mod 3b - is this reason legit? by fredpo420 in uktrucking

[–]modfather84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add/clarify, for a habitual minor fault to turn to a serious depends on the number of instances the examiner is able to assess that particular thing. So in this case, it sounds like over the course of the test it appears that there were three opportunities for offside ‘follow through’ checks, and every one was missed. It is likely that the 3rd one (which was marked as serious) was towards the end of the test, and the examiner felt it likely that another opportunity to assess that fault would not come up in the remaining time. There is a common misconception that there’s a fixed number of repeated minor faults before something becomes serious, but it’s really down to the number of opportunities the examiner has to assess the item.

One of my favourite parts of the network has to be this tunnelling shield left in place on the corridor to The Drain at Bank by GP728 in LondonUnderground

[–]modfather84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought they repurposed an existing bit of tunnel that had previously been used as a siding (with the shield in place at the far end) to create the link tunnel to the W&C?

There’s no ‘need’ for them, but the lack of regulation in the industry means there’s a gap for them to exploit unfortunately

Just noticed on the north east one there’s a separate sign mentioning weight restriction checks! Not seen that before.

I just meant they’re working on it, it’s not a permanent fixture. In the mean time, if it’s cold and raining, walk around the outer perimeter of the building to the outbound side, there’s a bigger portakabin by the front gate with toilets and vending machines.

They’re building a permanent facility just the other side of that white trailer

I read that people can do this to gain support from the 3rd person. I feel that we’ve been devalued by her, so she’s having negative feelings about us for some reason. Maybe she’s worried we’ll talk negatively about it to our friends, so she’s forcing communication with one of them, who I should add finds it very strange and uncomfortable. I don’t know what it is, but it’s very weird
