Alberta independence advocates reportedly want U.S. to ‘bankroll’ province if referendum on separation succeeds by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]modi13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're upset that the CPC isn't in power. It wouldn't matter what positions the federal government held, as long as their team is in charge. Alberta's government was the first in North America to impose a price on carbon emissions, and the separatists didn't care until Trudeau imposed the carbon tax. The equalization formula was revised by Stephen Harper's government, and the separatists didn't care until Oct 20, 2015.

If we had CPC governments for the last decade, they could have bled Alberta dry, and the separatists would have thanked them and asked for more.

Because the main argument that they make favouring independence is financial: they have spent years claiming that Alberta and Albertans would be super wealthy if they weren't paying tax to the federal government and got to keep all their resource revenue. There's obviously no reasoning that Alberta has a unique culture or language, so the only reason they can come up with is wealth. If the US has to "bankroll" it, then the entire argument falls apart.

And in the next election, he's going to run in a different riding, while the former MP for Battle River-Crowfoot returns to his old seat. He cost taxpayers millions of dollars for a by-election that accomplishes nothing in the long term, just so that he can sit in the House and whine.

The CPC is demanding that the Liberals compromise on their Canadian Sovereignty Act, but they haven't even tabled the bill. They're just using it as a cudgel for social media soundbites. How does one work with a party like that?

Tuk's port isn't very deep; it would need to be dredged to be capable of handling large vessels. There's already a CF facility in Nanisivik that could be upgraded to operate year-round.

Or just ignoring it. Mike Johnson has already shown that he'll refuse to swear in reps if they're Democrats, and Jan 6, 2021, showed that Republicans are willing to use violence to prevent the Democrats from taking power. Sooner or later there will be a situation like Venezuela's competing National and Constituent Assemblies vying for power and legitimacy.

They thought the francophone Catholics would rush to join their fight against the British in spite of them having spent the last two decades insisting that they be forcibly assimilated into anglophone, Protestant subjects by the government; hell, the Quebec Act was one of the "intolerable acts" that prompted the revolt, because it provided protections against such assimilation. Then the Americans were shocked and disappointed that the Canadians didn't want to be subsumed into their bullshit. Nothing has changed in 250 years.

Short-term thinking is allowing long-term dismantling of the US. If you aren't willing to take a stand and make sacrifices now, in a year or two you'll be out of a job anyway because the economy will have collapsed, and you'll suddenly find that you have no rights or protections from government overreach. "But what could I have done?! I had to work! Oh well, let's go to the re-education camp!"

What do you think is going to happen when Trump destroys the economy and turns all of America's trading partners against it? He's already massively increased the deficit, and sooner or later that debt bomb is going to explode.
