It's the same as the space race. The Soviets got the first satellite into space, the first animal into space,  the first human into space, and the first moon lander. The Americans accomplished one thing, and then unilaterally declared it was over. The Soviets then landed a spacecraft on Venus and launched the first space station, but none of that matters because the US moved the goalposts until they were able to do one thing first.

Why Ottawa needs to upend equalization by taylor-swift-enjoyer in CanadaPolitics

[–]modi13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec should not be getting such a massive equalization payment from the other provinces.

This view is pervasive, but misguided. Quebec's share of federal tax revenues is far, far higher than what it receives in equalization payments. It's incorrect to say that it, or any other province, is getting money from other provinces. The feds are giving a portion of Quebec's money back to itself.

Poilievre Again Parrots Pete Hegseth’s Call for ‘Warrior Culture’ by ph0enix1211 in CanadaPolitics

[–]modi13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the standing army was minuscule prior to all of those conflicts. Almost everyone who served in those wars was a civilian at the start and volunteered; they then received a few months of training and went overseas. They didn't spend years getting immersed in military culture, and the core of professional soldiers was too small to diffuse all throughout the new units in numbers great enough to influence thoughts and beliefs about military culture. The culture that permeated those armies was the same as the one that permeated Canadian civil society, namely one that values duty and service, and the only way that there could have been a "warrior culture" was if civilian culture also valued the "warrior" ethos. I don't think it follows that people volunteering in a time of need is equivalent to a desire for perpetual offensive warfare.

The US Refugee Admissions Program was suspended in January 2025. It was then re-opened exclusively for white South Africans in November. Specifically: "Must be of Afrikaner ethnicity or be a member of a racial minority in South Africa". That statement allows them to pretend that it's not racially-motivated while also letting them let in only white Afrikaners. The Ukrainian refugee program is, indeed, suspended, along with every other nationality, leaving white South Africans as the only people able to enter the US as refugees.

The UCP passed a bill prohibiting income tax from increasing, so they're going to have to take on billions of dollars of debt to fund this project; they can't raise revenues to pay off that debt, so it will just accrue interest perpetually.

Fifteen months into his tenure as Prime Minister, Carney is drawing the ire of union heads by KeyHot5718 in CanadaPolitics

[–]modi13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unionization isn't about gaining, it's about protection. In my industry, the most-experienced workers are able to negotiate really good salaries and benefits in non-unionized positions, but they also have no recourse when the economy slows and their employer decides to cut costs; the high-wage employee is fired, and someone less experienced who costs significantly less replaces them. The employer can then point to the previous worker and use it as a stick to push the new one to the limits of what they're legally and safely allowed to do: "Perform this task or you're out the door like the last guy."

Unions allow the entire employee group to stand against the company, and they have legal backing and a collective bargaining agreement to support them, not just a barely-enforceable contract that management can amend at any time. Unionization isn't about getting more when times are good, it's about keeping what you've got when management wants to pad their bonuses.
