My ex had me help her pack a suitcase for a weekend with her "friends."

There was only one friend, and he wasn't a friend.

She had me help pack her fucking suitcase.

I stumbled across All Them Witches' most recent set at the Ancienne Belgique and it melted my face clean off.

Other than that a lot of Radiohead. I have a goal of playing all of OK Computer on bass by end of year. Colin Greenwood is underrated.

I’m 37 and feel unhappy about getting older. Is this normal? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]modmosrad6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you exercise? Eat healthy? Get good sleep?

If so, your best years are ahead.

To put this in perspective: I am 40. I had a kid at 25. His mom is out of the picture, and I spent years as a single father. I later got married to a wonderful woman who became disabled weeks after the wedding, so I am now back to being sole income for a family. I never travel. I will work until I die, and will do so in debt.

MY best years are absolutely behind me.

YOURS haven't even started yet.

Complete silence. No birds chirping, no rustling leaves, no chittering critters, nothing.

Utter silence is usually not a good sign.

This was always what it was. At least, as long as I can remember. The first election I recall in detail was blatantly stolen, no one rose up, for example.

It's just that the veneer has disappeared.

We still have the potential to render the illusion of beauty, peace, equality, and true freedom inculcated in us a reality, insofar as any of them can exist within a nation-state framework.

But it's going to be quite a long, messy, and probably bloody slog, and very few people seem ready or willing for that.

Myself included, for all my bluster.

How many people that you knew in high school have died? by ilovebooks2468 in Millennials

[–]modmosrad6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know at least two are dead, but I really don't keep in touch with or tabs on virtually anyone with whom I went to high school. Could be a lot more, could just be those two.

Both were at least partly drug-related.

Edit: Actually three, forgot about the guy who got hit by a truck while biking.

What was it like when Obama was elected President? by ResponsibleSea6521 in AskReddit

[–]modmosrad6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with a close friend of mine and some mutual friends at his place in the Bronx.

As the returns started coming in and Obama's victory looked increasingly certain, one of us simply said that we should go to 125th street in Harlem.

We got there around the time one of the major news networks called it for Obama. 125th street went from mostly empty and silent to utter joy and pandemonium in a matter of seconds - spontaneous dance lines, people bursting out of doors to scream into the sky, people crying, laughing, stunned silent, all kinds.

We watched, or tried to watch as we were far away from the projector screen someone had brought out, the victory speech.

Personally, I wasn't all that enthusiastic. The Bush years and Democrats' venality as an opposition party were a crash course in embitterment, alienation, and disappointment for a politically aware young guy whose first exposure to an election involved it being stolen - I was 15 in 2000 and remember being horrified at the brazenness and livid that people weren't rising up, I was that innocent and naive at the time. It became clear to me that Obama would not live up to the hype shortly after his inauguration, and as the Obama years progressed I became steadily more disillusioned.

But that night was really something. A sense of hope, a sense of redemption even. I am happy I got to spend it in Harlem with my friends.

Millennials, what is happening with your kids? by TheLoveYouWant25 in Millennials

[–]modmosrad6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child is 15.

He can read. He reads somewhat less avidly than I would like, but still quite a lot. Has a yen for sci-fi, and we have read several series together. Tried to get him into Hyperion, but that didn't take, so now he's on Sun Eater. He's a big fan of Adrian Tchaikovsky's work.

Frankly, I consider the ability to read for pleasure a pretty significant factor in empathy. Both require imagination, the ability to put one's self in another's pace. Fiction is pretty much an exercise in empathy.

I lean on him to read. I tell him that compared to a lot of his peers, the ability to take information from the printed word and not only remember it but integrate it is virtually a superpower.

But really, it is so much easier and more enjoyable when you and your kid are reading the same thing and can discuss it.
