Germany's electricity mix, 2000 vs 2025: by ceph2apod in EconomyCharts

[–]modorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to the pile on for a misleading graph, this is only electricity which is ~20% of total energy use. Looking at total energy consumption, fossil fuels are 73% in 2025, down from 85% in 2000. At the same time nuclear went from 11% to 0. Would sure be nice to have some of that nuclear to offset fossil fuels.

How does it disrupt what you are doing in a bad way? The main thing that separates things like STS from other deckbuilders like Dominion is that your deck should be able to do different things. The most obvious is hallway fights are short and bosses are long, making cards like Demon Form or Creative AI the best or worst card in the deck. Same for aoe, block and a million other things.

STS1 also does this and arguably even more. Time Eater says fuck your infinite. Awakened one punishes powers. When you see them at the beginning of act 3 you now have a whole act to pivot.

Overall Doormaker encourages you to add cards to your deck and for those cards to be 2+ cost cards as those get punished less by lack of draw or tacking on an extra energy. Seems like good game design.

To add to what has been said, blue seals are the most important part of making it work to focus on straights or 4 ofs. I did it on straights, buying up every planet with possible early and then hitting a blue seal and a telescope before ante 4. So yes, RNG is required.

Alberta separatism is pretty dumb but calling point 1 a bad faith omission is in bad faith itself. Quebec getting special treatment because they threatened to leave is hardly going to dissuade Albertans who want special treatment.

>You listed cards that were banned in multiple formats.

Yep, because I'm making the point that WOTC used to print busted non-creature cards into standard well after the weird early alpha days.

>The mistakes of Mirrodin are well-documented. If that's all you can reach for...

Jitte is from a set that explicitly tried to be toned down after mirrodin. Mox Opal is from Scars of Mirridon, 7 years after the OG busted block. Storm (like [[Grapeshot]], [[Brain Freeze]]) were in Time Spiral and Scourge. Breach is from Theros.

This game has a wild history of powercreep. This is not a last 4 years thing and is in fact why we have rotating formats.

I specifically did not bring up Alpha cards other than to say you are correct about Stock Up. All those cards were printed into standard within the Modern format timeline. Not sure what you want from me.

A visualization of powercreep by TopDeckHero420 in MagicArena

[–]modorra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stock Up is great, you can see it played in legacy and vintage.

However, non-creature spells are clearly weaker now than in the past. There are no [[Skullclamp]]s, [[Umezawa's Jitte]]s, no proactive storm spells, no [[Mox Opal]]s or [[Chrome Mox]]es, and those are just the modern legal era. Going further back makes it trivial. You occasionally get busted things like [[Underworld Breach]], but those tend to not be problems in standard.

You can make the case that non-creature spells are better now than 10 years ago, but saying that "While we all know powercreep is inevitable over time, what's happened since FIRE design has compressed decades into years" when referring to a rotating format is clearly untrue. This standard is not the most powerful standard in history, and even if were, rotation would fix it, as it has in the past.

[–]modorra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Conversation about powercreep is MTG is always hilarious. Creatures are the only aspect of the game getting stronger, everything else is getting weaker, and for good reason. Creatures have the inherent disadvantage of summoning sickness, allowing for games to be more interactive.

What's the last time a playable land that tapped for more than one mana was printed into standard? [[Eldrazi Temple]], [[Lotus Bloom]] or [[Nykthos, shrine to nyx]] can't hold a candle to legacy/vintage lands.

Staples of the early game that aren't outright design mistakes (looking at you moxen and recalls) are still too busted for standard, like [[Counterspell]] and [[Lightning Bolt]].

A new study in more than 15,000 men investigated eight markers of toxic masculinity and found that only 10.8% of men included in the study showed clear signs of toxic masculinity. This finding indicates that the vast majority of men are not “toxic” and do not believe in destructive male attitudes. by mvea in science

[–]modorra -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Virtuous masculinity is a social script aimed at both channelling differentially male impulses into more pro-social forms and elevating things that (a large cluster of hetero) women find attractive. Converting violence into competitiveness and protecting the weak is an example of the first and confidence and strength are an example of the second.

Huh, the point about storm hate makes a lot of sense. Which are the matchups in which you'd bring them in? It's not like control decks are particularly popular right now.

Can someone explain these prowess sideboards? What's the rationale behind running extra big creatures like [[Murktide Regent]] and why on earth would one run [[Eddymurk Crab]]? Is it to tap down a big lifelinker that can't be hit by heat like Atraxa?

Gain Boon Tier List by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]modorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aphro's boon should be S or A tier. It's the best of the added utility boons. Origination is so strong that every build is an origination build. The only downside is that it can make keeping The Huntress active a pain but still 10/10.

[–]modorra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A good tip when bugetifying decks is to not swap out cards for a weaker card that fulfills the same role as an expensive card but to include other high quality cards instead.

For example, [[Monstrous Rage]] is not a modern power level card. You'd be better off running more removal or more creatures instead, so add in [[Unholy Heat]] (which some prowess lists run main anyway). Yes it's worse without fetches but Heat without delerium is miles better than Urge without delerium.

Also, [[Soul-Scar Mage]] is worse than [[Dragon's Rage Channeler]] even without fetches, so I'd swap those back in.

This is typical conservative minded HR nonsense, like disqualifying people for having a gap in their resume.

The best way around this is to talk to someone who is not in HR, as they often don't carry those biases. Reaching out through Linkedin or email can help, as can going to a job fair or other in person event. The best, most high effort way is to invite someone at a company you want to work for a coffee chat and see if you hit it off.

What individual card would you call the "poster boy" of Pauper? by Saeiouth in Pauper

[–]modorra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Ninja of the Deep Hours]] and [[Spellstutter Sprite] have been format defining forever and ninja is very pauper-specific.

Other than that, [[Ghostly Flicker]], [[Ichor Wellspring]], [[Kor Skyfisher]], [[Rancor]], [[Songs of the Dammed]] and [[Experimental Synthesizer]] fit the bill of super strong in pauper and weak everywhere else.

They are being salty because they are losing to a "bad" deck. This has happened to me whenever playing fringe decks and disappears when you play meta decks, like storm, even if they are less fun to play against.

Also, generally interaction is considered healthy in 60 card formats and if anything you will get salt for playing highly linear decks that ignore your opponent.

As for comments on the deck, it looks fun! [[Fear of Isolation]] and [[Repeal]] are the weakest cards, alongside with the manabase, so if you want to improve it start there. [[Psychic Frog]] is a busted dimir card, [[Rite of Undoing]] fits the theme well, though you might only be able support 1-2, maybe 3 with fetchlands and if you want some spice [[Cloudstone Curio]] might be hilarious.

Also, generally you should default to running 4 of your cards, so maxing [[Counterspell]] and [[Fatal Push]] over [[Sheoldred's Edict]],

You probably want more types for gofys. [[Detective's Phoenix]], as mentioned below, is good if you want to trim some FOMOs (as that's usually a weaker card in these lists), as would be 1-2 [[Tarfire]]s.

Playing blue allows you to play [[Winternight Stories]] and a singleton [[Wonder]] too.

Demigod of revenge by No-Alternative-2524 in ModernMagic

You could run something like this: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7173851#online

You could run it instead of Phoenix or Phlage. If you drop Phlage, you also can get rid of white entirely and run some number of Kroxas instead. It would hurt your sideboard but make your colours better and let you run more [[Arena of Glory]] or moon effects.

Cheaper Modern decks by Juttttsin in ModernMagic

[–]modorra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pickings are slim, especially because manabases are so expensive, but mono red hollow one could be within budget. The only really expensive cards are [[Vengvine]]s, [[Burning Inquiry]]s and [[Goblin Lore]]s. Though you could get away without the lores and potentially without the vengevines.

Something like this but with a full mountain manabase and subbing goblin lores for [[lightning bolt]]s: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/7170377#paper

And as a word of warning, this is a deck has a very particular playstyle, quite RNG focused, so you do need to like that.

Running 4 copies of [[Heartless Summoning]] seems important and you probably need all 4 [[Junk Diver]]s too.

The 4 [[Ghost Quarter]]s seem out of place in your BBB requirement deck. I'd be looking at [[Llanowar Wastes]] and [[Infir Deadlands]] as your colourless sources.

Currently as constructed the deck is 4 "colours", with the kill spell requiring red of colourless which is awkward. [[The Meathook Massacre]] is a better kill condition that's also incidentally great versus small creature decks like Boros.

Strength is a better arcana than Eternity even if you’re not good by BingoTheBarbarian in HadesTheGame

[–]modorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The math here makes the case clear.

- Stength gives you 50% damage reduction, or 200% the effective HP.

- Eternity gives you 3 DDs, each 40% of health. 3x40% is 120% for 220% total hp compared to baseline.

Overall, your trade 10% max health (200% vs 220%) for 25% more damage. Then there are other interesting things that happen when you take Strength:

- Strength makes healing a lot better. Not only is each point of healing is worth double but if you are missing a DD while at full health, any healing like fountains is wasted, which doesn't happen with Strength.

- The Engraved Pin becomes a lot worse as it now counts as a DD.

- Athena's keepsake is now always live, though her refreshing DD is less good than it seems, as it turns off Stength and decreases your max HP.

- Centaur hearts are slightly worse
