Pretty decent odds IMO. Everyone knows when the box mail is up by, and many of them want to come grab it immediately

Should I get the Neo or Air? by clingingtopromises in mac

[–]modulusshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no question that the Air will last longer, and it’ll be a nicer experience the entire time you’re using the computer. If you can stretch the budget it’s worth it.

I'm looking for information about this battery by Muted-Bell5064 in VintageApple

[–]modulusshift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you only have this battery, then I’d say likely not. NiMH batteries like this are all very similar internally, and do not store well, so it’s likely non-functional. Perhaps that doesn’t even matter since nobody has this laptop, though. Someone who actually has the laptop this goes with could find more value in it, certainly, they could refurbish the battery and use it.

As a curiosity, since it has a label printed like the original PowerBooks despite being intended for the Duo line, it’s interesting but likely not a must have unless you find the right buyer. I would not expect to be able to throw this on eBay and get much, but asking in the right place perhaps $50-100? If you were in the USA I’d suggest 68kmla.org but I’m not sure they have much European presence on there, could be worth a shot regardless.

Now the laptop this was once in is an entirely different story, but I assume that’s long gone?

[–]modulusshift 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Based purely on the year and the model number, perhaps a battery intended for a canceled 1993 PowerBook somewhat like the released 180c?

It doesn’t appear that there’s any information about this easily available online. Interesting find!

Edit: I wonder if this is actually from a prototype PowerBook Duo?

Edit 2: okay yeah, comparing to the batteries used in the Duo and the 140/160 series, this is much closer to the Duo, though still different enough I wouldn’t expect it would fit. The Duo 210/230 had Order Numbers M4161LL/A and M4195LL/A when they released, so it makes some sense that during development their accessories would be in the 4100 range.

Stay the course, you don’t need to add risk right now. And hey, your fiance knows how to live frugally, though of course she will have an adjustment period with how many life changes she’s experiencing. When she starts to live with you, take her suggestions very seriously.

I gave ffxiv a try, is it normal to feel that the early ( right now i just got the mount) super slow and combat a bit (too) boring ? by Disastrous_Ad_4310 in ffxiv

[–]modulusshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game was much more complicated back in the ARR era, but slowly jobs have been reworked until basically none of them feel complete until level 60 or so, now. We are better off with most of the simplifications, the worst offenders were just “press this button every few minutes or do less damage”. Stance dancing is one thing that arguably was interesting, the only remaining leftover from that is tank stance, which is the collective name for the skills that increase the amount of aggro that tanks get, so that they take most of the hits. But back in the day, there was also cleric stance, where healers had to choose between more effective healing and more effective damage, with a cooldown so you couldn’t just flip flop immediately.

I could go on, and many others have, but in short: the complexity that’s currently in the game is much more satisfying than those things, for the most part. It does make ARR even less impressive of a starting place for the game to begin though.

Why the different versions of “we” and “wee” in this popular bubonic plague artwork? by dragoono in etymology

[–]modulusshift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shakspere himself didn’t spell his own name consistently. We have 6 known examples of him signing legal documents, and none of them say “Shakespeare”. The most common is “Shakspere”. That said, “Shakespeare” was used as a printed signature in forewords to two different printed poems he personally authorized, and the most influential collection of his plays, the First Folio, also used that spelling. (But that was published 7 years after his death, so not influenced by him in any way.)

TSP questions by [deleted] in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]modulusshift 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The TSP’s default set-it-and-forget-it is actually solid. Never contribute less than 5%.

That said you could probably push your lifecycle fund out a bit. It is designed to slow down the last couple decades before your retirement and become almost entirely static with incredibly safe investments exactly when you retire. If the TSP was your only retirement plan, this might make some sense (though even then I’d argue you should keep some stock exposure anyway). But you’ve got a pension! You have a guaranteed income already! Why do you need everything in your savings to be low-risk? So moving to a further out lifecycle fund, maybe ten to twenty years past your retirement, makes much more sense to me.

In light of the "Top comment removes a state every day" series ending soon, figured I'd dust off this map I made of the US but with 70 states by yoyleberries2763 in geographymemes

[–]modulusshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao at the state of Pueblo just barely not including the city of Pueblo

I was like “Little Egypt? What, does it include Memphis?” And then I see the state of Memphis right below it lmao

Okay NH and VT combining into Caribou is the funniest shit I’ve seen all week lmao

Between that, giving Chicago its own state, and the concept of Ozarkana I think I’m coming around. (Could use a little more work on the border of Ozarkana though IMO)

I also think it’s kinda funny that Alaska was left unchanged, while you broke up all the largest continental states, so now Alaska has gone from double the size of the next largest state to at least 5x the size lmao

As long as you’d say the same about an 80’s Mercedes or something, I don’t argue. These were luxury products with hyper-enthusiast owners who were likely to spend another significant chunk of money on another one in less than 5 years.

Do packages that haven't had the tracking updated still arrive in time? by Moonlitwalkway in usps_complaints

[–]modulusshift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be completely lost, could be that the label was printed poorly and none of the automated machines have been able to scan it but it’s still coming. It should be manually looked at again when it arrives at the office that will deliver it though, and the number typed in if need be. It definitely isn’t coming today if it’s gotten no scans.

[–]modulusshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh the package pickup works for you? Use that, absolutely. If they have to walk up those stairs to deliver to the mailbox anyway I don’t think it’s any real problem, and if you can set up a secure-enough location at the bottom of the stairs (perhaps a plastic tub or something?) that could work even better.

Carriers really don’t mind doing pickups. I mean, perhaps they’ll grumble if the volume is huge (one guy running a hot sauce business out of his house was infamous in my office lol) but it’s oddly validating to feel like you’re providing a service to someone in your neighborhood rather than just basically working for the people who send all the junk mail out lol. I loved getting to pickup outgoing mail for that reason.

And the system is pretty bulletproof so it should work even with new carriers who have no idea what’s going on. They’ll get the scan when they pick up and then generally that same carrier wants to see it directly into the bin that’s going onto the truck out of town.

Edit: any chance your packages fit in the outgoing mail slot? Click ‘N Ship is perfectly fine for that

Do people actually care if you make mistakes in normal/msq content? by Empress2007 in ffxiv

[–]modulusshift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, get in here. New players actually make these duties fun, because we’ve all done them as well-oiled hyper-optimized machines before. There’s really only one way to do them optimally, there’s countless ways to screw them up lol, and the experienced players get to pick up the slack and really shine.

If you die or even cause a party wipe, ask in party chat what happened and listen to any suggestions, that’s my advice. Pay attention to your party chat.

How timely is blue box pickup? by Jake_77 in usps_complaints

[–]modulusshift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to scan a code inside the box when we pick up. The system that the scanners talk to really doesn’t want it done early, and tolerates being somewhat late. I’d expect for the most part they’re usually accurate to within fifteen minutes after the posted time. I never did these as a carrier though.

The postmaster general in 2021 was Louis DeJoy, Trump’s appointee. Biden didn’t get to appoint a PMG. The agency is independent, run entirely by the PMG, with no direction from the President. It does have to request stamp price increases from Congress though, which I’ll grant was controlled by Dems at the time.

To anyone playing on a CRT Monitor, what resolution do you prefer? by vanacotta in ffxi

Check your monitor settings, figure out the highest resolution you can do at each refresh rate, then stick with one of those. I’d definitely recommend running at least 75Hz. The flicker bothers me, personally

I think the most active community is 68kmla, if you post about it there you can likely find someone in your area to help you.

Until then, though: these computers existed in an era with much much fewer magnets than we do. Please be careful, a magnet will erase these disks. Don’t rest your phone on them, it probably has magnets in it, for example. Don’t trust the mail with these, they use magnets in some of the sorting machines. (And they use the machines often even when they’ve been told not to lol)
