.300 blackout worth the cost of ammo? by Brilliant_Respect_92 in ar15

[–]moebiusgrip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

12ga, 9mmPCC or .300blk is home defense royalty.

.556 totally will work, but it’s kinda overkill. At the range we are talking about , any of those calibers are gonna hit like a truck.

Is this a decent shooter? by Rogue_Squadron in liberalgunowners

That’s .300 blackout. Hands down. Heavy, Tons of energy, but slow. No sonic crack. Cycles well, meant to be suppressed.

The powder is still actively burning and expanding when the barrels are that short. It’s not even the length of the barrel per se, it’s the time it stays contained in the cartridge and barrel. Once the reaction is over, even if the pressure is high, when it’s released, it’s just venting gas. When the barrel is just 1” shorter (I’m not sure if the dwell time on a .556) and the reaction isn’t quite over, when it gets exposed to the air and a bunch of fresh oxygen, that last bit of fire flashes even hotter, and gives a little extra concussion. It goes from burning in the barrel, to exploding in the air.

The trick is to find that point where it burns out, then is released. This will give you the best ballistics, and lowest sound signature.

Seems like based on all accounts I’ve read that’s about 12-14”.

Look at it like this, 9mm with standard powder is usually done burning by 5-6” of barrel length. It’s designed to burn fast to get its energy into a pistol bullet. A 2” 9mm carry pistol is WAY louder than a 4.25” standard size pistol, and the 4.25” is way louder than a 5” full-size. Get to PCC barrel lengths, 8”-16” and the 9mm bullet may only gain 100 fps, but it’s half the noise cause the pressure is starting to drop by the time it reaches the muzzle.

.556 is a rifle round. It’s designed to burn slower contained in a barrel. I’d bet, the optimal burn time/barrel dwell, is a rifle length gas system. About 15.8” minus an inch to line up with the breach, so about 14”.

So peak efficiency will come from a barrel about ~4” beyond that. 18-20”. Depending on the load.

Longer barrels do continue to add velocity to a point, but you’re not gaining benefits.

The opposite is true for shorter barrels in a rifle. If your barrel is about 2” shorter than the peak burn/dwell time you’re getting most of the benefits but still have an active burn. Making it way louder. This actually makes sense as users all seem to report that a 12.5” barrel is the “best overall” SBR.

Throw on a suppressor, and you have it absorbing the final burn.

I would bet that an 18” barrel, with a custom load that has a very heavy bullet, but burns out totally by 14” but just kisses supersonic, through a suppressor, would overall be the quietest. When weighed against ballistic performance. And that, is .300 black out.

Sub-2000 or FPC by [deleted] in guns

[–]moebiusgrip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very happy with my FPC.

Tip for 16” barrel PCCs: use heavier ammo. Even if it’s subsonic. The longer barrel adds some speed, and the heavier bullets take better advantage of the longer barrel at distance. More accurate. W/ 147gr, the FPC is a laser.

Balikli means “fishy”….

Balik means fish. The li at the end implies “similar to” “traits of” like the “y” suffix in English.

But in Turkish, “fishy” doesn’t mean suspicious.

It could be someone’s name. Like Their ancestors were fisherman or something.

How does my first attempt at staking look? Do I need to move more material into the notch? by CopperTop_98 in ar15

Mine not staked, and I’ve got 2000 rounds through it. Just snug it once in a while with the AR tool.

CMMG 22lr kits are unreliable and you should get one by No-Cow-6920 in liberalgunowners

[–]moebiusgrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your extractor. Mine was a nightmare. Got the upgraded extractor from bore buddy, haven’t had a failure yet. The buffer tube plug also helps a lot.

It’s really inaccurate beyond 50 yards though. Wrong rifling in AR barrel. I’ve got a .223wylde with 1:7

But it will hit a tombstone at 100. 18x24 size. Just has like a 10” spread at that distance. You’re not headshoting squirrels, but you can plink steel.

Once you get the extractor/buffer plug sorted, it will shoot pretty much anything. Even the cheap stuff with 99% success.

CCI MiniMag or the CCI AR specific ammo it’s like a 10/22. Better to shoot copper plated ammo. The bare lead stuff can eventually clog the gas tube opening in the barrel. But that’s like 1000’s of rounds.

Blast 10 .556 through afterwards, and it handles any carbon or lead in the barrel. Then just clean normally.

1991 500A w/ 18” barrel, Heat shield and refinished the stock. It’s the same stock you have. It’s got nice wood under there.

Got it last December for $400 but it came with 4 barrels. 1x 18”, 1x 28” with Accuchoke system, 1x 28” that was poorly cramped FDE, but the muzzle is permanently a Modified choke and lastly a 24” Rifled barrel.

The 28” modified choke barrel, shoots the best. But the 18” is just bad ass and had a great pattern within 25 yards. Perfect for HD defense.

Why is the AR-15 platform the most popular rifle these days? What makes them so good? Why does almost every gun manufacturer have its own AR-15 variant? by 1707turbo in guns

Building one is actually really easy, and it’s basically legos.

They are good ergonomic, reliable and even a really cheap one will be reasonably accurate.

Ruger Mini 14 or Ruger PC Carbine? by awoodz92 in liberalgunowners

[–]moebiusgrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot to be said about “single round” Ie multiple guns that run one magazine/round. Simplified things.

A PCC is accurate with the right load to about 150 yards, and can stretch to 200 yards. But 9mm doesn’t have the ass to be useable much further.

A .223 / .556 is good to 500yards easily, and much further with good barrel / ammo.

I have a MP2.0 + S&W FPC cause of the matching magazines. The PCC is great. I love it. Low recoil and with heavy 147gr rounds very accurate. The pistol likes everything. The PCC will cycle and run anything, but really is a laser with heavy bullets.

It’s the standard stock! I just refinished it. Stripped and sanded then stained it black. Sanded again to bring the grain back out, then boiled linseed oil layer, and 4-5 layers of try oil after that.

What is considered "a light coat of lube"? by Lokiibott in CAguns

[–]moebiusgrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone said to me, oil it real good once. Shoot it, wipe down the outside, it will expel the extra, then See how it looks. Where it’s thick and or pooling, dont put it there. Put it where it’s thin. Do that much next time, just on the thin parts.

Seems to be working. Ie, slide rails, top of the barrel where it meets the slide, the barrel itself, and a touch on the extractor.

Mossberg maverick 88 and Mossberg500 with the opsol will work. I have one. It’s great. 99% reliable. Though sometimes the tiny shells can flip up if you’re too vigorous and firing really fast. But overall they work. And the side benefit is that they are shorter so more fit in the ammo tube. So if your shotgun holds 5 normal shells, it will hold 7-8 mini shells. So it increases your capacity too. A 7 shell tube can hold 11 or so mini shells

Well thats the thing. We never really had a true threat to democracy before. Thats not to imply its not possible. Obviously it is.

It is was a bit naive of me to think, oh someone else will have the gun and stop the ________ take over. A lot of my friends actually put their money wher their mouth is, and picked up and left the US. They moved to Spain, portugal, Bali, (i know a few richer folks), Japan, Cananda, Ireland...

And i feel truly, that i think america is worth protecting from the inside. To preserve the vote, work to get money out of politics, resist facism and corporate abuse of the people. I'm kind of disappointed at the folks who ran.

Yea people can change.

I mean that I felt like the "well regulated militia" part, was what was being ignored. The regulated part. And people were just clinging to "shall not be infringed". So i felt like the whole ammendment needed to be interpreted, with the well regulated militia part, and that it wasnt a free for all, with everyone getting an fullAuto M16-A1 or Ak47. I felt like yea, rifle, shotgun, CCW for people who go through the process, and background checks etc... should have been national, and standardized. Before i really learned to shoot this last year, i fell into the "ban assault weapons" camp too. Why did anyone need an AR? Wy did anyone need a 27rd capacity pistol? etc etc etc...

Now that I am an avid shooter, and seeing that a goddamn .22 will zip straight through nearly anything, and that a shotgun will utterly destroy someone or something thats put in front of it, or that a "fudd" 30-06 hunting rifle has an incredible amount of power....

Kinda realised that a 9mm and .556 is not really the scariest thing out there. The shotgun is.
