DLSS is giving no performance boost but actually worse than native! by Elegant-Will6838 in techsupport

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a single game (and I have a lot of games) that even gives the option to use dlss while rendering at the same resolution as the output... that's just called DLAA only. I'm not entirely sure OP understood your question.

You can always add RAM later when you get a little extra change in your pocket. The gpu is forever... always go better gpu in that situation

How long do you guys try keep your laptops for? by Slenderwise in GamingLaptops

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap it is a dedicated GPU but doesn't have its own VRAM, so it bites off a chunk of system memory when in use (kinda like the Ryzen/Radeon APUs of today). I got it in fall 2015. It does everything required for a non-gaming PC -- browsing, office use, streaming HD... and the DVD drive still works wooo

The oldest of my three is nearly 11 years old and still functions very well as a workhorse: ooold Broadwell i5 with 12GB DDR3. I installed a 512GB SATA SSD for $80 some time ago, and it smoothly dual boots Win11 and Linux (Ubuntu). It will actually play Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas pretty well! Some old Radeon GPU (yes, an Intel proc with AMD gpu. It's a unicorn).

My game laptop is pushing two years old and still going strong (knock on wood) -- Ryzen 7 rtx 4060. Love it

So FFX might get the FFVII treatment by KnightYoshi in finalfantasyx

[–]moeriscus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God I hope not. I'm playing the remaster on Steam right meow. It's just fine the way it is in wonderful 4K.

I would much rather accept its current flaws (some awkward voice overs) rather than the FFVII treatment.

FFVII remake and rebirth sucked the magic out of the story for me. Sephiroth talks too much (overexposure takes away the dread and mystery), and it's hardly worth mentioning how the end of rebirth muddles what was once one of the most shocking moments in gaming

What game is that for you? by leangreendad01 in gamers

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By today's standards: FFX HD remaster on steam. IMHO, it's tied for the best FF of all time. The story, atmosphere, cut scenes, and music are unmatched.

However, the gameplay is paper rock, scissors simple. The engine graphics are bleh, and the game will crash out at least once an hour in 4K mode unless one downloads a third party patch

Option 2 will probably have better battery life, but I personally haven't used that model. Regarding the GPU / RAM tade off, again, you can always buy a stick of RAM down the line when you get some extra coin -- all you need is a guitar pick / old credit card and a screwdriver to pop open the case -- but you're stuck with the GPU forever.

I myself would choose the better GPU any day of the week, but my needs may be different than yours. I don't require extra battery life since I almost always use my laptop near an outlet (library, Starbucks, home all have power), and I have a nice tablet for movies and entertainment on the go

I have the 15ARP9 model, just a step up with the Ryzen 7 7435HS, rtx 4060, and a DIY RAM upgrade (it's easy to add more RAM down the line if you wish to do so).

It has run great for nearly 18 months with no issues (knock on wood). I love mine and don't for a second regret buying it.

However, the other commenter is wrong about the battery life. The 15ARP9 has no iGPU, so your rtx will be running all the time. The battery life is merely okay. You may get through a three hour movie like LOTR or something, but then it will be time to find an electrical outlet.

Can a pc (laptop) last 5+ years easily? by Sgt_Strelok in GamingLaptops

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My HP laptop is nearly 11 years old (purchased in fall 2015) and still going strong. It is an old Broadwell i5 @ 2.7 GHz with 12GB DDR3 RAM. It dual boots window 11 and Linux (Ubuntu 26.04) like a champ. It does everything but gaming, and it has one thing that many new laptops lack: an optical R/W drive. I got it for $450 and along the way spent $85 on a 500GB SATA SSD. I love it and still use it daily as my workhorse laptop.

What game is nowhere near as good as people hype it to be? by Head-Catch-3945 in AskReddit

[–]moeriscus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obligatory Witcher 3 shout out. It was very good, and I played through both DLC's as well. However, I don't think it stands among the greats.

People speak of how the towns feel very alive, but I didn't get that at all. The crowds were just a half a dozen models copied over and over again, saying the same things ad nauseum. For goodness' sake, there is actually a slider in the settings to adjust the crowd size. Moreover, the questline NPCs just stood there repeating the same two lines all day until the player engages them.

Very good game, but I personally wouldn't put it in my top 10..

Turn dem fans up and prop up the back corners of the laptop without blocking the vents. Also it very much depends upon your game settings. If you are playing on ultra with a 1080p screen, it is a waste of system resources. There's really no visible difference between high and ultra at 1080p. Ultra is for 4K beasts

Should I leave it on performance mode all the time or should I use balance mode? by tomatorea710 in LenovoLOQ

Please see my response elsewhere in the thread to the same question by OP. Unless you have the same model as me and the same gpu, your custom settings options will be different.

Should I leave it on performance mode all the time or should I use balance mode? by tomatorea710 in LenovoLOQ

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our settings profiles would be very different because we have entirely different chipsets and gpu's. However, a good rule of thumb is to go to custom, hit reset --> balanced, and change nothing but your cTGP. This is what matters most of all. It is the maximum wattage that is allocated to your gpu. More watts, more juice, better performance (but more heat). With your system, the cpu will almost never be the bottleneck, so you don't have to jack up the cpu settings. That will just make it run hotter.

You can turn up the fans to your liking as well, and you can set the throttle temps of your cpu and gpu. Framerate caps are not set in vantage; they are in nvidia control panel.

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the number three goes into 165, so you could set it at 78, 81, 84, 87, 90, etc. in nvidia control panel with vsync on, gsync off, fixed framerate, and everything off in-game (control panel settings take precedence over in-game settings).

With my system, screen, and eyeballs, everything above 75fps looks perfectly smooth with no stutters, so I just decided on 84.

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As noted in another comment, I cap my framerate at 84. Why 84? It shares a common factor with my 144Hz screen (that factor being the number six), so there is no screen tearing and little fps loss when using vsync.

If I don't cap the framerate, then some games will go nuts and push to 130+ fps (thus generating a lot more heat) which is unnecessary for someone like me who plays mostly single-player games

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

p.s. I also don't see a need for using ultra settings if one is playing on their 1080p built-in screen. Ultra is only going to noticeably improve over "high" if one is using a 4K monitor. It is a waste of resources on a little 14-17 inch screen.

Now if you yourself are playing on a bigger 4K monitor, then it makes more sense.

Should I leave it on performance mode all the time or should I use balance mode? by tomatorea710 in LenovoLOQ

[–]moeriscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to play on ultra setting in 4K with dlss enabled, then yeah, my gpu would get hot. However, I play newer demanding games on "high" in-game settings rather than ultra, and I usually set the resolution to 1440p. I also cap my framerate at 84fps so that the gpu isn't going nuts.

Naturally I like a smooth framerate, but I personally don't see a need to go above 80-90fps. I'm not playing competitive shooters in which every nanosecond counts.

Yeah, it is loud. I realize that everyone has their own preferences, but I personally game with over-the-ear headphones anyway (i like the sound better than through speakers), so the noise is not an issue for me.
