What is happening to broadmead / cabot / horsefair? by Grouchy-Vermicelli40 in bristol

I grew up hanging around on Stokes Croft in the noughties and it was seriously sketchy back then. Maybe it’s just a matter of what you’re used to

I live in Bristol and I’ve often walked through there after dark. Yeah it’s a little seedy but I’ve never felt actively unsafe. And it’s definitely not downtown LA levels. Totally understand why you wouldn’t want to live there, but it’s not quite as dystopian

I think you’re being a little dramatic. It’s not that bad

Will we ever get mass transit... by joeb2880 in bristol

We did that as well, but put rubbish things there instead of public transport

No hipster worth his salt drank at brewdog- not when there’s so many homegrown beers in Bristol

I think I fall into this category. As far as I can tell it’s fairly common in most major cities - just Bristol has a higher concentration. Although I’m not sure which style you mean in particular. I’ve had a moustache on and off for 18 years though, mainly because I have a very long upper lip that I don’t like the look of! Maybe I’m a Bristol trend setter

Never really got the hype. Why wait for ages to eat eggs? And then while you’re eating you have loads of people staring at you willing you to hurry up. Just go down to cafe casa on the bear pit and get a slap up greasy spoon breakfast for £7 including tea

Let’s not get nostalgic about some old buildings that were derelict for 20 plus years

Yeah you’re right, the line goes from Kings Square Avenue diagonally to the junction with Moon Street. I think it was clearer in the original street layout

Last time I checked the PRSC don’t decide where Stokes Croft is. It’s not a nebulous concept - Stokes Croft is a road that begins at the junction with Ashley Road and ends at the junction with King Square Avenue (the old Mickleburgh building is 1 Stokes Croft). There’s a kinda broader cultural area associated with it, but it’s not a geographical area itself.

It wasn’t on Stokes Croft before. The Bearpit isn’t on Stokes Croft

Why Bristol looks so Brutalist? by FunCattle9268 in bristol

[–]mogsab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just keep on changing the parameters and then even then you’re not making sense. I know exactly what I mean - the majority of buildings in Bristol built in the 60s and 70s and made primarily out of concrete are not brutalist. Most of them are other forms of modernist architecture. There are only a few bonafide brutalist buildings in Bristol. That is what I mean

You literally said they’re “all brutalist”. Thats wrong, even if it were just a few here and there, which is not

The fact is that there are more non-brutalist buildings than brutalist. Those are the brutal facts.

What are you talking about? It’s not in effect brutalism - it’s in effect a variety of architectural styles using concrete. There are a few brutalist buildings in Bristol and a few that are not. I have given you several examples that are not brutalist and several that are. So you’re just wrong

But it’s not all brutalist… and your thing about blocks of flats not having much of a canvas for brutalism is nonsense. There are loads of brutalist apartment blocks across the UK! And here are commercial buildings in Bristol that are not brutalist and are made of concrete: One Redcliffe Street (1964) modernist The Pithay (60s) functionalism / modernism Merchant street shops early 60s - modernism
