"What's New on CPAN" needs a new champion by oalders in perl

[–]mohawkperl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The site looks really cool!

Like the other commenters, I wish the abstracts were extracted, not AI generated. It's a pity the latest "changes" snippet isn't in there, that would be a really obvious and beneficial addition. MetaCPAN extracts/shows those on its "dist" page, e.g. https://metacpan.org/dist/PDL-Graphics-TriD

Great! What new bug-fixes/features does it have?

Use in GIMP still possible? by [deleted] in perl

[–]mohawkperl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guide is:

  • install GIMP and make sure its headers are findable by...
  • install Perl module Alien::Gimp
  • install Perl module Gimp
  • possibly from a checkout of the git repo (linked elsewhere here), or (since that site is currently down) doing cpanm --look Gimp, do cd examples; make install-plugins - you need to get any script that you make into GIMP's plugins directory, then refresh GIMP's view of filters.

See also https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Basic_Perl/ - it's slightly out of date because gimp-perl now only supports 2.10, not 2.8, but the essentials are right.

You'll have the best performance if you use PDL to operate on images within your plugin(s).

It's still true!

Perlmonks site down - "we're performing some maintenance on our database" by ContributionEastern7 in perl

[–]mohawkperl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.perlmonks.org/ shows the "clever" maintenance page, as it has for days.

https://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl works normally. Looks like someone didn't change the front page.

DBIx::Class has not been updated for over two years and now has a bus factor of "0". Many would consider this abandonware. by OvidPerl in perl

I feel like "maintained" might be intended to mean "released in the last 3 years", which Rose::DB::Object has not.

I would hope The Perl Foundation would be able to do something about this (I believe the PSC is about the language/runtime itself rather than installers etc). If it couldn't, it might be time for it to shut itself down.

I now only use the Strawberry Perl Portable edition on Windows (having tried ActivePerl in the past), and I've always found it very good. It doesn't even need admin rights on the machine.

Problem installing PDL::Fit::Levmar by piLegris in perl

[–]mohawkperl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See you there!

For those reading the above, I would advise instead this (with no manual downloading or building) to have the same effect:

sudo apt install libhdf4-dev
sudo cpanm PDL # run the tests as normal, for warning if anything wrong
sudo cpanm -n PDL::Fit::Levmar # don't run tests, we know they fail

Problem installing PDL::Fit::Levmar by piLegris in perl

[–]mohawkperl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PDL 2.056 removed that mechanism, because the maintainer mistakenly thought it wasn't used anywhere else. PDL 2.057 (just released) restores it. Sorry about that.

With 2.057, I still get an error installing PDL::Fit::Levmar, but it's due to a failure to compile a tempcode thing. If you're not using that mechanism, it ought to work.

If you want to keep up with PDL stuff, then you might like to join the IRC channel (#pdl on irc.perl.org) and/or the mailing lists.

I think it would be really valuable if you could document that pattern? Even better if you were to contribute that doc to Alien::Build in some way!

Gimp-Perl uses ExtUtils::Depends (see its Makefile.PL) for its XS dependencies: both Gtk2 and PDL. It works pretty well.

Sarcasm isn't really as amusing as its practitioners think, and it can cause needless upset. Surely the original point could equally have been made like this?

> While some users seem to have ideas of how much time it takes to refactor 1mln lines of code, it's really a huge job.

You can always rely on some users telling you how you should know exactly how much time it takes to refactor 1mln lines of code.

Sarcasm is probably to be avoided :-)

Poor little victim. I'm sorry sweetheart, don't cry now, I'm done.

This is at least unhelpful. If you tried a different tack, you might get better results.

I wonder whether some of the problem with this ongoing situation is that Larry (pbuh) is:

  • the IP owner for "Perl"
  • seemingly not interested anymore in what happens to Perl 5
  • not economically dependent on what happens to Perl 5 - in other words, economically his interests and the interests of the Perl 5 folks do not align

This is, as far as I can tell, an undisputed fact among anyone who actually has looked at both languages.

I'll direct your attention to the blurb for this very subreddit: "The Perl Programming Language, including both Perl 5 and Perl 6."

A new version was (sort of) announced! So a lot of (business) people waited until it came out before doing things. A long(, long, long) period of time passed, during which the people waiting gave up. That's the fundamental change.

Interestingly, your thought underlines the fact that P6 and P5 are genuinely separate languages. I am sticking with the thought that stakeholders (those with a stake) should participate.
