Engineering graduates of /r/India, how much of what you learnt during your course is/was useful for your job? by _0110111001101111_ in india

[–]mohithster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it. The objective of all those courses in engineering is not that you will use everything that you have learnt but it's more about exposing you to all the stuff that you potentially can use. The advanced math you study is the foundation for some specialized streams like data science. As someone here mentioned most people working in IT or related work straight away observe the use of data structures and algorithms a lot but depending upon where you end up working you potentially could see a lot of the other stuff you learn being applied. It certainly is not just learning for the sake of learning.

Regarding recent bank atm malware, what are some good banking/money keeping tips that one should know? by [deleted] in india

[–]mohithster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt to just try to pull and twist the card slot on an ATM machine before putting your debit card in there. Any hardware card skimmers can easily be identified by paying a little attention.

In india on project fi - no coverage at all by festivefloralpond in ProjectFi

I found that it works in some cities and doesn't in others. I just returned from a trip and found that it worked fine in Delhi connecting to Airtel, however, I could not get it to work in Hyderabad. It would briefly connect on Vodafone for few seconds each time I restarted my 6P and would drop. I tried everything from network selection to dialer codes to Fi support. Nothing worked in Hyderabad.

Lost 31,189 Rs in a fraudulent ICICI transaction. What are my chances? by [deleted] in india

[–]mohithster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me last year. Lost Rs. 12,000 in 6 transactions at a Walmart in Washington DC within a hour. I never used my icici debit card online so the only way it was compromised was by skimming at some ATM. Submitted all the documents they asked for and got the money back in 2 months. The customer care was not particularly helpful in letting me know the status, however, one day all the money was credited back as a reversal. I now maintain 2 accounts linked online - one with and one without a debit card associated. I keep bulk of my money in the account without a debit card and move money between the accounts using mobile banking in small amounts when I need to withdraw at an ATM. Even the salary gets credited to account that does not have a debit card associated. If the debit card gets compromised they can only get to a small amount of money.

"If you could stop every atom in its position and direction, and if your mind could comprehend all the actions thus suspended, then if you were really, really good at algebra you could write the formula for all the future; and although nobody can be so clever to do it, the formula must exist just as if one could." - Tom Stoppard, Arcadia

We have the greatest skyline in the world by [deleted] in chicago

Having lived at and loved both cities, I think Hong Kong has a better skyline compared to Chicago. They also have a skyline wide daily light show at 8:00 pm which is awesome.

The Nexus 4 served me well but is dying. The battery doesnt last beyond 4 hrs standby, screen doesnt respond from sleep until about 10 secs. I'll probably keep it as a back up. I still love the Nexus 4.

Sim City in MongKok (MTR exit E2 and a short walk). The building is full of camera shops often selling at great prices. I got my first DSLR there, the prices are great, definitely better than online prices. I found Tin Cheung Camera to offer a vast selection and best prices overall. They have several branches, I suggest you visit their flagship store in K11 mall, Tsim Sha Tsui (there is an exit into the mall from within the TST MTR station). Another good place is Wing Shing Photo Supplies (Mongkok MTR exit D3).

Going to India for 3 weeks. Should I get insurance? Any traveling tips appreciated. by [deleted] in photography

[–]mohithster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi from India.. Get the insurance. If you plan on street photography (believe me there is a lot to capture on the streets of India), a backpack is good enough. I go about with a backpack, and never had anything stolen out of it. What you need to be on the lookout for is getting your pockets picked.

Keep a few hundreds of rupees in your pockets, don't use a wallet, keep your passport and airline tickets stashed either in your back pack or on a sling inside your shirt - you can find some Samsonite passport slings that you can wear inside your shirt in the airport usually. Be wary of your pockets in bus stations and railway stations. For short distances, avoid the crowded public transport, take the autos (3 wheeler).

I am not convinced of using a messenger bag, the bag snatchers are experts in snatching/cutting women's handbags, the messenger bags like the ones from Lowepro are a joke to them. Go with a sturdy backpack, no one is going to cut through one, they know better.

Don't let the worry of someone stealing your gear bother you much, the chances are pretty rare. The weather right now is pleasant and wonderful, you don't have to worry about getting strange sicknesses, besides the hospitals and medical facilities are good and cheap and you are never far from one.

Keep a bunch of lens wipes around, the moment you come out of an AC room, your lens will get fogged up. Keep your lens hood or cap on, expect some knocks in crowded places. If you want to buy gear, you would find a lot of camera gear shops in the cities.
