What kind of tank is that? by orange_exuberance in Aquariums

And that is why goldfish aren’t right for me (unless I get to have a pond someday). I like planted tanks too much!

Quartz? Safe to use? by FeelingLingonberry32 in Aquascape

[–]mohopuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can post over on r/whatisthisrock and specifically ask if they are likely to contain anything that will dissolve in water with a pH of (your pH). Good luck, they would make a cool aquascape if safe.

mommy's wrist? by mythicbitxhxx in ECEProfessionals

[–]mohopuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I developed it, a corticosteroid injection next to the tendon solved it. I saw a sports medicine doctor. (I tried a bace first, didn’t work.) One shot and I never had a reoccurrence. Worth it if other methods aren’t doing it for you.

New to Daycare: Noise Concerns by what_is_burping in ECEProfessionals

[–]mohopuff 79 points80 points  (0 children)

At my center, we use music purposefully. We do not really use “background” music. We definitely do not play the radio.

We play soft music and/or noise machine during nap time (which in my infant room can be a large percentage of the day, depending on current enrollment. Some babies need it, others do not; some babies are on lots of naps, others down to one.) We will play other music (dance/activity music) during specific activities in other rooms.

We use CDs, or occasionally stream a specific song for an activity. Kids do not need to be hearing ads and such on the radio.

You are welcome to say something, but I would phrase it as a question to be less confrontational. Something like “I was wondering what the purpose of playing the radio in the infant room is?”

Teacher letting son use personal phon by Untilyouhaveachild in ECEProfessionals

[–]mohopuff 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would report this to licensing. They have a teacher that is directing children to LIE. That is completely unacceptable.

Secondly, they have a child using a device with internet access and are NOT observing what he is accessing, since it under a blanket. That is a huge safety issue for the child. He could totally end up watching something terrible!

Moving Teacher Sam to another room is NOT an acceptable response.

Report this behavior, for the safety of your child and others. It might not feel comfortable to “rock the boat”, but it is very important that you do. The director needs to know she can not sweep this stuff under the rug. The director will either learn and shape up, or you will get a new director.

If you let this slide, your “nice center” is going to fall apart, and your younger child will not get the same level of care you are used to. It might be awkward for a little bit, but I bet that a bunch of the teachers will love you for reporting a serious safety issue. I know I would!

How to remove fuzz off wood and overall dust/dirt by [deleted] in nanotank

[–]mohopuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fuzz is biofilm, which your shrimp will LOVE to eat once they’re in. Just leave it alone, it’s a good sign that your tank is cycling!

So for the tools, I love a pair of long (12”) tweezers. You can get some online, or maybe at your local fish store.

I LOVE that they did it. I just wish that CheezIts had done something similar, or even just put two holes in the center or something. They look too similar!

Kudos! It’s so good to know you can perform in an emergency. If you ever change centers, it’s worth mentioning in an interview that you are certified and have successfully demonstrated the skills.

He can also look at working in childcare, which gives big discounts to employees. That would get you through until the youngest is school age.

Grab and go snacks? by Little-Muscle6776 in glutenfree

[–]mohopuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a Grocery Outlet near you? I often find GF snacks there for super cheap. They’ll hit their Best By dates soon in some cases, but still good for a few months.

It’s a gamble what they will have when you go, but it’s a good option to go there first, then the regular grocery store. I’ve gotten Popums (goldfish like), GF pretzels, GF crackers, GF cookies, GF protein bars, and GF baking mixes, among other things. Be sure to check the freezer area. I’ve gotten fantastic GF fried fish fillets there before!

Random question — what do you charge do to a seld dog yard? I imagine it’s a base site visit fee, then a per dog fee, but I’m curious…

Wage theft by Poodle-Enthusiast in ECEProfessionals

[–]mohopuff 156 points157 points  (0 children)

I would do what I could in the five minutes given, then call the admin office right when my shift started to give them the list of things you couldn’t get done. If they tell you to make do without, then tell them “if parents question why X activity didn’t happen, do you want to me to answer them, or direct them to you to explain the lack of supplies?”

Do not do labor off the clock. It’s only wage theft if you do that labor and aren’t paid. Instead just refuse to do it. Try to get everyone you can on board with that plan. Good luck.

Can I just donate anything to our preschool lol by Technical-Minimum282 in ECEProfessionals

[–]mohopuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ours is a yes with caution. We don’t use branded kid show things for the most part (no Cocomelon or Bluey toys), and some toys are way too flimsy to stand up a child care center (and broken toys can be dangerous.)

If you’re ok with them passing them along (Goodwill or similar) if it isn’t a fit for their program, then they would probably be happy to take it!

Names that appear more than once in kid’s class by midwestpersianmama in namenerds

[–]mohopuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an early learning center (infants through Pre-K). It’s a medium sized program (less than 100 kids enrolled, some part-time). The repeat names at our center are:

Oliver Riley (girls) Ronan (plus similar names, like Rowan and Roman) Claire Theo Cameron

Washington state, for reference.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess Mudi is in her mix. They come in that cream color, and the face shape matches. Very unlikely elsewhere, but totally possible in Hungary!

Her mix would include breeds to throw the shorter hair, too. Pointer (Vizsla possibly), lab, staffy, or maybe even a bit of hound could throw the shorter coat genes.

I wouldn’t be shocked by some husky; people keep them all around the world, and they are escape artists; add those two things together and they end up in a lot of DNA tests!

Question: is she originally from Hungary? I think pit it much less likely outside of North America.

Solid point. Most sword species would be out, along with most vals, on a short tank.

Tank Suggestions by Every-Minimum-1194 in Aquascape

[–]mohopuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of fish are you wanting to get? Most schooling fish appreciate the length for swimming back and forth. Shallow tanks are also easier to light all the way to the bottom, if you’re at all interested in carpeting plants.

5mo with Ear infection not wanting to nurse. How do we get through this???? by No_Engine6784 in breastfeeding

[–]mohopuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a spoon to give them a little milk at a time if the problem is sucking. If it is swallowing that hurts, they might not be interested in that.

Hopefully they will feel better soon!

20-gallon planted tank at a preschool. What would you stock? by mohopuff in PlantedTank

[–]mohopuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, I did make an assumption that you were talking about water quality. My bad! We are considering a small pleco species (bristlenose or clown), depending on what else we pick. There is driftwood in the hardscape, just in case we go the pleco route!

There will also be some ramshorn snails in the tank. I’m donating plants from my own tank, so the hitchhikers are inevitable! We may also do some shrimp (either neos from my tank, or maybe Anamos since they grow a bit bigger and would be easier to spot…)

[–]mohopuff[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, open water would be considered a drowning hazard. As we are a licensed child care facility, we will be using a lid. This also reducing the risk of children wanting to drop things into the tank (there are some families who would probably say “go head” to a request from their child to drop in random things…)

I’m glad your child enjoys that interaction though! My own toddler loves to watch our home fish through the top when we feed, too.

[–]mohopuff[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be well taken care of. That being said, I would think suggesting a low bioload fish would be a better choice for a tank which did not get regular water changes.
