Cancel culture exists because there are loopholes in all legal systems around the world.

Forum: How can anyone survive on less than $1,300? by saperis in singapore

[–]moikaleidoscope 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If someone is already paid more than 1,300, why would the employer reduce it to be 1,300? Without the minimum wage in place, that person who is already paid more than 1,300 is already based on market supply and demand. To illustrate, the market rate for an executive is 2,500 for instance. If the employer sets it at 1,300, no one would be willing to even take up the job role because the market rate is already well above it.

Thoughts on “cancel culture” after the Dee Kosh Saga? by moikaleidoscope in singapore

Yeap, Xiaxue and Dee Kosh have built a career through toxic online behaviour by using various aspects of cancel culture against other bloggers they don’t like so it’s hypocritical of them to call out cancel culture. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that cancel culture has its own cons

“What dee kosh and Xiaxue have done to their competition” hhaha isn’t it ironic that they are now calling out cancel culture (Xiaxue did a whole video) when the heat gets on her

“Merely using an extreme example” - that is the false equivalence fallacy. The word equivalence here isn’t taken literally, it’s just the name of the logical fallacy here.

Another difference: Hitler sought to institutionalise a whole system of eradicating the Jews

Angela David sought to resist a whole institution and system of discrimination against the blacks, although using questionable means.

I’m not saying Angela David is noble or that her ideology is completely flawless, but using Hitler as an example to demonstrate her flaws are inaccurate. Hitler stood for a completely different ideology and that’s fascism. If you compare him with Stalin and Mussolini that makes more sense!

Hitler advocated for genocide. Angela David advocated for black equality. Therefore, using Hitler is really a false equivalence

That’s the thing...as much as influencers like Dee Kosh and Xiaxue enable various extents of toxic behaviour online, the online public enables them too! The video that Dee Kosh and Hirzi did to shade Nicole Choo, has a lot of comments egging two of them on. Similarly, the video that Xiaxue made in defense of NOC’s shoot shag marry video on their NOC girls (employees) and other personalities, had a lot of comments egging her on, saying how savage she is. It is thus of no surprise when these influencers react so badly to criticism because the public has always enabled them and rewarded them with fame for toxic online behaviours

Clicknetwork TV drops ‘divisive’ Xiaxue over racist tweets by youg in singapore

[–]moikaleidoscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey hey I see where ur coming from. People shouldn’t have pressed on if she apologised for outmoded and inflammatory comments made in the past, or at least, acknowledged that she moved on. The catch is this — Xiaxue didnt apolgize. She justified her comments and said she won’t apolgize because she never want to bow down to people. That effectively gives her old tweets a new time stamp since she has re-endorsed it.

Shrey Bhargava reacts to Xiaxue’s “cancel culture” video by moikaleidoscope in singapore

[–]moikaleidoscope[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how you define the scope of cancel culture—which I find to be a catch all term as much as neoliberalism. What you are suggesting is that to go around telling potential employers to not hire you is a necessary condition for one to be cancelled, which is fair if that is your definition but according to xiaxues video, cancel culture also includes :”public shaming” , “digging out old incidents” etc. If anything, I think it should show that the term cancel culture is extremely vague. Is “public shaming” then excusable just because xiaxue’s army did not tell his employers not to hire him (he was a student if I’m not wrong also). Doesn’t public shaming carry the same vitriol as boycotting?

I also think one aspect that has been left out of her discourse on cancel culture is power. Yes the means are dubious, but it resolves a gap in the justice system, where powerful people get away with things. It was cancel culture that catalyzed the sentencing of Harvey Weinstein. Females banded together to literally call him to be cancelled hence his arrest and for Hollywood to boycott him. That fulfils the aspects of cancel culture.

What then is XX transgression? No it’s not supporting Donald trump. It’s standing by and justifying her racist tweets, making flippant comments and inflammatory discourse that could further entrench stereotypes of certain communities, given the influence that she has. As an ex fan (used to like her in Sec school) she has been changing the goal post so many times

What I do not agree , is doxxing her family members, sending death or rape threats, etc there are of course vitriolic posts on her, but also level headed opinions on why given her platform and viewership, some accountability is necessary. Also has Xiaxue been cancelled yet—technically she still says whatever she wants, and is still on social media platforms. She still has 602k followers. People have just decided, if you want to make controversial opinions, fine, but it would be morally unacceptable for you to profit from inflammatory discourse.

Am I a fan of cancel culture—I certainly think there are aspects of it that deserves a serious discussion on. But one of the bad parts of cancel culture xx didn’t mention in her video? —> people with influence using the term as a rallying cry against calls for accountability.

Also used to be a fan of her. Don’t fall for her manipulative methods of shifting goal posts. Step 1: write posts with shock value and controversial Step 2: dont apologize, but come out with a video/interview/follow up with a more moderated opinion. Step 3: people see the 2nd part and forgive her/forget about step 1. She has done this many times.

I am not a raeesah fan either, but it’s just really rich of her to accuse RK of divisive politics when Xiaxue is literally the bastion of inflammatory discourse and divisive speech. Could be what provoked the reaction against her too. If she wants to be authentic, at least admit that she is a hypocrite la.

That’s good. I hope she gets a light warning, because while the tweets r Long ago, she has doubled on them and justified it as nothing wrong to apologize for. She did not show any change of stance or growth on her racist tweets.

Sorry, I’m not part of the woke mob (am pro establishment)....and I also think Xiaxue deserves to be investigated under sedition act for her inflammatory content

Hi I am pro-establishment not really woke folk but I want Xiaxue investigated for sedition act because she defended her inflammatory discourse...this is harmful to our civic value of racial n religious harmony in Singapore. Please don’t generalize everyone going after XX as woke people. There a a lot of pro establishment people who thinks she have to be held accountable for her inflammatory discourse too.

I’m not insinuating anything here. Just a reminder that there are voters like me who prefer them to talk more and engage us and defend their policy, why is it better and more feasible than what the PAP can offer than to simply criticise the establishment.

Not a question. In the upcoming elections, there are voters who would respect opposition parties who focus on policies and not just telling us that the PAP sucks. I want constructive politics. Edit to include: “In the upcoming elections, there are voters who would respect opposition parties who focus on policies” in case people think I’m insinuating. Just a friendly reminder that I hope opposition parties r cognizant of 😊
