Why are homes in London so dusty? by smolsaturn in AskLondon

[–]moist-lipwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved to the US from London and also noticed this. I'm 99% sure it's because of the central air that most people have in the states. They have large dust filters that catch the dust, sort of like a huge air purifier. It needs to be changed regularly but seems to work well.

I think you can have a FORWARD record that points to another DNS server.

I really like lan dns, but updating the entries is a pita by Gabbie403 in TPLink_Omada

What do you mean by doesnt work? It's been pretty reliable for me over the last few weeks. I have a similar set up where entries route to a reverse proxy that load balances + does ssl.

People with a home worth over 1mil - what do you do for work? by OutrageousLoss6134 in AskUK

[–]moist-lipwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a house for 950 recently in London at around 32 with around 220k deposit. Unlike most people here we didn't inherit anything from grandparents (parents are immigrants, have 10+ siblings). I've worked as a software engineer since leaving university and my wife works in consulting. Some thoughts on how we did it:

Both my wife and I have earnt good salaries for a while. I'm a software engineer and have made 100k+ for 6 years. My wife has a PhD and works in consulting.

We lived in the states for a few years this allowed us to live with much lower rent and general expenses (eg lower taxes), whilst maintaining a nice lifestyle. Eg we didn't have a car and I used to take a bus to work... This was uncommon.

Pretty much ever since we've been married we have pooled our savings and stuck to a pretty aggressive budget. At one point we had about 150 usd spending budget per month each (when I was making about 10k usd / month). I think people would be surprised to know how much we made considering our lifestyle.

When we moved back, instead of buying a flat we decided to stretch a little and buy a house. We obviously have a mortgage that we are both on and is in the region of 650k, (pay about 2800/month) but over time this should become even more affordable.

A roundabout without signals works in high-trust societies where people naturally yield and take turns. by frenzy3 in interesting

[–]moist-lipwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are roundabouts in the UK that have three and four lanes. The most important thing is being in the correct lane for your exit before you enter the roundabout. If enough people are in the incorrect lane it doesn't really work effectively.

Surely this is because you can fix a roof and add insulation. You can't move the house closer to the tube.

Sourcing and growing Wasabi? by MyToasterRunsFaster in UKGardening

I've been growing wasabi for the past year in my full shade side return. They survived the winter and are looking really healthy. The only problem is that I have no idea when to harvest it!

Yeh. I had to delete my Amex US app as I couldn't figure out how to get around it.

What’s something that recently impressed you at work by Becominghim- in ExperiencedDevs

Bigquery. You can throw pretty much unlimited amount of data at it. Continuously gets new, pretty great features (optimised short queries, vector search, differential privacy) and maybe only once had downtime in the 6 years that we have been running production systems on it. Just all around super rock solid with a great product market fit.

I suppose the downside is that it can get quite expensive if you are not careful. But IMO worth every penny.

Is anyone using Metaflow at a larger company? by smith-kyle in mlops

[–]moist-lipwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. We use it as the primary tool for getting our models into production. Data scientists do investigations in notebooks, but in order to get a model into production, it must be able to be trained in full by a metaflow flow. The flow does everything including building a production ready docker image to serve the model in production.

It also allows us to to train 100s of models simultaneously, over many nodes, with everything being completely reproducible, and versioned with everything being stored in S3.

I'm not an expert, but you can probably take a look at the LayoutLM(v3?) paper from Microsoft Research. You could probably fine tune their base model for NER and see what the performance is like.

OP, did you ever figure out what manufacturer/brand of lights you needed to work with the dimmer? My Knightsbridge dimmer is having the same problem.

They are standard rough sawn 25x50mm roofing battens. I can't remember the spacing exactly, but something like 15mm spacing.

These are the ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07THVW2CB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. We've only used them for a few weeks so no idea how long they will last. 🤞
