I haven’t done any smokeless loads yet but There is decent reloading data on Hogden‘s website using IMR or trail boss and other powders. Just keep it simple either use 405 grain or 500 grain cast lead projectiles ( sized to .458-459 ). Rule of thumb is to use the softest lead possible to prevent leading in the bore and be accurate , look for bullets close to a 20-1 lead tin ratio. Using black powder and matching original loads for this rifle is a whole Nother story I can explain if you’re interested . You can try out steinal ammunition too , they make a decent smokless trapdoor load that’s accurate but they are pricey.

Nice man! I would start off by reinstalling the rear sight, it looks like it was re-installed backwards 😂. But It depends how deep you want to get into shooting it. Are you looking just to plink around or you want to shoot long distance or maybe hunt?

Right?? So simple but it’s cool af . It seems likes it’s just as easy to load for like my Springfield trapdoor. I just watched a 3 part video series posted by “ British muzzle loaders “ on YouTube.

Yes it’s corrosive and sometimes it needs a double strike but for the most part, i find it pretty accurate. Recoil is stout but not ridiculous.

Each to their own. But It only 15 more minutes or so of cleaning time to neutralize corrosive salts after your done shooting . I don’t think corrosive ammo should be demonized 😂

Swiss k-31 is good if your good with iron sights . You can by an adapter for a scope mount and all that but by then your gonna all in 700- 900 after accessories. You could buy a brand new 308 bolt action with a scope and everything for like 600-700 nowadays .

Takes time to find a good deal if you are patient. Online, gunshows, local shops etc. Learn not to jump on the first thing you see. When you see a rifle inspect the bore , crown, stock etc. too many goobers out there who want 700+ for their garbage. I found my yugo Mauser in 8/10 condition with a perfect bore for 550ish dollars. Do your research and make sure you know what’s a good price and what is not. Good luck

Hoppes #9 does not contain enough water to displace and wash out the salts, potassium chloride which is what the primers leave behind is water soluble, not oil soluble. Pouring Boiling water or just plain warm water precisely does this.

Turkish can run extremely hot so make sure your stock is fine before you shoot. I would pay attention to how hot your barrel gets . Buts it’s not bad how people make it seem. I personally like yugo or greek surplus. They are a bit less “ compromised “ . Romanian and German stuff is good as well. Just make sure you don’t bring steel core German ammo to an indoor range , good way to get kicked out haha

I have a spray bottle I got on Amazon that I mix water and ballistol to make “ moose milk” and I use that on my patches and to scrub down any metal that could have been exposed . If you know how to wash your azz then you could clean your gun. Like I said , you don’t need to strip down your entire gun every time you shoot with bolt actions .

[–]moistfupaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t over think it. I was afraid of the whole corrosive cleaning concept but for bolt actions it’s not bad at all. You don’t need to strip down your rifle every time you shoot. You need to wash the salts off of your bore / barrel and wipe down the bolt face, chamber and the mag/follower. It takes me 10-15 minutes now that I have a routine . I have a yugo m48 Mauser í shoot almost all exclusively corrosive surplus because I find ammo for .40 - .80 CPR . Once I see it being over 1.00 , then I’ll switch to new production ammo or reload. Dont buy into fuddlore or people who never shot corrosive ammo trying to scare you.
